Formal nurses training in the United States began in Boston in 1872. In 1888, the Women's Club of Wisconsin organized the Wisconsin Training School for Nurses patterned after the Bellevue School of Nursing in New York.

In 1894, the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent dePaul launched Wisconsin's first private hospital organized training school for nurses at St. Mary's Hospital, Milwaukee. The two year curriculum was expanded to three in 1901 and a diploma awarded upon graduation. The school incorporated separately in 1912, became state accredited in 1913 and nationally accredited in 1940.

Affiliation with other institutions of learning began in 1924. The name was changed in 1932 to denote the transition from training to education.

Rising costs and growth of college degree programs brought voluntary dissolution in 1969 after graduating 1,913 nurses.

Captiva, Florida.
'Tween Waters Inn was established on Captiva Island by F. Bowman and Grace B. Price in 1931. They started the inn with a single building and expanded it over the next 30 years, adding guest cottages, a marina, and other buildings as they built their remote tourist destination into a favorite winter resort for wealthy northerners. Bowman Price provided guided fishing trips for guests, and Grace Price offered entertainment and dining in the inn’s Old Captiva House. The inn’s visitors included Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh, who drew inspiration from Captiva for her best-selling book, Gift from the Sea (1955); and J.N. “Ding” Darling, a conservationist and renowned editorial cartoonist who won Pulitzer Prizes in 1924 and 1943. Darling wrote and drew while staying at ‘Tween Waters Inn for seven winter seasons between 1935-36 and 1941-42. He also helped establish the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge which was named in his honor in 1967. In 1976, ‘Tween Waters Inn was purchased by Rochester Resorts, Inc., which restored its historic cottages for the inn’s continued use as a resort. ‘Tween Waters Inn was listed on the National Register of Historical Places in 2011.

Into the Backcountry

Britain's capture of Charles Towne in May 1780 marked the low point of American hopes for independence. The British would simply move north until they controlled all thirteen colonies. The only thing standing in their way was the frontier region known as the South Carolina Backcountry. Here some of the harshest fighting would take place and, here, British plans would begin to unravel.

Around 1774, Edward Musgrove had built his home and gristmill on the Enoree River. By the summer of 1780, he and his family would be wrapped up in events they could not have foreseen.

A Band of Brothers

near Enoree, South Carolina.
The only fighting force remaining in South Carolina to oppose the advancing British were the militias — a scattered assortment of unorganized volunteer "armies." These troops varied from large groups that resembled regular organized armies to small bands of riflemen that roamed the countryside waiting for an opportunity to strike.

The two hundred Patriots who fought at Musgrove's Mill on August 19, 1780, were all militiamen, and the hit-and-run tactics used in the battle were the trademark of militias in the South Carolina Backcountry.

Many of the men that went into battle for the British at Musgrove's Mill were Provincial soldiers. Provincials were Regular troops, meaning that they were trained and supplied by the British. They differed from Regular British soldiers, however, in that Provincial soldiers were American colonists.

There were at least three different Provincial units that fought at the Battle of Musgrove's Mill. They included the South Carolina Royalists, the 3rd Battalion of the New Jersey Volunteers and the 1st Battalion, Delancey's Brigade of the New York Royalists. All had been involved in action in the Southern Campaign prior to Musgrove's Mill.

Falls Road Bridge

Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
Originally, the Nash-Edgecombe county line was the midline of the Tar River at the Falls to give each county an opportunity to capitalize on the value of the Falls. After the original bridge was burned by the Union during the Civil War, Edgecombe was reluctant to help rebuild because they saw it as being more beneficial to Nash County. Nash County petitioned the State to relocate the county line to the railroad centerline. This was enacted in 1871 at a cost of $800, placing the bridge and the Falls sorely within Nash County. The existing bridge is the fifth bridge at this site.
