A Diversion

Maryland, Kent County, Rock Hall
Captain Peter Parker arrived at Swan Creek in the HMS Menelaus August 20, 1814. The British had terrorized towns in the Upper Bay all summer, but Parker came with a special mission---to divert attention from a strike against the U.S. Capital. While Parker raided Rock Hall, the main British force began its march to Washington from Southern Maryland.

Ravaging Storm
Parker’s squadron was still anchored off Rock Hall August 25 when the fierce storm that doused the smoldering Capitol Building and White House wreaked across the Bay. The British lost a supply of weapons when the vessel Mary capsized at Swan Point.

“The enemy passed…(Rock Hall) early in the morning up the bay, and proceeded above Pool’s Island, where they…sent their barge out in all directions, both in the Western and Eastern Shores.”
Baltimore Federal Gazette, July 15, 1814.

Quebec, Gaspésie– Îles-de-la-Madeleine (region), Percé
English:
Sent abroad from his native Montreal to complete his education, Logan established a reputation as a map maker and geologist in the mining districts of Wales which led to his appointment as the first Director of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1842. He supervised, and personally conducted much of the early scientific mapping of the province, and made the collection of Canadian minerals which became the basis of the National Museum. The first Canadian man of science to gain international recognition, he is commemorated by two mountains bearing his name, one in Gaspé and one in the Yukon. He died in Wales.

The Mormon Battalion at McPherson, Kansas

Kansas, McPherson County, near McPherson

On 3 September 1846, the Mormon Battalion camped near here on its way to fight in the war with Mexico. This small army of more than 500 men and officers had been recruited at Council Bluffs, Iowa, from among the Mormon pioneers (members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) who were en route to the Rocky Mountains. About one-tenth of the battalion suffered from "ague, billions, and congestive fever" during the march from Council Bluffs, but only the standard army medicines of "calomel, arsenic, and bitters of bayberry bark" were on hand to treat them with.

Here battalion members saw for the first time the prickly pear cactus and other semi-arid plants typical of the American Southwest. Their difficult 1700-mile journey through the dry and barren landscape between this campsite and the final destination at San Diego, California, evoked poems, songs, and art work, some of which have been preserved in diaries kept by battalion members.
