Cattle Barns

Missouri, Pettis County, Sedalia

The westernmost cattle barn, with the typical round arches and terra cotta trim, houses Aberdeen Angus Cattle.

The easternmost 1907 barn houses Jersey Cattle. It is considered to be the most decorated cattle barn, perhaps because it was the first cattle barn encountered by visitors.

The Holstein Barn, built in 1926, was designed to fit between the Guernsey and Jersey barns and was a response to the growing dairy industry. The building is simpler than the older barns, but it blends well.

Temple E

Greece, Peloponnese Region, Corinthia Regional Unit, Archea Korinthos (Old Corinth)
English Text:

Standing 9.00 meters above the Forum, Temple E occupied as prominent a place in the Roman city as the Temple of Apollo.

In its first phase, the temple had stone foundations, probably with a triple crepis measuring 44.00 x 23.50 meters, on which was constructed a limestone Doric temple with six columns across its facade. The temple enclosure was bounded by a wall to the west and by stoas on the north and south. It is dated to the early 1st century A.D., soon after the death of Augustus.

In the late 1st century A.D. the temple was radically altered. The new building was built in the Corinthian order on a podium 3.4 meters high and was surrounded by a colonnade of 6 columns across the short sides and 12 along the long sides. The temple had a pronaos with two columns in antis and a long, narrow cella. The temple was completely enclosed by stoas during this phase.

From Pausanias's description, his temple appears to have been dedicated to Octavia, the sister of Augustus.

English:
The Theater of Caunus, with a seating capacity for 5000 spectators, faces southwest, complying with the Anatolian tradition and follows Hellenistic tradition with respect to its plan. The Theatron (sic) having a diameter of 75 m and with an inclination of 27 degrees is supported by the Analemma, which rises up to 15 m in places free of the slope. Analemma is separated from the stage building (Skene) by open entrances at two sides (Parados). Theatron is divided into 9 wedge-shaped kermis by 8 stairways, the steps of which are 19 cm high. Each kermis is made up of 33 seats. These seats are divided horizontally into two by a corridor (Diazoma) that extends the entire length of the Theatron. Diazoma is connected to two passages covered by barrel vaults at the north and north-east. The Orchestra, which is 22.80 m in diameter, has a horseshoe form and is at the same level with the lowest level of seats.
Theatron faces the Skene, which is located at the southeast and is reconstructed as having two stories as suggested by its remains. Complying with the Hellenistic tradition, the height of the Skene does not reach the topmost level of the Cavea. The proskenion, with the height of 2.40 m, was rebuilt five times between 4th century B.C. and 3rd century A.D. The Perioktos, which is a turning stage system, was added in front of the proskenion in the 3rd century B.C. We have here in Caunus the archaeological remains of this system, the description of which, we can read in the ancient literary sources.

This bath house is one of the best preserved examples which survive from the Roman Imperial Period. The building was originally planned as two complexes: the courtyard (palaestra) and the Bath House, both on the same axis with a southwest-northeast orientation. The courtyard preserves only the foundation which measures 56.80x31.40 m and was flanked by colonnades on three sides. Only the corresponding side galleries were divided into rooms. The bath building, which measures 58.20x28.29 m consisted of large halls. The two warm hall (tepidarium) and two exercise halls (ambulacrum) were on either side of the cold room (frigidarium) and the sweating room (laconicum) which formed the middle axis. All these rooms are crowned by the hot room (caldarium) to the southwest. Each of these halls was originally paved with marble slabs.

The Nek Cemetery

English:
This was a fiercely contested part of the front-line at Anzac. A narrow passage across the ridge known as ‘the Nek' lay just below a hill designated Baby 700 by Commonwealth forces. After the Armistice. the remains of several hundred men were discovered on this ground and in the surrounding gullies. This is the final resting place of some 320 Commonwealth servicemen. Among them are casualties of an attack by New Zealand forces on 2 May l9l5. but most fell during an attack on Ottoman lines by the Australian 3rd Light Horse Brigade on 7 August Over 300 of those buried here remain unidentified: their graves covered by earth and grass. their names inscribed on memorials to the missing.

