After the Fire: The Vandermissen Brickworks Site

Wisconsin, Door County, Namur

What Does the Vandermissen Brickworks Site Represent?
On October 8, 1871, the Peshtigo fire destroyed many of the Belgian farms and small towns along the west side of the Door Peninsula.

The Belgians rebuilt after the fire using bricks instead of logs for construction. A household brickmaking industry developed to produce the bricks. Many of these distinctive red brick structures survive today and give the region its architectural character.

The Vandermissen Brickworks was operated as early as 1899 and ceased operation between 1905 and 1917. Other small brickworks in operation during this time include the Macco Brickworks to the south in Kewaunee County and the G. Peters Brickworks located northeast of Vandermissen.

Archaeology
The Vandermissen Brickworks was the first late 19th and early twentieth century brickworks to be excavated in the region. Archaeology at the site recovered evidence of the steps typically associated with the process of hand-making bricks.

Local brickworks would have been very common during the rebuilding period following the Peshtigo Fire. However, very few are documented archaeologically.

Brickmaking
Bricks were made in a five-step process.
Step 1: Clay Extraction
Clay was dug by hand from local deposits in the fall and left out during the winter to weather or "soften".
Step 2: Clay Preparation
Once the clay had been dug and softened, it was ground and screened. Then the raw clay was put into a "ring pit" or "pug mill" and sand and water were added to produce a brick clay mix.
Step 3: Brick Molding
Bricks at the Vandermissen site were hand-pressed into wooden forms lined with sand to prevent sticking.
Step 4: Drying
Bricks were dreid in the sun to remove moisture and then stacked into piles called "hacks".
Step 5: Firing
Bricks were fired in a kiln known as a "brick clamp", made of bricks, constructed with gaps to allow the flow of air. A hot fire was ignited in the clamp and the firing process typically took several days.

This marker is composed of two plaques on either side of the entrance.

In 1930, the Canadian National Railway (CNR) decided to build a hotel in Charlottetown, Railway hotels were the standard of comfort and service, but the new Canadian National was more than a hotel. When it opened in April. 1931 it joined the family of highly-regarded CNR hotels across Canada and was hailed in the media of the day as “the beginning of a new era in the province.” It stood for everything the Island hoped its young tourists industry would become - modern and stylish, yet elegant and comfortable, a place where, as The Charlottetown Guardian wrote: “…people of moderate means may come to enjoy themselves without extravagant outlay.” In 1939 it was renamed “The Charlottetown Hotel.”

“The Charlottetown,” as it became known to Islanders, changed hands several times, but was owned and operated for many years by Carl Burke. In 1985, hotelier David Rodd fulfilled his long-held dream of adding “The Charlottetown” to his family’s growing chai of Maritime hotels and resorts. As a young man, he had a high regard for the hotel and loved the way it stood out architecturally within the city. The challenge of modernizing the property, while respecting its heritage integrity, has been a labour of love for the Rodd family and for the people whose careers and lives are associated with the company. “The Charlottetown” has become the ‘de facto” flagship of Rodd Hotels & Resorts.

English:
This 1888 chapel, designed by William Critchlow Harris, Jr., is a masterful example of High Victorian Gothic Revival architecture in Canada. Its robust design is distinguished by rough textures in rust-red Prince Edward Island sandstone and by deep-set hooded windows. Inside, a profound sense of religious mystery has been created by the complex decorative scheme. It features a dramatic chancel arch, rich carvings, beautifully patterned encaustic tiles, subdued lighting and eighteen exquisite mural paintings by the artist Robert Harris, brother of the architect.

The Common Seal of the City
“That the Common Seal of the City, made of Silver, having engraved on it the device of Ship, a Plough and Sheaf of Grain, and the words ‘City of Charlotte Town, Prince Edward Island, Incorporated A.D. 1855’ shall be the City Seal. - Law to Establish the City Seal Approved December 7, 1855.
The Seal was designed by “fancy sign printer”, George Milliner.

Charlottetown Coat of Arms
The City’s Coat of Arms blends symbols drawn from Charlottetown’ rich past and beautiful setting and are centered around her importance as the Island’s capital. At the heart representation of Queen’s Square and Charlottetown’s four other squares. The coronation of Queen Charlotte Sophia, wife of George III honours the City’s namesake and underlines its importance as the capital, an important community in the Canadian federation, which is a constitutional monarchy, Charlottetown was, and remains, in many senses, a “Royal City”. as the seat of government and place of residence of the Queen’s representative, the Lieutenant Governor. The crest, above the helmet contains a new heraldic emblem, a coronet composed of the provincial flower, the Lady’s Slipper. Rising above it is an element drawn from the City’s first official symbol, the seal of 1855, a sail representing maritime commerce and industry and the City’s importance as a port. The sail is composed of the City’s arms, and old tradition from the high Middle Ages, dramatizing the concept of the “Ship of the City”. The griffin is one off the two supporters found in the arms of Queen Charlotte’s father, Duke of Mecklenberg-Strelitz. In this case it honours Queen Charlotte’s own family heritage and is, as well, a symbol of the City’s strength and determination as a community. The silver fox represents an important and distinctive Island industry. Both animals are shown, in keeping with heraldic tradition, with their fierce spirit, and ready to protect the corporation’s interests. They stand on land showing the province’s red soil separated by the waters of the harbour.

