Kansas, Douglas County, Lawrence

Known as "Phog" for his foghorn umpire calls and "Doc" for his osteopathic skills ("I won more games at the training table than on the sidelines"), Allen was KU's head basketball coach from 1920 until his retirement in 1956.

Truly a great teacher, with a career win-loss record of 746-264, Phog coached 14 All-Americans; 24 Conference Championships at Kansas; 3 National Championships teams and was National Coach of the Year in 1950.

Before helping establish an NCAA post-season tournament in 1939, Allen was instrumental in establishing basketball as an Olympic sport beginning in 1936 at the Berlin Games.

Married to Elizabeth Milton in 1908, "Bessie" was tutor to innumerable players, editor of articles and books written by her husband and hostess for media, fellow coaches and fans.

The Allens were the proud parents of six children: Mary (Hamilton); Forrest, Jr.; Milton; Jane (Mons); Robert; and Eleanor (Nelson).

When asked what his favorite team was, he said, "I will have to wait 25 years to see what kind of people they become and their contributions to society."

Born November 6, 1861 in Almonte Ontario, Canada and died November 28, 1939 in Lawrence, Kansas. Buried in Lawrence Memorial Park.

Dr. Naismith invented the game of basketball as a winter indoor sport for the YMCA at Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891.

In 1898 he accepted a position at the University of Kansas. His goal was to develop the University's Physical Education Department. He also agreed to accept the coaching position of K.U.'s first basketball team.

K.U.'s first games were played either in a local low ceiling roller skating rink or away from home due to the poor facilities at K.U. Naismith was instrumental in the development of the first modern gymnasium for basketball, the old "Robinson Gym" on the K.U. campus.

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts is named after him. He was elected posthumously to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1959.

He also was a 32nd Degree Mason.

Michigan, Jackson County, Jackson
On March 30, 1830, a commission appointed to choose Jackson County's seat of government reported: "A territorial road, call the St. Joseph's road, was last winter laid.... Where this road crosses the Grand river... a flourishing village is commenced." Named Jacksonburg, the village was surveyed and platted that year. Residents proclaimed the town the future site of the new state capital. The plat included a public square at the intersection of Jackson Street and the Territorial Road (present-day Michigan Avenue). By 1880s the square was a bustling business district comprising the county courthouse, the First Congregational Church and three commercial blocks, including the Blackwell Building, now known as the Old Post Office.

Michigan, Jackson County, Jackson
In 1834 thirteen Jackson pioneers established the Barry-Jackson Baptist Church in Sandstone Township. Five years later the Reverend David Hendee and seventeen members of that church formed the First Baptist Church in Jackson. Meetings were held in several locations until 1868, when construction began on the present church. J.R. Lewis provided the plans and specifications for this Romanesque Revival-style structure. When a lack of funds resulted in repeated construction delays, “Uncle Ben” Mosher, a member of the building committee, agreed to erect the walls for free if the materials were supplied. A donation from four church members in 1871 assured the structures completion. The church was eventually dedicated on March 10, 1872.

This monumental Romanesque Revival church was erected in 1859 according to plans by architect Horatio N. White of Syracuse, New York. It is this congregation's third church. In 1871 the building was raised eight feet to accommodate lower-level classrooms. In September 1861, on the eve of departing for duty in the Civil War, the "Jackson Blair Cadets" and the Jackson County Rifles gathered with their families in the crowded sanctuary. At Detroit's Fort Wayne the troops joined the Eighth and Ninth Michigan Infantries respectively. Beginning in the 1840s with the antislavery movement, the congregation actively participated in social reform -- most notably the temperance and civil rights crusades.

The origins of the First United Methodist Church can be traced to 1831 when preacher Elijah Pilcher arrived in “Jacksonburgh” to serve the town's growing Methodist community. Services were held around town until a small church was erected in 1850. The congregation built a larger church at the present site in 1868. In 1922 Detroit architect W.E.N. Hunter designed the current Neo-Gothic structure around the 1868 church, which is still visible in the sanctuary. A larger pipe organ and the Virginia and Katherine Hayes memorial window were installed at that time, donated by businessman C.B. Hayes. Prominent members also included W.A. Foote, co-founder of Consumers Power Company. The church was enlarged yet again in 1954.

Established in September 1961, the Sandy Hook Marine Laboratory was the first Federal scientific laboratory devoted solely to research on marine recreational fish and fishing. It was originally located on the bay approximately 300 ft from here in the former Ft. Hancock Post hospital building. The 1959 passage of the Marine Game Fish Act enabled the beginning of the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, and the naming of the Laboratory’s first director, vanguard biologist Dr. Lionel A. Walford. The laboratory was incorporated into the new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) within the U.S. Department of Commerce in 1970.

On September 21, 1985, the Laboratory suffered a tragic loss when fire destroyed its original building, built in 1899, along with years of pre-electronic research data, and a 35,000 volume library.

The laboratory’s current mission is to conduct research and understand the effects of environmental variability and human disturbances on fish and shellfish productivity relative to habitat.

Research emphasizes resource species of commercial or recreational value such as bluefish, weakfish, flounders, and shellfish.

Today the laboratory, named for Congressman James Howard, a staunch supporter of maintaining a Federal marine presence here in New Jersey, is comprised of two buildings: Bldg. 74, a restored former Ft. Hancock enlisted men’s barracks constructed in 1909, and a new (1993) laboratory building across the street, designed to complement original Ft. Hancock architecture. The new and renovated spaces contain modern laboratories, and a 32,000 gallon aquarium with running seawater from the bay, supporting 22 seawater labs. A control room contains computers for configuring, controlling and monitoring the lighting and seawater systems. Dedicated laboratory suites support chemical and microbiological research. The facility houses the Lionel A. Walford Library which is noted for its collection of fisheries-related archives and journals.

Researchers from this laboratory have authored thousands of scientific publications.

History of Taft

California, Kern County, Taft
As Taft’s first 100 years is being celebrated in 2010, let’s look back to see from where we came. Taft got its start when the railroad laid tracks to Taft and beyond. Siding Number Two was where it all started along the tracks in the vicinity of 2nd and Supply Row. Railroad cars were being unloaded with supplies for the rapidly expanding oil production for miles along what was called the Midway Sunset Oil Field. Buildings began springing up, followed by houses, businesses, schools, and everything needed for a progressive city to start itself. Electricity and a water supply were brought in. The voters approved incorporation and Taft became a city on November 7, 1910. The railroad began subdividing, installing streets, sidewalks, gutters, and curbs. The City of Taft was taking shape. The downtown area was flooded with workers at all hours of the day, working 12-hours shifts. It is said Taft resembled a mining town that never slept. Those were the good times and the good times have never stopped.

The curved brick wall to your right is the outside wall of our twenty-five ton wood-fired oven. The masonry circle continues inside the bakery. The oven itself is from J. Llopis of Barcelona, Spain, and was built on site by master craftsman Manuel de la Rosa. The finish brickwork was laid by Ernie Fantini and crew. Lawrence sculptor Laura Ramberg made the decorative terra cotta tiles, both on this outside portion of the wall and inside above the firebox door. Kate Dinneen of Walt Hull Iron Work forged the three pieces of wrought iron grillwork on the outside of the oven. The oven was completed and first fired in autum of 1995.

"...When I was in the second grade, my grandmother took me to Lawrence to raise me. And I was unhappy for a long time, and very lonesome... Then it was that books began to happen to me and I began to believe in nothing but books and the wonderful world in books.
