Old Spanish Trail
Where you are standing, Antonio Armijo and 60 men once ventured from New Mexico to California hoping to find a new trade route in 1829. Following established Native American trails, the explorers traveled through dry, rugged country for 86 days until they reached Gabriel Mission near Los Angeles, on January 30, 1830.

The trip turned out to be a lucrative endeavor. Armijo and his men traded woolen goods for horses and mules. Upon their return to New Mexico, the men sold their stock at premium prices, encouraging other traders to seek their fortunes the same way.

Subsequent expeditions to California took more northerly routes with better water resources. The various routes, including Armijo's original, together were designated as the Old Spanish National Historic Trail in 2002.

Antonio Maria Armijo
At just 25 years old, Antonio Armijo was recognized as a successful trader after his expedition of 1829-1830. Hoping to capitalize on his success, Antonio talked his parents into returning with him from New Mexico to California in 1831. Shortly thereafter, he married Dolores Engracia Duarte y Peralta, the daughter of an influential California rancher.

Utilizing his new family connections, Antonio and his father obtained a 13,000 acre land grant for a ranch near Napa in 1840. As a wealthy landowner, Antonio was awarded the title of Don, establishing himself as a true Califórnio until his death in 1851.

A Better Beast of Burden
Contrary to romanticized illustrations of early traders and settlers traveling the Old Spanish Trail in wagons, most caravans (1829-1847) used pack mules or horses to traverse the rough and difficult terrain. Of these two choices, pack mules were favored for their ability to haul heavy cargo in adverse conditions.

The mules' agility, strength, and surefootedness allowed them to navigate the highly varied terrain. Carrying loads up to 300 pounds each, a hundred of more of these animals formed long mule-trains, bringing goods and good neighbors to California.

The Academy Bell

Kanab, Utah.
For the people of Kanab, this bell represents schools and the importance of learning. From its founding in 1870, Kanab citizens have been encouraged to obtain as much education as possible and to use it for the benefit of all. For the first two decades, school classes were held in temporary buildings and even in homes. In 1890 a proper school was built on the northeast corner of Main and 1st North. The original one story structure had walls of hewn stone gathered from the surrounding hills. With ever growing population, the roof of the school was removed in 1896 and a second story with brick walls was added along with a belfry on top to complete the "Academy", shown here. The Academy Bell could be heard clearly throughout the town, calling children to school on weekdays and everyone to church on Sundays. The bell signaled curfew each evening, sounded solemnly for funerals and rang wildly as an alarm for public emergencies such as fires and floods.

By 1914 the Academy was overflowing with students eager to learn so some grades were held in other buildings such as the "Ward Hall" which can be seen on the left side of the photograph. A new 14 room school, to house all grades from elementary through high school, was completed in 1917-18 atop "Monument Hill" at the east end of Center Street. Later school buildings followed over the decades.

For many years after the Academy was torn down, the Bell was stored away, forgotten, then rediscovered. In 2004, as an Eagle Scout project, Landon Casebolt erected the pedestal on which the bell stands here for you to reflect on things that made this town what it is today.

True to Their King

When the British decided to invade the southern colonies, they were counting on the presence of large numbers of "Loyalists," American colonists who remained loyal to Britain's King George III. Like the Patriots, Loyalists formed themselves into militias.

During the British invasion of South Carolina in 1780, these Loyalist fighting groups were asked to secure strategic locations throughout the Backcountry for British use. It was this plan that led to the presence of two hundred Loyalists on the property of Edward Musgrove.

Slipping through the night of August 18, 1780, two hundred Patriot militiamen had headed south from their camp on the Broad River, intent on attacking a similarly sized Loyalist force at Musgrove's Mill. Before sunrise the next morning, they regrouped just north of the Enoree River, only to learn that three hundred reinforcements — most of them Provincial Regulars — had swelled the Loyalist ranks during the night.

Worse, the now outnumbered Patriots soon lost the advantage of surprise when a Loyalist patrol discovered their presence. Unable to retreat, the Patriots were forced to make hasty plans for battle.

A Rare Glimpse of a Crucial Road

near Enoree, South Carolina.
Nothing was more important for communication and transport than a good road. Here you can see the wagon track that connected the Enoree and Broad rivers and prompted the British to establish camp nearby. The road ran through the center of the American line and played a strategic role in the Battle of Musgrove's Mill.

When Patriot forces headed south from the Broad River toward Musgrove's Ford, they stayed off the main road to avoid detection in a region controlled by Loyalists. Finally, rejoining the road near here, the Americans tried to spy on the enemy encamped along the Enoree's south bank.

Early on August 19, 1780, a small detachment of mounted Patriot militiamen fled up this hillside with Loyalist and Provincial forces hot on their heels. Minutes earlier, those same Patriots, commanded by Captain Shadrack Inman, had charged down the hill to attack the British forces camped at the Musgrove home on the far side of the Enoree River.

As the British returned fire, the outnumbered Patriots retreated, appearing to wither under intense opposition. Instead , the British were being lured into a deadly trap.

Enoree, South Carolina.
As Captain Inman and his troopers continued their planned retreat, the Loyalist and Provincial soldiers gave chase. Here, some of the British followed the wagon road while others navigated around the large trees.

It was a strenuous advance for the British forces as most were on foot rather than horseback. Adding to the challenge were the heavy woolen uniforms of the Provincials and the coarse, homemade clothes worn by the Loyalists. This uphill chase on a hot, humid Carolina morning was a grueling preparation for battle.