The Charge of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade
In August 1915, Commonwealth forces across Gallipoli prepared for an offensive intended to break the deadlock and take control of the peninsula. Central to the plan was an assault on the heights of Sari Bair, including the peak of Chunuk Bair, from where a breakout towards the Dardanelles might be launched. Supporting attacks would take place at Lone Pine, in the south at Helles, and to the north at Suvla Bay. With Ottoman troops expected to be in retreat from New Zealand forces descending from Chunuk Bair, the 3rd Australian LightHorse Brigade would attack across the Nek towards Baby 700. They faced several lines of Ottoman trenches stretching back towards the high ground, and well-drilled defenders armed with rifles and machine guns.

As dawn broke on the morning of 7 August. the New Zealanders were still short of their objective, whilst an Australian battalion suffered heavy casualties in an unsuccessful attempt to take the nearby ‘German Officers’ Trench’ and silence Ottoman machine guns which covered the Nek. Throughout the night. a bombardment by Allied artillery and naval guns had targeted Ottoman positions, but the barrage stopped abruptly several minutes earlier than planned, giving the Ottomans time to prepare their defences.

As the guns fell silent, Ottoman soldiers took up their positions, while the men of the 8th Light Horse Regiment stood waiting. with bayonets fixed and grenades made ready. At 4.30 am a hand signal was given and the first wave of attackers clambered up from their trenches and began the charge. Almost immediately they were met by devastating rifle and machine gun fire. Most were cut down in no-man's land, and only a few men were able to reach the enemy trenches on the flanks before being overwhelmed. After witnessing the first attack, the second wave prepared to go over the top, and two minutes later they too emerged from the trenches only to meet the same fate.

Through the haze of dust and smoke, red and yellow marker flags were reportedly seen over the enemy trenches, indicating that as, least some men had made it across. The brigade major authorised the launch of a third wave, from the l0th Light Horse Regiment. At 5. 15 am, as commanding officers prepared to cancel the assault, confusion on the right of the line led to some of the fourth wave making a premature charge into the hail of bullets.

The August Offensive would end in failure, and no major attacks would be launched at the Nek for the rest of the campaign. Of the 600 Australians of the 3rd Light Horse Brigade, over 230 were killed and almost l50 wounded. This cemetery was built on what was once no man's land, where many of the fallen lay until the Allies returned here after the end of the war.

English:
The 57th Infantry Regiment was formed during the Balkan War in 1912. On 1 February 1915, it was reconstituted under the command of the 19th Infantry Division as part of the Turkish Fifth Army.

The regiment showed outstanding valour under the leadership of Colonel Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk) during the Allied landings at Ari Burnu on 25 April 1915, when the regiment played a significant role in preventing the advance of ANZAC forces inland on that day.

The 57th Infantry Regiment also took part in major attacks on 27 April, 1 May and 19 May 1915 and fought with distinction despite suffering very high casualties.

After the new Allied landings in the Anafartalar (Suvla) area on 6/7 August 1915, the regiment was involved in battles at Pine Ridge, Chunuk Bair and Anafartalar (Suvla).

From September to December 1915, the 57th Regiment continued on duty at front line trenches on the Gallipoli Peninsula. The regiment left Gallipoli on 19 January 1916.

In a ceremony on 25 April 1916, the regiment was given an award of distinction by the Sultan for its outstanding service. The ceremony was accompanied by a march-past flying the regimental banner.

In the cemetery of the 57th Infantry Regiment, which was stationed at the Gallipoli front from the day of the landings until the evacuation, the names of 1,817 soldiers who lost their lives there, including 25 officers, have been identified.

The summit’s extreme weather conditions have led to many restoration efforts. In 1974, the state entirely rebuilt the tower.
1840: the first Greylock tower was a weather observatory, put up by Williams College students in 1831; they also built this second version in 1840.