Queen Square
The centre square, was set aside for institutional use like government, court, market and church. Four squares, one in each quarter of the city added much quality to the plan of the town.
Painting of Queen Square circa 1880’s a gift by Spenser Macky.

Charlottetown Badge of Office
The handsome badge of the mayoralty office was presented to the city in April 1919. It is sterling silver and composed of maple leaves neatly enclosed in a wreath of leaves and links enclosing “C’s”. The pendent is a sunburst surrounding the seal of Charlottetown. It was designed by Mayor Dudley Wright.

Painting of Queen Square and Province House by George Hubbard - 1849

Queen Charlotte 1744-1818
The City of Charlottetown was named for Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England and was incorporated in 1855. Its settlement roots date back to the mid 1700’s
Painting of Queen Charlotte Sophia by Kadlec.

Surveyor Charles Morris of Nova Scotia with the input of Lieutenant-Governor Patterson and Island Surveyor General, George Wright surveyed the site and established a town center of 500 lots, a Common of 500 Acres and a Royalty of 6,401 acres divided into 12 acre fields that would be used for farm land for residents of the town.
This little capital was incorporated in 1855 and in 1996 counted over 32,531 citizens covering almost the same area set aside by the visionaries of 1767.

“ The way in which a capital’s spaces are laid out will inspire the pride of its citizens. It will act as an expression of their faith in the future, the diversity of their cultures and the nature of their values. The soul of the capital, after all, is no more than the soul of those who make up the community. Without them, it is impossible to have a capital.” - Serge Viau, February, 1994

English:
Built in 1888, the Charlottetown City Hall is the oldest municipal hall in Prince Edward Island. Designed by Phillips and Chappell in the Romanesque Revival style often favoured for 19th-century civic buildings, it originally housed several services. A police station and a firehall with a stable were located on the ground floor, while council chambers, a court room and offices were found on the upper storeys. In 1931 a firehall addition was built using 1916 plans. The city hall's grand scale and elegant design symbolize the pride and confidence felt by the city during the late 19th century.

Site of Fort Thompson or Camp MaGaw
In 1856 the United States Congress appropriated money to build the central division of the Fort Kearney-South Pass-Honey Lake Wagon Road from Nebraska to California. W.M.F. Magaw was appointed superintendent by the Secretary of the Interior. He was later removed for mismanagement and replaced by W.F. Lander, who staked a new route known as the Lander Cutoff from Gilbert Station, or Burnt Ranch, to City Rocks, Idaho. Winter of 1857-59 overtook the workers at St. Mary’s Station on the Oregon Trail. Frank Lowe, guide, led them to this location for winter quarters, officially named Fort Thompson, in honor of the incumbent U.S. Secretary of the Interior. Old timers called it Camp Magraw. The settlement above here, first known as Push Root, was renamed Lander by Lowe, in honor of his friend.

Lee County
Lee County, the western-most county in Virginia, was formed from Russell County in 1792; a part of Scott County was added later. The county is named for Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee, governor of Virginia from 1791 to 1794 and former American Revolutionary War officer. Cumberland Gap National Historic Park lies partly in Lee County and in the states of Kentucky and Tennessee. The Cumberland Gap was the principle route through the mountains that Native Americans and early European settlers used to travel to the west and the south. The county seat is Jonesville.

(side 2)
Tennessee
Before the first Europeans permanently settled in Tennessee in 1769, it was inhabited by a number of Native American tribes including the Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, and Shawnee. Until 1784 the territory composing Tennessee was a part of North Carolina. Tennessee became the 16th state admitted to the United States in 1796. Notable residents of Tennessee included U.S. Presidents Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, and Andrew Johnson, as well as frontiersman David Crockett. Nashville is the capital city of Tennessee and an important center for country music.

Lighthouse Keeper's Cottage

Florida, Miami-Dade County, Key Biscayne
The original brick dwelling was completed in July 1825: a two story cottage with two rooms on each floor. The lower floor was dirt and the upper floor had only one small window on each end. The kitchen was attched to the back. The first lighthouse keeper, John Dubose, wrote of constantly making improvements with his sons' help.

In the 1830s, the government added four dormer windows. In 1835, a major hurricane damaged the cottage. In 1836, the cottage was burned to the ground in the Seminole attack. Reason Duke supervised the rebuilding of the cottage, completed in 1846. Six families of lighthouse keepers occupied the cottage in turn until 1878, when it was abandoned.

By the 1920s, shoreline erosion had washed the cottage away. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation Area opened January 1, 1967. A replica of the keeper's quarters from the time when the men of the Frow and Pent families served as keepers was built by the State of Florida in 1969. This is the cottage which you see today.
