Frances Anne Hopkins, an Unrecognized Woman
Do you know this woman? She once walked the ground under you feet. In fact, she lived in Lachine from 1858 to 1860 and spent the next eight years in Montreal. Frances Anne was born in England under the name of Beechey. At age 20, she married Edward Marin Hopkins, who held an important position in the Montreal Department of the Hudson’s Bay Company.
In 1870, the Art Association, ancestor of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, presented sixteen watercolours by Mrs. Hopkins. She also exhibited several times in England.

Frances Anne Hopkins, an Original Artist
English:
Frances Anne Hopkins lived at cross-currents with her era. Not only was she a woman artist, but she travelled the fur trade route from Lachine to Lake Superior. Instead of illustrating conquest and colonization, she chose to paint the events of everyday lives. In two of the opposite paintings, she depicts herself sketching on the canoe trip.

Here, on 26 October 1813, a Canadian force of about 300 consisting of Voltigeurs, Canadian Fencibles, Sedentary and Select Embodied Militia and Indians, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Michel de Salaberry, halted 5,700 American troops led by Major General Wade Hampton. In turning back the American advance on Montréal de Salaberry and his militiamen thwarted the most ambitious enemy invasion of the War of 1812 and saved the province.

Quebec, Le Haut-Richelieu RCM, Saint-Paul-de-l'Île-aux-Noix
English:
When war was declared between the United States and England, in June of 1812, Canada again risked being attacked from the south. The Lake Champlain-Richelieu River corridor represented the easiest way to invade Montrêal. Île-aux-Noix quickly acquired key strategic significance. Sir George Prevost, then governor-in-chief of British North America chose to act swiftly. As the Americans and British raced for military supremacy on Lake Champlain, the naval shipyard of Île-aux-Noix developed rapidly. Construction activity reached its peak in the summer of 1814 with the launch of the Confiance, a 12000 ton, 36 gun brigantine. In September 1814, while not quite completed, the vessel took part in an important naval battle in the Bay of Plattsburgh. Captured by the Americans, the ship lost its anchor as well 15 of its cannons that rapidly sank to the bottom of Lake Champlain. One of its anchors , salvaged from the water in 1996, can be admired in the entrance hall of Plattsburgh City Hall. The shipbuilding continued during the year that followed the war. The garrison was reduced throughout the 1820s, until finally, in 1834, the naval shipyard of Île-aux-Noix was shut down completely. Between 1819 and 1829, the British erected am imposing new stone military fortification, complete with moats, renaming the site “Fort Lennox”.

Desperate Escape

Maryland, Frederick County, Frederick
After Union General Wallace ordered the covered bridge burned, the railroad bridge became the only route of escape for Lieutenant Davis and his men, who were seperated from the rest of the Union forces by the river. His troops fought bravely all morning and afternoon, but by 4:00 p.m. the situation grew critical—the Confederates attacked with great force. Davis wrote, "It seemed we should be swept into the river." Overwhelmed, Davis ordered a retreat across the railroad bridge. Some of his men were shot before reaching the bridge, some fell through the bridge ties, but most escaped with Davis unharmed.

I knew nothing of the situation, or plan of battle, except as apparent to the eye...I received no orders from any source after the first gun was fired in the morning.

East North Broadway Historic District

Ohio, Franklin County, Columbus
East North Broadway Historic District North Broadway was platted by the Loren and Dennison Company in 1890. East North Broadway originally extended from High Street to the Big Four Railroad (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and St. Louis RR, later the New York Central), one mile east, where it terminated with a depot and post office. The intersection with Calumet Street (also known as Beech Hill) was originally designed with a landscaped circle in the center of the intersection with the road around it. The traffic circle was removed, but evidence of it remains where the sidewalks mark the outer edges of the circle.

The District encompasses 117 primary buildings and 86 secondary buildings representing a wide variety of housing styles that were popular during the late 19th to mid 20th centuries, including Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, English Revival, Dutch Colonial Revival, Romanesque Revival, Craftsman, Bungalow, and mid-century modern.

On July 8, 2010 the District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. This historic marker was erected through the cooperative efforts of the North Broadway Street Association and the Clintonville Historical Society in September 2010.
