Pennsylvania, Adams County, Gardners
This is the site of Pine Grove Furnace Prisoner of War Interrogation Camp (1943-1945). Here the U.S War Department operated a clandestine facility where intelligence officers interrogated enemy prisoners. During its thirty-month existence, thousands of German and Japanese prisoners were questioned here in an attempt to learn about the Axis war effort and the development of new weaponry. From 1787-1919 the site was a farm serving the iron industry. The Civilian Conservation Corps operated Camp s-51-PA here from 1933-1943. Following the war it became Church Camp Michaux, 1946-1972, a cooperative effort of the United Church of Christ and the United Presbyterian Churches. The area is now a protected area within Michaux State Forest.

This land was first deeded to Jeremiah McKibben in 1791. It passed through several owners until 1846 when Thompson Galbraith and Thomas Paxton sold the land containing a 2-story brick tavern to Peter A. Ahl.

Because of its proximity to the railroad, the business prospered. In 1860 when Captain Samuel Speese was the hotel keeper, the 3rd floor was added and the basement was dug out. In September of 1862 Captain Speese enlisted in the 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry, but resigned his commission 10 ½ months later due to the press of business.

In the meeting rooms of this hotel the Big Spring Turnpike was planned, and later the ill-fated Harrisburg and Potomac Railroad organized, and later still, the Newville High School Alumni Association organized.

With Ahl’s bankruptcy in 1893 the hotel was sold for $4000 to S.D. Mowery, who also went bankrupt then George Dock Frey purchased it in 1916 for $3,420. From 1920 until 1923 the building was leased to the Pennsylvania State Police Training School. Afterwards the building was turned into apartments, and was finally demolished in the late 1950s.

Newville Trolley

Pennsylvania, Cumberland County, Newville
In September of 1910 the Cumberland Railway Co. began trolley service between Newville and Carlisle. The cars left Newville and Carlisle every hour on the hour from 6:00 a.m. to midnight. Each trolley carried a motorman and a conductor whose duties included taking care of packages, firing the stove in winter and collecting fares. From Newville the fare was five cents to Goodyear, ten cents to Plainfield, fifteen cents to Meadowbrook and twenty cents to Carlisle.

With the advent of cheap hydro-electric power in the 1800’s trolleys, which were powered by electricity, could offer lower fares than railroads, and for short trips this method of travel became popular in the Cumberland Valley.

Because this line was a latecomer to the scene and automobiles were becoming popular, it failed to attract sufficient riders to keep it profitable. Even the trolley park east of Newville with its picnic grounds could not forestall the inevitable and the last trolley ran on Sunday October 31, 1920. The tracks were removed in 1921.

From Seaport to National Park

District of Columbia, NW Washington, Georgetown

During America's early days, the Georgetown waterfront thrived as a port lined with wharves and seagoing vessels. It later became an industrial site. Now it is a National Park. How does an old port and industrial site become a National Park?

In the 1960s, the Georgetown waterfront was condemned for an interstate highway, which was never built. Planning began then to convert the waterfront into a park.

Progress slowed until, in 1985, the District of Columbia transferred the waterfront land to the National Park Service (NPS). Ten more years passed. Then in the late 1990s, a surge in interest brought a partnership that would highlight the Potomac's signature sport: rowing. The Georgetown Waterfront Park Commission, a volunteer organization, galvanized local residents, the rowing community, regional leaders, and the NPS in an effort which would bring the Park to fruition.

"Senator Charles H. Percy"
Senator Charles H. Percy was pivotal in the creation of the Georgetown Water Park. Senator Percy - a Georgetown resident, lover of the waterfront and supporter of local high school rowing - chaired the Georgetown Waterfront Park Commission that was so instrumental in the park's creation.

The Commission and its successor organization, the Friends of Georgetown Waterfront Park, helped redesign plans and raise funds to build the park. With the generous support of the Friends of the District of Columbia, coupled with an NPS Centennial initiative grant and the tireless dedication of citizens and public officials, the Georgetown Waterfront Park is now a National Park for all to enjoy.

Karanlık (Dark) Church

English:
To the north, a winding stairway leads into the rectangular, barrel vaulted narthex of the Dark Church. This church has a cruciform plan, the arms of which are cross vaulted. There is a center dome, with four columns and three apses. This church gets its name from the tiny window in the narthex which only allows a small amount of light in. Due to the absence of light the colours of the frescoes are still vivid.

The church and the narthex are richly decorated in scenes from the bible and the story of Jesus. As in Elamlı (Apple) and Çarıkı Churches there are also scenes from the old testament. The church dates back to the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th centuries.

Scenes: Deesis, annunciation, journey to Bethlehem, nativity, adoration of the Magi, baptism, raising of Lazarus, transfiguration, entry into Jerusalem, Last Supper, betrayal of Judas, crucifixion, anastasis, women at the tomb, blessing and mission of the Apostles, Ascension, hospitality of Prophet Abraham, three young me in the fiery furnace and portraits of the saints.

Sahneler: Deesis, müjde, Beytüllahim’e yolculuk, doğum, üç müneccimin tapınması, vaftiz, Lazarus’un diriltilmesi, başkalaşım, kudüs’e giriş, son akşam yemeği, İhanet, İsa çarmıhta, İsa’nin cehenneme inişi, göğe çıkışı, İbrahim peygamber’in misafirperverliği, üç yahudi gencin yakılması ve aziz Tasvirleri.

The New River is estimated to be more than 100 million years old, making it one of the oldest rivers in the world. It is a remnant of the prehistoric Teays River. The first written documentation of the New River was by explorers Thomas Batte and Robert Hallow. A Totera Indian guide led them there on 13 Sept. 1671. First called Wood’s River, most likely for Abraham Wood, who launched the expedition, it became known as the New River by the middle of the 18th century. The New River is known for its treacherous current and stretches more than 300 miles through Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia.

Imperial Palace

Imperial Palace
The imperial palace stands on the summit of the Palatine and extends to its slopes, occupying much of the hill. It was built by the architect Rabirius on the orders of Domitian (AD 81-96) and inaugurated in AD 92; it was the official residence of all later emperors. The palace was divided into three sectors: an official or “public” area (the so-called Domus Flavia), a sector hosting private apartments (the so-called Domus Augustana) and a large garden in the form of a stadium with its annexes (the so-called Stadium). The palace was made of brick and its massive foundations were superimposed on earlier buildings, some of which (the “House of the Griffins”, the so-called Domus Transitoria) can be visited underneath the Domitianic structures. Conserved to almost its original extent, the palace represented a turning point in the history of Roman architecture, codifying the typology of the dynastic palace in Rome. Its importance is evident from the fact that the word “palace” itself (palazzo, palais, palacio, etc.) comes from the Latin Palatium, or Palatine, because this is where the first imperial residence was built, a model for all later palaces. Its construction made a deep impression on Domitian’s contemporaries. Statius and Martial, his court poets, composed admiring descriptions of it, praising its extraordinary size, the beauty of its decorations and the luxury of its furnishings. “The palace was so vast”, wrote Martial, “that one’s eyes became tired looking at it, and so tall that in comparison the pyramids of Egypt seemed laughable”.
