Riverside Swimming Pool

Wyoming, Sweetwater County, Green River
The Green River swimming pool was constructed at this location in the early 1930s and opened to the public in July 1931. The front foundation is still visible. After the structure had been demolished and the pool filled in, the area was flooded in the winter for ice skating.
The town council records in 1930 show the approval for issuance of a $25,000 bond for the construction of an Island Park Pavilion building and a town outdoor swimming pool.
This municipal outdoor swimming pool, named Riverside Swimming Pool, furnished enjoyment and pleasure for residents of Green River and the entire County during the summer months. School buses from Rock Springs, Superior and Reliance transported children to enjoy the only pool in the area. The popularity of the outdoor pool continued until the Monroe Indoor Swimming Pool was constructed in the 1960s.
The pool was 50 feet by 135 feet with 44 dressing rooms on the north side. Entrance was from the east with an office, check room with wire baskets for valuables, snack bar, and swimming suit rental. A girls shower room was on the north front area, with a boys shower room on the south front area. A high spring-board diving platform was at the west end of the pool along with a lower board. In later years, a long slide provided enjoyment for all at the shallow east end of the pool. A heating boiler took the chill off the water, which still remained quite cool.
A lifeguard was always on duty.

Swimming pool fees in 1932 were:
Children, 18 and under ... 15¢
Persons over 18 years of age ... 25¢
Children 18 and under with swimming suit rental ... 20¢
Persons over 18 years of age with swimming suit rental ... 25¢

William Ashley - 1825

Leaving Missouri in 1824, William Ashley led a large group of men west in search of riches - beaver. Ashley and his crew arrived on the banks of the Green River (or Seeds-ke-dee as it was called then) on April 9th, 1825 near the mouth of the Big Sandy River north of here. The men divided into four groups to explore the area for beaver.
Ashley supervised the building of "bull boats" - clumsy crafts of buffalo hides stretched over a willow frame and then led 7 men down the Green River. His was the first recorded river trip on the Green.
The voyagers passed by Expedition Island on Sunday, April 25, 1825. They walked around many rapids including Ashley Falls, now under Flaming Gorge Reservoir.
They continued downriver through the Green's canyons until they arrived in the Uinta Basin (now Utah) on June 16th. From there, Ashley left the river and made his way back to this area for the first of the great annual rendezvous held on Henry's Fork in July 1825.
Though not widespread, word of Ashley's decent (sic) of the river gradually spread in the "States" letting others know that river travel down the Green was possible. Later mountain men used dugout canoes made from cottonwood logs to float the Green.

Born in Galveston, Peter Leroy Colombo overcame disabilities to become a highly accomplished lifeguard. Born in 1905, Colombo lost his hearing, speech and use of his legs at the age of seven, due to meningitis. His brothers took him to the Texas coast where he swam, regaining use of his legs, though his hearing never returned. In 1915, Colombo began to attend the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, where he learned to read lips and communicate in sign language, and where he also continued to train in swimming. He returned to Galveston in 1921 and soon joined the Surf Toboggan Club, a group of volunteer lifeguards.
Colombo became a hired lifeguard at the age of 18. In a time of segregation, he would go on to save hundreds from drowning, regardless of race, over a career spanning approximately 50 years. In addition, Colombo set many endurance and speed records in swimming matches, often participating in races that were up to 30 miles long. He was also a pioneer surfer on Galveston’s beaches.
Colombo officially retired in 1967, but continued to swim and serve as a lifeguard when he was able. When Peter Leroy Colombo died in 1974, he was recognized with a moment of silence by the Texas state legislature. He had officially saved over 900 people from drowning, with many other rescues going unrecorded. In 2005, the natatorium at the Texas School for the Deaf was named in his honor. Today, Peter Leroy Colombo is remembered as an individual who did not allow disabilities to limit him, risking his life to rescue hundreds along the beaches of Galveston.

Powell - Colorado River Expedition 1869

Wyoming, Sweetwater County, Green River
On May 24, 1869, the Powell - Colorado River Expedition, ten men and four boats strong, embarked from these environs on a voyage of adventure resulting in civilization's first definite knowledge of this continent's last unexplored major river drainage. Out of the still shaded, but no longer unknown, depths of that river's Grand Canyon came, 98 days later, six tattered river veterans to triumphantly beach two water-worn and rock-mauled hulks.
This adventure, no odyssey if measured by elapsed time alone, easily qualifies by the other standards of suspense, danger and action. Its successful completion captured and held the admiration of a nation.
John Wesley Powell himself -- cast in the hero's role and endowed with rare executive and scientific talents -- rode the crest of national acclaim into public service and the highest councils of the republic. Over the years his ever-sharpening executive ability resulted in the creation and productiveness of important federal agencies, while his scientific genius contributed to the advancement of such divergent disciplines as ethnology, geology and agronomy. Perhaps his greatest gift to the nation, conceived during Colorado River explorations, was the theory of arid-land culture, as developed, through his success in fathering the Bureau of Reclamation. This theory has changed the face of western landscapes and caused extensive geographic regions to blossom and thrive.

Bivouac
For two days, July 2nd and 3rd, 1759, a force of 3,000 soldiers under the command of Brigidier General John Prideaux camped here. The army was advancing along the lake on a campaign from Oswego to Four Mile Creek, near Fort Niagara. Here they prepared for the eventual seige of Fort Niagara by conducting artillery drills, cooking rations, and checking personal weapons.
Bird's Eye View of the Bay and Encampment from the North
Loaded bateaux were hidden in the bay to avoid detection by French lake patrols.
Camps were specifically arranged to insure unit integrity and allow quick and easy movement for unit assemblies and response to enemy attacks.
Light infantry guarded the land side of the camp.
Remains of Fort de Sables? The soldiers may have found evidence of earlier occupation. French fur trader Louis Thomas de Joncaire built a fur trading post here in 1716.
American Indians probably built brush shelters on site.
Basic Shelter
Officers and men lodged in tents. Officer marquees, resembling small circus tents, provided more space compared to the enlisted mens' wedge tents. Captains and above had their own marquee, while lieutenants and ensigns billeted two to a tent. Five elisted men would share one wedge tent.
Food Preparation
While here, five-man groups were ordered to form a mess and prepare and cook a four day supply of food for the entire force. Food items commonly issued were beef, pork, peas, beans, rice and bread. Food was boiled in single cooking kettles over open fires.
Weapons Inspection
The soldiers' Brown Bess muskets were regularly inspected by a company grade officer to insure they were fully operational and clean. Orders stated that "all the mens' arms and cartouche boxes" were to be laid out so that "at a moments warning" the men could be battle ready.
Artillery Drills
A detachment of Royal Artillery was responsible for the cannon, howitzers, and mortars. Under the command of Captain Samuel Strachey, the artillerymen kept the guns operational.

Early European Visitation
1759 Brigadier General John Prideaux's army camps here on its way to attack Fort Niagara.
1756 Captain John Bradstreet proposes once again to build "a fort and trading house" to secure Iroquois allegiance, but again no fort is built.
1754 English consider building a fort to counter French pressure on Seneca for their allegiance against the English, but fail to do so.
1721 English build Fort Schuyler nearby to compete with French fur trading efforts.
1716 Fort de Sables established by French merchant Thomas de Joncaire as a fur trading post to trade with Seneca.
1669 French explorer Robert Cavelier Lasalle visits on August 12.

Major military campaigns followed the Great Lakes Seaway Trail.
