California, San Diego County, Camp Pendleton
This 6,000-square-foot ranch complex is C-shaped, with a carriage house at one end and a two-story building at the other. It is one of only a few authentic nineteenth-century adobe ranch houses of its kind—combining both Hacienda and Monterey architectural styles.

What is Monterey-style architecture?
Monterey-style buildings are two-story buildings with a porch across the front at the second story.

What is Hacienda-style architecture?
Hacienda-style buildings are one story, with rooms arranged in a row and doors opening onto a covered porch.

The original construction was mainly adobe with rubble-stone footings. The walls had lime plaster exteriors and earthen plaster interiors witha lime whitewash. The two-story portion had 36"-thick exterior walls and 24"-thick interior walls. Wood timbers supported the second floor and roof, and the floors were made of wood.

What is adobe?
Adobe bricks are made of mud and straw. The mix is put into molds made of wood, and the bricks are dried in the sun.

What is lime?
Lime is made from shells or limestone, and is used in mortar, plaster, and whitewash.

1862 - John Forster obtains deed to Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores from his brother-in-law, Pio Pico.
1868 - Las Flores Adobe is built by Marcus Forster, son of John.
1869 - Las Flores becomes a stage coach stop.
1882 - Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores is sold to James C. Flood of San Francisco after the death of Forster and his wife.
1888 - Las Flores Adobe and 1,500 acres are leased to the Magee Family as tenant farmers.
1947 - U.S. government acquires the land to establish Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.
1968 - Ruth Magee, last resident of Las Flores, dies.
2000 - Adobe is restored by Camp Pendleton and the National Park Service.

Restoration of the Rancho Las Flores Abandoned since the 1960s, the ranch house and adjacent farm structures had slowly fallen into disrepair. Camp Pendleton and the National Park Service began an active restoration project in 2000.

The deterioration was reversed, and the structure was stabilized and seismically retrofitted to protect it from earthquakes.

History
Mexican and Spanish Period
1769
The first Spanish enter the valley.
The Spanish expedition led by Portola in 1769 encountered Native Americans at the village of Uchme here at Las Flores Creek.
At that time 5,000 - 10,000 Luiseño and Juaneño people lived in a 1,500 square-mile area.

1776
San Juan Capistrano is founded.
The founding of the missions and presidios was the beginning of Spanish political and military control over the Native Americans in the area.
The first Spanish in the area were mainly priests and soldiers.

1821
Mexico gains independence from Spain.
After Mexican independence, Spanish mission lands were divided up into land grants for ranching.
Most of the Native inhabitants were forced to leave by the 1840s.

American Period
1847
United States takes control of southern California.
After the United States took control of the area, cattle ranching declined and commercial farming flourished.

1942
Camp Pendleton is established.
Now the local economy revolves around the military. Many Americans first visit the Las Flores area as soldiers in the United States Marine Corps.

Today, the Luiseño people number more than 3,000 who are enrolled at six independent reservations covering less than 70 square miles in Sand Diego and Riverside counties. The Juaneño people have no reservation.

New York, Erie County, Buffalo
St. Ann's church was founded in 1858 to serve a then rural and sparsely settled east side of Buffalo. As the city grew, so did this parish and by the late 1800s, St. Ann's was among the largest Catholic parishes in the United States. Six other east side parishes were eventually carved out of St. Ann's original boundaries. Dedicated on May 16, 1886, this building replaced a smaller structure once located on Emslie Street near the site of our school, which was erected in 1895. Members of the society of Jesus have served St. Ann's since its founding. Sisters of St. Francis of Stella Niagara have served the parish since 1874.

Vermont, Washington County, Graniteville

In the late 1950’s Rock of Ages experimented with making lanes out of granite for use in commercial bowling alleys. Although a few such alleys were created, the concept never caught on. This prototype was used for many years by employees and visitors alike, but then was neglected and fell into disrepair. We have restored the old lane, with a few exceptions. We left the gutters as they are to demonstrate how the reinforced concrete has weathered, while the granite alley is virtually untouched by the passing years. There is no automation here. Step back in time with your family to an era when “pin boys” reset pins and returned balls. Take turns as the designated “pin person” and have a ball.

Overlea Waiting Station

Maryland, Overlea, Baltimore
The first streetcar service to Overlea began on July 14, 1903. Overlea and many other Baltimore suburbs developed when streetcar lines were extended from downtown. These lines allowed workers to live away from the noise and crowds of the city and commute rapidly to and from their jobs in city offices of factories. Soon after the completion of the Overlea streetcar line, hundreds of houses and cottages were built on streets off Belair Road.

The Overlea Waiting Station was built in 1917 at the turnaround of the Number 15 Belair streetcar line. Waiting stations were found on nearly all suburban streetcar lines but most are gone. The Overlea Waiting Station served passengers and crews through the end of the streetcar era.

Moorland YMCA Building

Texas, Dallas County, Dallas
In 1928, the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) of Dallas recognized a growing need for expanded facilities across the city. In the African American neighborhood of North Dallas, citizens raised $75,000 ($25,000 more than their goal) in contributions for a planned YMCA on Flora Street. The Rosenwald Fund, a national trust for construction of educational facilities, teacher housing, and YMCAs for African Americans in the southern United States, provided an additional $25,000. The Moorland YMCA was named for Dr. Rev. Jesse Edward Moorland, the second secretary of the Colored Men's Department of the YMCA in Washington, D.C. Architects Ralph Bryan and Walter Sharp of Dallas designed the three-story red brick building in Italian Renaissance Revival style. Completed in 1930, its design included cast stone features and the words “boys” and “men” inscribed over the two main entrances.

Through the 1950s, the Moorland YMCA was a social, cultural, and political center for Dallas’ African American community. It offered recreation and education programs for youth and served as a gymnasium for local schools. The facilities were one of the only places African American Dallasites could congregate outside of the church. Moorland YMCA was an integral meeting place for those involved in the Civil Rights Movement in Dallas. The building also provided sleeping rooms for African American visitors who found limited hotel facilities when visiting the city. By 1967, Moorland YMCA could no longer accommodate the demand of its members and it closed in 1970 after the construction of a new YMCA in Oak Cliff. A new Moorland YMCA opened on Ledbetter Street in 1973. In 1999, Dallas Black Dance Theatre became the owner of this historic property.

Born January 19, 1897 - Died April 14, 1975
Was a member of the Unemployed Brigade that
demonstrated for more work and better pay.
He carried on the cause when its leades gave up hope
and resigned. He stated "I'd rather be a dead hero
than a living coward"

He informed the labourers and unemployed
associated (LUA) in 1934, organizing boycotts,
demonstrations and pickets against large merchants.

He led public meetings at this
Battlefield Park talking about the Government's unfair
treatment of labourers.

He was jailed for sedition in 1935.
His Association's efforts paid off, however,
by wage increases for workers and more jobs.
He took the movement countrywide to shed light
on workers' rights.

This bust was rededicated on 18 September, 2013 by

The Québec Garrison Club embodies the British tradition of private clubs in which the military and civil elites gather. Founded in 1879 by Canadian militia officers, the Club has hosted countless social and recreational events over the years, as well as official visits and meetings. The building was originally constructed in 1816 as the headquarters of the Royal Engineers, and was later enlarged and modified.
