Georgia, Charlton County, near Folkston
Racepond was named for “Race Pond,” a round cypress pond near here, where, about 1836, United States soldiers ran their horses for sport.

The troops were stationed at the pond to watch for and capture any Indians who might venture out from the Okefenokee Swamp where they had taken refuge from the great trek to the Western Reservation. Only a few men at a time were needed for patrol duty, and the rest amused themselves by racing their mounts over a track they constructed around the pond. A soldier wounded by the Indians died in camp and was buried near the track.

New Mexico, Hidalgo County, near Annimas
On November 28, 1896 the Mormon Battalion of the U. S. Army West crossed these mountains near this summit enroute to California during the Mexican War. Col. Cooke had dispatched scouts ahead to find the best route. An Indian guide, Charonneau, while scouting ahead was attacked by three grizzly bears. He killed one bear which provided meat for the troops.

Lt. Stoneman with 21 men could not find a suitable route down the mountain. They began cutting a road but the task was to laborious and the progress to slow. Col. Cooke then ordered the wagons unloaded and the supplies packed on horses and the mules for transport down the mountain. The wagons were lowered down the 40% grade by ropes. One wagon crashed to the canyon bottom. Henry Bigler wrote, "no other man but Cooke would attempt to cross wagons at such a place. Cooke had the spirit of a Bonaparte".

Built in 1871, just six years after the end of the Civil War, the Stanton Lodge and School enjoyed dual purposes from its beginning. Before the arrival of free public education, concerned Masons constructed the two-story building as a place to educate the community's young people, and they used the second floor for meetings. The building has accommodated a variety of community meetings since the county built a new school in 1920. Restoration of the Greek Revival building began in 1985.

New Jersey, Hudson County, Bayonne

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey has established preserved areas within the Port Jersey Peninsula to protect and maintain fragile wetlands and wildlife, and provide a waterfront which can be enjoyed by all.

From here you can see some of the greatest landmarks this area has to offer. If you stand facing Manhattan, you will be enjoying a view of the World Financial Center, and beyond it, the Empire State Building.

The Statue of Liberty can be seen to your left, as well as the red brick buildings of historic Ellis Island.

To your right, the shores of Staten Island connect with the southwestern edge of Long Island via the Verrazano-Narrows, the world’s longest suspension bridge. And directly across Upper New York Bay is the borough of Brooklyn, connected to Manhattan by the world-famous Brooklyn Bridge.

These wetlands feature a unique tidal habitat shared by both land and open ocean areas. They are home to rich vegetation, as well as several species of birds, including the Black Skimmer, which nests in its sandy shores.

A special 2.2-acre parcel at the east end of the peninsula has been set aside specifically the endangered Least Tern.

Turkey Red Wheat

Kansas, Harvey County, Walton

Children in Russia hand-picked the first seeds of this famous winter wheat for Kansas. They belonged to Mennonite Colonies preparing to emigrate from the steppes to the America prairies. A peace-loving sect, originally from Holland, the Mennonites had gone to the Crimea from Prussia in 1790 when Catherine the Great offered free lands, military exemption and religious freedom. They prospered until these privileges were threatened in 1871. Three years later they emigrated to Kansas, where the Santa Fe R.R. offered thousands of acres on good terms in McPherson, Harvey, Marion & Reno counties, and where the legislature passed a bill which exempted religious objectors from military service. Within a month after landing in New York the Mennonites planted the red~gold grains their children had selected. The harvest was the first of the great crops of hard Turkey Red and its derivatives that have made Kansas the Granary of the Nation.
