The Knott House

$

Florida, Leon County, Tallahassee
Evidence points to George Proctor, a free black man, as the probable builder of this structure in 1843. The house was a wedding gift for Catherine Gamble, the bride of attorney Thomas Hagner. In 1865 the house was used as temporary Union Headquarters by Brigadier General Edward McCook. On May 20th, 1865, McCook read the Emancipation Proclamation from the front steps of the house, declaring freedom for all slaves in the Florida Panhandle.

After the Civil War a locally prominent physician, George Betton, bought the house, bringing with him a young buggy driver named William Gunn, a former slave. When Gunn expressed an interest in learning medicine, Betton funded his study at medical school and helped him establish a practice in Tallahassee. Gunn became Florida's first black physician.

In 1928 the Knott family acquired the house, had the front columns added, and lived here until 1985. William Knott served athe State of Florida for over forty years as its first State Tax Auditor, as Comptroller, and Treasurer. His wife Luella Knott was an artist, musician, and poet. She named her home "The House That Rhymes," and filled it with Victorian era furnishings. Almost every piece is adorned with a poem narrating history and moral lessons, written with charm and wit. Luella was also a political activist. The sale of alcohol was banned in the state's capital for over fifty years, in part because of Mrs. Knott's involvement with the temperance movement.

Founded in 1931, this garden is the work of renowned botanist Brother Marie-Victorin, who initiated and directed the project, and landscape architect Henry Teuscher, who conceived the design. The beauty, diversity, and the design of its collections reflect the founders’ vision of the “ideal botanical garden,” in terms of its aesthetic qualities, and its scientific, educational, and social functions. With its 22,000 plant species and cultivars, large exhibition greenhouses, thirty thematic gardens, it is one of the most important botanical gardens in the world.

Germany, Sachsen-Anhalt, Mansfeld-Südharz District, Allstedt

The impressive facility was built primarily in the period from the 15th-18th centuries. It was built instead of the former imperial palace Allstedt that nearly all early German rulers used as a temporary residence and governmental center from 935-1200. The significant main castle was extensively renovated in 1975 and expanded as a museum. In addition to exhibitions on the work of Thomas Müntzer and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in Allstedt, there is cast Harz iron art and historically designed rooms and various exhibitions to visit. Of particular interest are the functional castle kitchen, with one of the largest fireplaces in Europe, and the baroque chapel which hosts concerts and weddings.

Plains Bank was organized in 1901 by R. S. Oliver, who served as president. W. L. Thomas, vice president, and C. C. Lunsford as cashier. The Plains Bank belonged to a chain of eighty three banks operated by Banker's Trust Company of Atlanta. The bank closed in the summer of 1926.

After the bank closed, the building remained empty for several years. Jimmy Carter and his cousin, Hugh Carter, as young boys, sold hot dogs, hamburgers, and ice cream here on Saturdays. Later, in the 1930's, the Post Office was located here and served in this capacity until 1963. About this time, Hugh Carter began to use the building as the office for his worm farm.

After Hugh's death in 1999 it closed and remained unused until 2002. The Better Hometown Program of Plains acquired the building and renovated it, naming it "The Old Bank Cafe."

Emily Torstensenseim immigrated to the United States from Norway with her parents at the age of four. When she grew up she married a fellow Norwegian immigrant, Ole Thompson, who became a successful hotelier and grocer. Shortly after his death, his widow built this cream brick house for herself and her four children. It is a surviving and distinguished example of the smaller houses built in the first decades of Madison's history, many of which have been lost to the "march of progress."

North Wing / Ground Floor

Germany, Sachsen-Anhalt, Mansfeld-Südharz District, Allstedt

The outer walls of the trench and the courtyard are probably from the 15th century, likewise is the pointed arch doorway.

The oldest part is a tower-like building in the northeast corner. It is completely covered today and the only visible remnants are in the basement and ground floor (13th-14th centuries).

The medieval structural fabric remains to the height of the upper floor.

Cellar fixtures date from the mid-16th century, as the stonemasons' marks at the door of the cellar neck testify. In the 16th century, the chancellery was located in this space.

Between 1699 and 1707 the upper floor was built at the same time that the current room layout was made on the ground floor. Only slight changes were made during the 19th-20th centuries.

Castle Fountains / Burgbrunnen

Germany, Sachsen-Anhalt, Mansfeld-Südharz District, Allstedt

In the literature on Allstedt, so far the only mention of a well located in the main castle comes from a speech at the end of the 18th century by Duke Carl August.

In 1980/81 this well was discovered in the northwest portion of the patio and then exposed.

An inspection by cavers found that the well shaft is unlikely to have ever had a continuous inflow of water.

A fountain is already attested in 1504/05.

But as incoming water was bad [intermittent?], by the early 16th century a wooden water pipe from the so-called Borntal [Fount Valley?] provided water first to a wood- and later a stone fountain box.

The well is 43 meters deep and has under the vault a diameter of about 4 meters.

Architect: Benjamin G. McDougall (1865-1937)

The Old Chamber of Commerce Building or 333 Pine was built in 1917 by the Mills Estate Co. for Aetna Insurance Co. and designed by Benjamin G. McDougall.

In composition, the building is a two part vertical block with Renaissance/Baroque ornamentation. The building provides the visual terminus of Leidesdorff Street, and was built two years after the neighboring Old Sub-Treasury Building to the west.

The McDougalls were a family of architects: father Barnett McDougall, together with sons Charles C., Benjamin G. and George B., operated as McDougall and Sons during the last quarter of the 1800s and changed the name to McDougall Brothers upon Barnett’s retirement. After the 1906 earthquake, Benjamin G. McDougall began a separate, private architectural practice in San Francisco and designed many iconic buildings in San Francisco as well as the East Bay. Among his most prominent designs are the Oakland Federal Building in Oakland and the Standard Oil Building located in San Francisco at 200 Bush Street. Benjamin G. McDougall is also a well-known architect of the Bakersfield and Fresno areas, where the family operated during various times around the turn of the century.
