The Eli Terry Jr. Water Wheel is believed to be one of only two water wheels of its type in the United States. Originally it supplied power to the Terry Clock Shop located on this property. In the early 1830's the manufacture of locks began. By 1845 over one half million locks were made in Terryville. The business employed 38 people. By 1854 the Eagle Lock Company had been formed. Thomaston’s Three Tower Clocks In 1872 Seth Thomas Clock Company began manufacturing Tower Clocks. Considered to be a sample of high quality workmanship and an ingenious mechanical feat, Tower Clocks are an architecturally important finger-print of our past.

Thomaston Town Hall Tower Clock In 1883, the planning and construction of Thomaston's Town Hall was supervised by R. W Hill of Waterbury, CT. The structure embodies an impressive Seth Thomas Tower Clock helping to portray a sense of artistic creativity and engineering ingenuity. The Town Hall building created a symbolic identity that permanently altered Thomaston's appearance.

Congregational Church Tower Clock In 1836, Seth Thomas generously donated the land for the first Congregational Church. As an active parishioner, he also contributed considerably to the planning and building of the church. The Tower Clock originally had a wood movement mechanism installed by Eli Terry. The present brass movement mechanism was installed in 1890. This movement apparatus subsequently was moved to the Church's lobby in 1980, enabling easier access for maintenance and viewing.

Seth Thomas Clock Company's Tower Clock In 1915, the last Seth Thomas Building was constructed. Its imposing Tower Clock capped the building designating it as the headquarters of the Seth Thomas Clock Company. The symbol of the clock was most important to reinforce the building's identity and highlight the corporate Clock manufacturing purpose.

Notice that this tree is hollow and 3/4 of the wood is dead. However, 1/4 of the tree refuses to die. The limbs on the tree are evidence of the living material still within. Higher up a double top reaches toward the sky. The tree itself continues to grow and produces cones. It is a prime example of the hardy redwood species.

“Tired of living here and there in rented houses,” wrote Eleanor Roosevelt, in 1937 she and her husband Ted Jr. purchased four acres of Sagamore Hill from his mother. The Georgian-style home, built in 1938, sat at the south end of the old apple orchard. It was smaller than Sagamore Hill, but suited their needs. It had twelve rooms, servants’ quarters on the east wing, a semi-formal garden in the rear of the home, and a cold cellar to store vegetables and other perishable goods. The north end of the farm included a multi-bay garage for the family’s automobiles and a small cottage for the site foreman. In honor of their surroundings, they called their new home “Old Orchard.”

Helping Feed the Family

Mealtimes were family times for the Roosevelt family. Breakfast might include peaches and cream, fried liver and bacon, grits, waffles, cereal, milk, and for Theodore Roosevelt, lots of coffee. Dinners often featured fried chicken covered with white gravy, pork, and vegetables. Roosevelt and his wife Edith didn’t expect the farm to be self-sufficient, but they did their best to raise much of the meat and vegetables the family ate.

The Farm Shed stored ox harnesses and farm tools, along with the occasional livestock carcass. The Chicken House was where the family raised chickens for their eggs and meat. The hogs and rabbits had their own pens nearby and dairy cows grazed in the field behind these buildings. The farm workers took care of the animals, and the Roosevelt children spent many hours playing in the barnyard.

One of the greatest institutions of the civilized world is the family dining table.”- Theodore Roosevelt Jr., All In The Family

A Garden for Food and Color

New York, Nassau County, Oyster Bay

In Theodore Roosevelt’s time this field was a three-acre garden of vegetables, fruit trees, and berries. It produced potatoes, lima beans, lettuce, and carrots, peach, plum, and pear trees, and multiple grape arbors. Despite its size the garden was not big enough to take care of all their mealtime needs. The garden also provided many scents and colors. Edith Roosevelt loved flowers throughout the house, so the garden included carnations, snapdragons, salvia, columbine, and larkspur for cuttings and table settings.

Alfred Davis, who had worked for the Roosevelt family all his life, developed the garden soon after Roosevelt purchased Sagamore Hill. He tilled the soil, made sure the plants got water, and tried to keep the Roosevelt children from “tramping on his flower beds, eating his grapes and currants.”

The First Building

Sagamore Hill had been farmland before Theodore Roosevelt bought the property. He intended to live here and keep it a working farm. The farm would need animals and farm workers; both would need shelter. The first building Roosevelt had built provided a stable for the horses and a lodge for his farm manager. It was built on this field in 1883. Architects Lamb & Rich designed it in the same Queen Anne style they would later use for the main house.

Noah Seaman was the first farm manager. He and his wife lived here. Usually one or two farm workers would live in the Stable above the horses, carriages, hay, and grain. A 1944 fire burned this building down.

Albert I. Lodwick (pictured at the top of the mural) was born in Mystic, Iowa on March 4, 1904. On July 10, 1938, due in large part to Albert Lodwick's organizational skills as his flight operations manager, Howard Hughes set a record by completing a flight around the world in just 91 hours (3 days, 19 hours), beating the previous record by more than 4 hours. Hughes returned home ahead of photographs of his flight.

Taking off from New York City, Hughes continued to Paris, Moscow, Omsk, Yakutsk, Fairbanks, Minneapolis, then returning to New York City. For this flight he flew a Lockheed Super Electra 14 (a twin-engine transport with a four-man crew) fitted with the latest radio and navigational equipment. Hughes and Lodwick wanted the flight to be a triumph of American aviation technology, illustrating that safe, long-distance air travel was possible.

Moonlight's Union cavalry brigade, with five guns and 1000 men, was driven from the Little Blue River by Marmaduke's and Shelby's 5000 Confederates of Price's army. Moonlight stopped here and was joined by Jennison's and Ford's brigades of Blunt's division with 10 guns and 2000 men. A defensive line was formed running north and south for a mile.
