Kansas, McPherson County, near Elyria

In 1825 President James Monroe approved a bill providing for the survey of the Santa Fe Trail from Missouri to New Mexico and the making of treaties to insure friendly relations with Indians along the route. A mile west of this sign, on Dry Turkey Creek, a monument marks the site of a council on August 16, 1825, between U.S. Commissioners Reeves, Sibley and Mather, and Son-ja-inga and fifteen other head men of the Kansas or Kaw nation. Negotiations were conducted through "Old Bill" Williams, a noted guide and trapper. For a consideration of $800 in cash and merchandise the chiefs promised that the tribe would not molest travelers. Earlier, at Council Grove, a similar treaty was made with the Osage Indians.

Okefenokee Swamp, 400,000 acres of waterways, swamp prairies and floating islands is a region of many legends. Here DeSoto’s men told of trees that turned to warriors, Indians hunted and fished in its fastnesses and fled to safety on its islands from raids on South Georgia settlers. Now the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for plant and animal life. The Seminole Indians named the swamp Okefenokee or “Land of Trembling Earth” for the islands, built on networks of roots, leaves and soil, that tremble at a footstep.

Wisconsin, Marquette County, Montello
Once home to the Mound Builders, the Winnebago and the Menominee, destination of the voyageurs, a pioneer settlement harnessing diverse natural resources, today a modern community with a rich heritage.

The earliest eastern visitors observed the bluffs and Indian mounds surrounding "Lac de Boeuf" or Buffalo Lake. Sandhill cranes, deer, fish and ducks thrived in the "oak openings" and in the wild rice enhanced waters of the area. The Fox and Montello Rivers carried the canoes of the Native Americans and voyagers and later the pleasure boaters coming through the Montello locks. The railroad carried the famous Montello granite as well as the production of the many mills and farms. Now modern highways speed us on our journeys.

This Bird's Eye View of Montello from 1883 shows the town in the early days of the quarry development and highlights the many businesses then operating. Landforms, buildings and street names may have changed, but Montello remains a thriving community in the midst of nature's beauty.
