Louisiana, Acadia Parish, Rayne
The site of St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Cemetery was determined after the new settlement of Rayne was established. Huge wooden wheels were made and the old church from the original Poupeville settlement was mounted on them and moved to this location in 1882. The cemetery, adjacent to the church, was the only known Christian cemetery for many years, where the graves were placed in a north-south position lengthwise. According to ancient Christian customs, graves are positioned east-west so the bodies of the dead lie facing the rising sun, the symbol of Christ's resurrection. Folklore about the cemetery's misalignment has been passed down over the years in stories, but no one knows for certain why this cemetery does not follow tradition.

Where Have All the Saguaros Gone?

Arizona, Tucson
The view from this hill has changed a lot over the years. In the 1930s, this was the most spectacular cactus forest in Arizona. But no one knew that these aging giants were near the end of their lives. Today we speculate that mild weather in the late 1800s may have nurtured this forest of giants. Those who created Saguaro National Monument in 1933 believed the forest would last forever.

In February 1937, a cold front brought record low temperatures to Tucson. A few years later saguaros began to die at an alarming rate. For a decade, scientists and the public struggled to deal with the "cactus blight." Following another killing freeze in 1962, researchers realized that temperatures below freezing for more than 20 hours could kill saguaros.

Before 1980 almost no young saguaros could be found here. Predictions of doom were made: "the last saguaro will die in the 1990s." In 1979, the National Park Service acquired all grazing rights in the Cactus Forest. After decades of trampling by cattle, young saguaros began to sprout under palo verde and mesquite "nurse trees." The trend toward renewal continues today.

Accès Guimard

France, Île-de-France, Paris, Paris

In 1899, leading Art Nouveau architect, Hector Guimard, was selected to design the subway access stations in Paris.

But in 1900, when the subway stations opened, the decorative entrances shocked Parisians. The spelling "Métropolitain" lacked readability, they claimed, and the tulip masts used to light the access at night were monstrous.

In 1902, future subway station designs were awarded to lesser known architects. By 1913, Guimard's designs were no longer being installed and, during station renovation work in the 1960s, many of them were removed and replaced with modern structures.

At the end of the 20th century, new molds were made to restore Guimard's designs as historical monuments to his work.

English Text:

The area before you was called the "Theatre" by Evans because its shape reminded him of later theatres (Figure 1). It is a platform and rows of steps that form an angle. At the bottom of the steps is the end of a narrow raised road that divides a paved court. Evans believed that the court was used for ceremonies watched by the standing viewers.

The raised paved road continues in the opposite direction. It passes underneath the modern road to Herakleion connecting the Palace with the Minoan town, which extended to the West and North. Evans named the road the "Royal Road". Along the length of the road are town houses with workshops on the ground floor and residential areas on the upper floor.

The Grange Bateliere in the Middle Ages was a fortified farm (Grange Bataillée). This name was later given to a small water race, which was removed during the late eighteenth century. At number 10 on this street was built, under Louis XV, the hotel Biéville or Nolivos. It was under Louis Philippe that two arcades opened for the passage Jouffroy, in 1845, and the Passage Verdeau in 1846. The first was created on part of the Aguado hotel gardens (current town hall). Their construction used new industrial materials such as steel structures and glass roofs. The transition have enjoyed great popularity since they opened. Lined with elegant shops and sheltered from the rain, these charming places attracted leisurely visitors. In the nineteenth century, there were also restaurants, tea rooms and performance venues. These passages were later celebrated by the surrealists, Louis Aragon and Walter Benjamin.
