The Mojave Airport was created in 1935 as part of the Kern County Airport System. The fledgling airport was built to serve gold mines near Mojave. At the outset of World War Two, the airport became a Marine Corps Air Station that trained Marine Aviators in gunnery, producing the most productive aerial gunners in the Pacific War.

Following the war the airport was designed as a Naval Air Station that supported some of the first flight tests of what are now known as unmanned aerial vehicles. During the Korean Conflict, the airport was a Marine Corps Auxiliary Air Station from 1951 to 1959.

In 1972, local voters approved creation of what became the East Kern Airport District, and the airport became an incubator for the emerging private space industry, culmination in 2004 with SpaceShipOne winning the Ansari X-Prize. Over the years, the vision of General Managers Dan Sabovich and Stuart Witt, airport board directors, and a dedicated and innovative staff have contributed to the success of the Mojave Air and SpacePort

In 2010, as the airport celebrated its Diamond Anniversary, a new generation of civilian space vehicles were being developed and tested at the nation’s first commercial spaceport, which also supported a bustling industrial park and transloading of wind turbine components arriving on the airport’s extensive railroad system.

On this site Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel's original Flamingo Hotel stood from December 26, 1944 until December 14, 1993.

The hotel, which housed 77 rooms, including the notorious Mr. Siegel's “Bugsy Suite” or “Presidential Suite” as it was sometimes referred to, was unique in more way than one. The windowpanes, for instance, were bullet proof, and, although there was only one entrance to the top-floor suite, there were five possible exits. This included a hidden ladder from the hallway closet to a basement tunnel, which lead to an underground garage which Bugsy allegedly had a chauffeured getaway car awaiting at all times.

But Mr. Siegel’s preoccupation with safety and escape routes proved to be geographically misplaced. On June 20, 1947, 300 miles from Las Vegas at the Beverly Hills mansion of his girlfriend, Virginia Hill, Bugsy was killed in a hail of gunfire from unknown assailants.

Since that day, The Flamingo has change ownership 3 times, including final sale from Kirk Kerkorian to the Hilton Hotels Corporation in 1970.

Battle of the Spurs

Just before Christmas, 1858, John Brown "liberated" eleven slaves in Missouri. He hid them in a covered wagon and circled north on the underground railway toward Nebraska and freedom. En route a Negro baby was born. Late in January they reached Albert Fuller's cabin on Straight creek, a mile and a half south of this marker. Here a Federal posse barred their way. Both sides sent for reinforcements. Help for Brown arrived first, Topeka abolitionists leaving in the midst of Sunday church.

Declaring he would not be turned "from the path of the Lord," Brown, though still outnumbered, crossed the creek in spite of high water and the enemy entrenched on the other side. Demoralized by his audacity, the posse mounted and spurred away -- thus giving a name to the bloodless battle. This was Brown's exit from Kansas. In December, 1859, he was hanged for his treasonable attack at Harper's Ferry.

The shrine was built for Moccasin Creek pioneer Guiseppe Ferretti by his neighbor Joseph Cavagnaro in 1884. The roadside shrine, believed to be the only one of its kind along Hwy. 49, was reminiscent of the kind found along roadsides in Italy. Travelers would stop to rest and meditate and refresh themselves with the cool spring water that was piped from a nearby spring. A niche was built to hold a statue of St. Joseph, but remained empty over the years.

Arrastra

California, Tuolumne County, Groveland
The Spanish first introduced the arrastra to the New World in the 1500’s. The work “arrastra” come from the Spanish word “arrastre”, meaning to drag along the ground. When ore was quarried out of the hard rock mines, the quartz had to be crushed to free the gold. The arrastra was the earliest and simplest device introduced into the remote areas of the California Gold Fields to do this operation.

The simplest form of the arrastra was a flat-bottomed drag stone place in a circular, rock-lined pit and connected to a center post by a long arm. With a horse, mule or person provided power at the other end of the arm, the stone dragged slowly around in a circle.

Ore place between the stone floor and drag stone was crushed into a coarse powder after which water and quicksilver were added. The resulting slurry was removed to sluices (troughs) were the gold was recovered.

Thanks to the efforts of the Stanislaus National Forest Groveland Ranger District, the title to the drag stone and all of the floor stones of this arrastra was transferred to the Groveland Yosemite Gateway Museum. It has been reconstructed by local volunteers.
