A Nation that

a nation dedicated
to preservation
of a freedom won
by the sacrifice of life
itself. These emblems

dedicated to the valiant
dead of the armed
forces who ventured far,
fought bravely, and gave
their lives to preserve
freedom and liberty
in our land. Together
they lie here in mute
testimony to the manner
in which they lived,
worked and fought to

Lewiston, New York.
This Hopewell-style burial mound dates to A.D. 160+80. Thousands of similar mounds are located in the Ohio River Valley where the Hopewell lived in small scattered settlements from about 200 B.C. to A.D. 500. The Hopewell mound builders were great traders and very artistic people who were known to have associated with and influenced people far from their Ohio homeland. This is one of the few burial mounds found in western New York and southern Ontario. Who was buried here and why remains a mystery. Please respect this sacred burial area.

Hopewell influence spread from central and southern Ohio throughout the region shown in orange. The Hopewell trading network extended over even greater distances. Stars and cross hatching indicate the sources of trade materials. Map clarified by Arthur W. McGraw, 1995.

Lewiston, New York.
This 172-acre park is situated below the Niagara Escarpment and the Niagara Gorge, and affords excellent views of the Niagara River and surrounding area.

Artpark opened in 1974 as a seasonal outdoor cultural state park, the first in the country to do so. It provided artists with a spectacular setting in which to work, live and draw inspiration. Named after Earl W. Brydges, a member of the New York State Senate from 1949 to 1972, Artpark is dedicated to presenting the finest in performing and visual arts programs.

These include Broadway musicals, and classical, jazz and pop music concerts, as well as arts classes, workshops, demonstrations, and installations.

The Lower Landing Archaeological District, dedicated here in 1999, is a key point in the broader Colonial Niagara Historic District. It includes two nationally-designated historic sites; the Lewiston Indian Burial Mound and the Lewiston Portage Landing Site.

The park has picnic facilities, access to fishing, and hiking opportunities. The north end of the Niagara Gorge Trail System is located here with two trails beginning off the small parking area at the south end of the park. The lower trail runs parallel o the Niagara River with staircases leading to the base of the Gorge for fishing. It connects up to the upper trail through a series of switchbacks and steps. The upper trail climbs to the top of the gorge, and connects up with the rim trail that leads to Devil's Hole State Park.

Some of the wildlife in the park includes the Turkey Vulture, Northern Mockingbird, Red-tailed Hawk, Black-crowned Night Heron, wintering Bonaparte's Gull, Northern Water Snake, Eastern Milk Snake, Red-backed Salamander, Red Fox, Raccoon, Virginia Opossum, and eastern Grey Squirrel.

The Gully and Portage Road

$

Lewiston, New York.
Located at the base of the Niagara Escarpment, the ravine known as the Gully provided a naturally sheltered docking area where the Niagara River flows out of the steep and unnavigable Niagara Gorge. From this docking area, the Gully provided access to the lower tiers of the Escarpment. The docking area, the steep pathway up the Gully, and the land atop the Gully formed the northern terminus of the Niagara Portage - a nine-mile route along the eastern side connected the Upper and Lower Landings. After scrambling up the embankment from the river, Seneca porters transferred their goods to carts or "cradles" that carried the goods from the gully up the remaining 350 feet to the top of the Escarpment. From there the goods were transported along the Portage Road to the Upper Landing, which was located along the shore of the Niagara River, above the Falls.

Between 1958 and 1961, the construction of the Niagara Power Project dramatically altered the landscape, obscuring the original contours of the land and removing almost all traces of the original gully. Over 9.5 million cubic yards of rock and dirt excavated upriver were deposited over the area that is now Artpark. The upper parking lot, directly behind you, is one of the results of these deposits. The construction of the Niagara Parkway further altered the landscape as the steep Portage Road between Lewiston and the top of the Escarpment was graded into a gentle slope.
