Boone Way

The 96-mile stretch of road from Crab Orchard to Cumberland Gap was known as Boone Way. Col. James Maret, an early advocate of road improvement, was responsible for cutting of roadbed and it’s first paving. As L&N railroad agent and telegraph operator in Mt. Vernon, Maret developed a concern for road conditions. Highway was in use by 1918; the Boone Way became US 25.

Born in Garrard Co., Maret came here in 1877. He established this county’s first telephone exchange and newspaper; was town clerk for 25 years. Maret served as executive secretary of Kentucky’s Good Roads Association, and in 1929 published a routing guide, listing over 1200 points in U.S. and Canada. He died in Old Masonic Home, Shelbyville; buried, Elmwood Cem., Mt. Vernon.

The 52nd Kentucky county. Created out of Knox, Lincoln, Madison, Pulaski counties. Isaac Lindsey, who came here with a hunting party in 1767, observed a lone rock which resembled an ancient castle. From this the river was named, later the county. Dr. Thomas Walker and party, first white men to visit the interior of Kentucky, were at this rock as early as 1750.

Germantown Cemetery

Founded by Germantown Methodist Episcopal Church on land bought in 1840 from George P. and Nicey B. Shepherd, early subdividers of the village, this cemetery served the whole community for 125 years. A stone fragment dated 1843 marks the earliest known burial spot. Three Methodist Church buildings have stood on this site; one was destroyed during the Civil War, and one was struck by lightening and burned in 1921.

Christ Little Tulpehocken Church

Organized 1729, this is one of the early Lutheran churches founded by Rev. John Caspar Stoever, Jr., who started the parish records in 1730. A log church, erected before 1749, was replaced by the present stone building in 1809. Since 1853, Lutheran and Reformed services have been held here.

Erected 1749; once owned by Baron Stiegel. Operated by ironmaster George Ege, 1774-1824. Hessians were employed in Revolutionary days to cut a rock channel for water supply. Site is to the north of Womelsdorf.

A building erected about 1748 by Moravians, for use as a church and school, stands on the side road, about 1.5 miles away. Here they conducted a boarding school, 1745-51; and built a later schoolhouse, since demolished, in 1776.

De Benneville House

Exeter Friends Meeting

Established 1725 as Oley; name changed to Exeter, 1742. Present stone meeting house built 1759 near site of two previous log structures. Buried here are members of the Boone, Ellis, Hughes, Lee, and Lincoln families. Meetings discontinued 1899; building reopened for worship in 1949.

St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Croatian Church, North Side

The first Croatian Catholic parish in America was established in 1894. The 1901 church was a center for spiritual and social Croatian culture. Croatian immigrants fled religious, economic, and political oppression to pursue new lives in Pittsburgh. Its familiar geography and economic opportunities attracted many Croatians. Despite a 14-year preservation effort, the modified Romanesque church and grotto were razed in 2013.

Pioneer ironmaster and opponent of slavery who died 1730. Built Pennsylvania's first ironworks nearby, 1716. In ensuing decade he erected Pine Forge and built this mansion; in 19th century it was an Underground Railroad stop. Academy was founded here, 1945.
