Pon Pon Chapel

South Carolina, Colleton County, Jacksonboro

Here on the old stage coach road connecting Charleston to Savannah, the Anglican Pon Pon Chapel of Ease served the Jacksonborough community for many years. The parish of St. Bartholomew's was established in 1706, however its first minister, the Reverend Nathaniel Osborne, did not arrive until 1713. An act of the General Assembly provided for a Chapel of Ease in 1725 and Vestry ordered a brick building to replace the wooden chapel.

During a visit in April 1737, John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church, preached twice at the chapel. (Picture included) Wesley wrote in his diary about how impressed he was to have had so many from so far to hear his gospel.

Unfortunately, this church was burned during the American Revolution. According to some records, it was rebuilt between 1819 and 1822, (Picture included) and was used until 1832 when it was again destroyed by fire. The site is often referred to today as "The Burnt Church." No effort was made to rebuild the chapel.

Family members continued to use the cemetery. Buried in the cemetery are O'Brien Smith and Aedanus Burke. Smith, the owner of Duharra Plantation, entertained George Washington in 1791 and both Smith and Burke served in the legislature.

( Photograph of Pon Pon Chapel ruins prior to stabilization)
The chapel and four acres were deeded to the Colleton Historical Society in 1970 to celebrate the Tricentennial of South Carolina. With additional interest, the Society received a grant from S.C. Archives and History in 1975 to repair the wall of the chapel which had been severely damaged by hurricane Gracie in 1959. The Society in cooperation with others holds various events on the site throughout the year.

The U.S. Navy Armed Guard
The division of the U.S. Navy that dealt with the protection of merchant vessels from attacks by submarines and aircraft was known as the Armed Guard.

The armament of the merchant vessels started with one gun in World War I, but was increased to 2 large guns (3”, 4”, or 5”) and 6 to 8 20 mm guns in World War II.

The Navy gun crew for a cargo ship consisted of a Commanding Officer, radiomen, signalmen and gunners. These selected men received intense thorough and demanding training.

The combination of armament and special well trained men stopped the attacks on merchant vessels. By the end of the World War II, the Armed Guard with a personnel of 144,970, was protecting over 6,236 ships. Losses due to enemy action were 1.810 men killed, 27 men were taken prisoner and 19,880 men survived 710 torpedoed ships. The Armed Guard was a major factor in the winning of World War II.

Medal of Honor
The Medal is the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. It is bestowed by the United States Congress on members of the United States Armed Forces who distinguish themselves through “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against any enemy of the United States, while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.”

This memorial pays tribute to Medal of Honor recipients who were either born in or whose award was accredited to the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said “We in America do not build monuments to war. We do not build monuments to conquest. We build monuments to commemorate the spirit of sacrifice in war—reminders of our desire for peace.” We hope that you will keep the spirit of these brave heroes alive by using this memorial as a place to reflect on the great sacrifices our brave soldiers have made on behalf of so many Americans. First Step to Freedom

On this site, August 29. 1839, federal investigative inquiry indicted 38 enslaved Mende Africans accused of revolt on the high seas and murder of the Captain and cook of the Spanish slave ship Amistad which was captured and brought into New London by U. S. Revenue Cutter Washington, Lt Gedney Commanding.

This first step to freedom revealed resources which ultimately through trials in Hartford and New Haven and an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court by former President John Quincy Adams won their liberty as persons to return home by missionary ship to Sierra Leone in 1841.

Thames River waves lapped against the white-striped loft black hull of Amistad for 14 months until it was refurbished and sold for salvage nearby at Joseph Lawrence’s dock. The cargo of silks, satins and other treasures were auctioned off at this Custom House on these front steps.

Amistad had unjustly held leader Joseph Cinque and his people as slaves in its hold before it became the vehicle for their passage to freedom. Never before, or since, has there been record of such freedom won!
