Miners Delight: The Boom’s Broken Promises

$

Wyoming, Fremont County, near Atlantic City
As the news of gold spread, the Sweetwater Mining District filled with miners who established Hamilton City about two miles east of here in 1867. The following year, the name of the town changed to Miners Delight, after a highly productive nearby mine. The Miners Delight mine produced the greatest wealth of any in the mining district while the town remained the smallest and most isolated. According to a 1916 government report, the Miners Delight mine and surrounding placers has produced over $2.5 million. The town’s population peaked around 100 in 1868. Its residents built log cabins, saloons, general stores, a hotel, and a stamp mill.

By 1870, the gold boom had ended. Over the next 70 years, the deserted town witnessed several mini-booms that brought a short-lived rush of people to Miners Delight. The last resident left in the 1970’s, at which time the Bureau of Land Management purchased the town’s buildings. Now, only ruins of the once booming town remain.

Prince Edward Island, Queens County, Charlottetown
English:
On November 30, 1905 fire destroyed several of the wooden manufacturing shops at the Charlottetown rail yard. To reduce the risk of future fires, it was decided to rebuild the shops in brick. E.A. Wallberg of Montreal was the contractor. The car shop was used for the construction of well-appointed passenger cars. Starting with a set of wheels at one end of the building, carpenters and machinists would send beautifully finished carriages out the massive doors at the other end. After 1910 the shop was used to repair dilapidated cars of get them ready for scrap. The building was extensively renovated in 2001. A substantial northwest wing was added at that time.

Railway Brass Shop

Prince Edward Island, Queens County, Charlottetown
English:
Built in 1876, this Island sandstone building was originally the office of the mechanical branch of the Prince Edward Island Railway. Later, it became the brass shop where brass parts required by the railway were fabricated. The large windows at the east end of the building were originally doors which allowed narrow gauge cars to enter the building for maintenance and repair. A disastrous 1905 fire destroyed a number of buildings in the rail yard and damaged this one. Renovated after the blaze, the current building is approximately half the size of the original structure. In later years it served as officies for the railway locomotive foreman and supervisors.

And when the enthusiastic telling
Of our time comes for those that
Haven’t been born but are announced
With a friendly face
We’ll come out winners those that
Have suffered most from it
Being ahead of your time is to suffer from it
But it’s beautiful to love the world with the eyes
Of one that hasn’t been born and it’s splendid
To know that you’ll be victorious when
Everything around you
Is so cold and so dark

Fragments of the Message of the Law 1.638 that created the Plaza of Espana.

There is no country in the Americas where Spanish is spoken from its beginnings which does not keep ties with the motherland’s spiritual influences of autonomy. The culture has gravitated and continues to gravitate above the ethnic groups of all countries of the Americas. No one has been able to erase the traits of their Spanish characteristics that give them their physical appearance. Strong but invisible ties join us to the immortal and perpetual Spain, giving breath to this miraculous progeny of people each with different embossing reflects the genius of race cuts in nature of liberal archetypal legacy of those institutions in perpetual Spain from the contemporary era that gave the standard for modern united architecture revived in the expressions of its culture of civilization assimilated in the mainland.

Fragments of message 1,638 law.
Creator of the Plaza Espana.

Mendoza, born under the spell of Hispanic creative genius, was never indifferent to the tradition of the race. It encourages the secular stimulus, the vibrant energy, the value and virtues of the breed. The thought to give the name of the mother country to one of the parks in the capital city of the province is an old aspiration of the Mendoza community. The reason why is the tribute they owe our full adhesion and our invariable feelings. Another aspect is our loyal recognition of the meritorious Spanish community. Mendoza is intimately linked to the heart of our people. Solidarity with our efforts, identified with our ideals, part of our sacrifices linked with glory and honor, our rapid progress, and noble part of our dreams of brotherhood, peace and work.

Hillsborough Bridge

Prince Edward Island, Queens County, Charlottetown
The first Hillsborough Bridge was constructed as a railway link to the southeastern part of the Island, although it was also a carriage bridge, too. The steel structure consisted of 12 spans. To facilitate river traffic it had a swing span over the deepest water. The bridge opened with great celebration in 1905 and served the communities on the Murray Harbour Line well until the mid 1950’s when it was judged unsafe for the trains. For the next twelve years, it served only automobile traffic. A new structure was opened in 1962, and more recently that bridge has been expanded and now accommodates four lanes of traffic coming to and from the Capital City.

”My father told me many years ago about the time the Murray Harbour train attempted to cross the bridge from the Charlottetown side and all bridge traffic was held up. Apparently the gasoline engine that opened the draw bridge was seized up and would not move. There was a schooner loaded with coal, awaiting to proceed through the draw to Falconwood Hospital Wharf to unload its cargo. They called on my father, one of the trainmen (who usually weighed in at that time at about 250 lbs.) to throw the large flywheel on the stationary engine or to apply whatever strength was necessary to get the gas engine going. Then the draw could be opened, the schooner could proceed to the wharf, and the train and other traffic could continue. - ”Growing up in Prince Edward Island” - Byron Burns
