Kaminski House Museum

South Carolina, Georgetown County, Georgetown
Overlooking the Sampit River, the Kaminski House Museum is pre- Revolutionary War and one of over 60 antebellum landmarks in the Georgetown Historic District. The house was built by Paul Trapier, a prominent local merchant, concidered to be one of the wealthiest citizens of the colony. The house is typical of the "single house" construction of the period, and was constructed to catch the breezes off the river. The narrow end of the home faced the street with the entry way located midway down one side of the building.
Over the past 200 years, the house has been home to many interesting occupants, including three of the city's mayors. The house was purchased by Harold and Julia Kaminski in 1931. Mr. Kaminski served as mayor and was instrumental in developing both the Coastal Highway and the Inter-coastal Waterway. The Kaminskis furnished their home with antiques collected by Harold Kaminski's mother, Rose Baum Kaminski.

When Julia Kaminski died in 1972, she bequeathed the grounds, house, and its contents to the city of Georgetown with the hopes of it being established as a historic house museum. The museum is dedicated to the memory of her husband and his mother reflecting a unique insight into the construction and furnishings of a bygone period.

The bell was cast at the Revere Foundry in Canton and purchased by Joseph Revere in 1821. The tower was added three years later. The church was modernized in 1861 and restored in 1930. The Pedo Baptist (Child Baptizing) Congregational Society of Dighton was incorporated June 25th, 1798.

Anthony House and Ranch

California, Nevada County, Penn Valley
In 1849 a Mr. Anthony staked out 160 acres on the north side of Deer Creek on the road which would become part of the Marysville-Henness Pass-Virginia City trade route, and built a house and out-buildings. While further details about Mr. Anthony are unknown, the name Anthony House prevailed through a succession of owners. The property was up for sale in 1852 and purchased by Mr. S.P. French.

By that time it was a flourishing stage stop, serving as a hotel, restaurant, livery stable and post office. The original house burned down in 1876 but was quickly rebuilt. Subsequent owners included William Henry Davey, Nevada County Supervisor 1908 – 1916 and later his son, Frank Davey.

Stage stop and post office operations continued to 1906 when the post office was moved to Smartsville. Thereafter, declining traffic on the trade route led to farming and cattle raising as the main use of the property. By 1970 when Boise-Cascade began development of this area, the property had fallen into disrepair and the house was burned down as a training exercise by the Penn Valley Fire Protection District. Construction of Anthony Dam here on Deer Creek submerged any remains of this historic site under Lake Wildwood.

Marysville to Virginia City in 32 Hours

In 1859 the rich Comstock Silver Lode was discovered in Washoe Territory, Nevada, causing many miners to quickly pack up and head east. Immediately a company was formed to construct a road connecting this area of California to the Comstock finds. The Henness Pass Road was completed in 1861. A journalist described the road as “...a mixture of excellence and abominations.”

Thomas Freeman financed the Oregon Creek Covered Bridge in 1871 to replace a former one. The bridge was designed and hand-built by Hugh Thomas. It is over 100 feet long with a slight curve at either end. The marks of his adze are still visible on the bridge timbers.

In 1883, the English Dam located upstream on the Middle Yuba River gave way. Debris from the dam created a temporary dam downstream causing the level of Oregon Creek to rise. The resulting flood lifted the bridge and carried it 150 feet downstream. The bridge turned around in the flood and was replaced on its abutments backwards. It stand today as a model of craftsmanship and ingenuity.

You are standing on the Lagomarsino Ranch, part of the historic town of Loganville. From 1852 until the early part of the 20th century, the Keystone, Marguerite and Cleveland mines, located nearby, determined the fortunes of Loganville residents.

The town boasted a school, a public hall, a general store and a brickyard. Nearby ranches like this one, provided an abundance of hay, fruit and vegetables. This site was originally part of the Cavure Placer Claims, located in 1855. The ditch that was part of the original mining claim was used to irrigate this ranch.

Many signs of this homestead are still visible.

Hay was packed to Sierra City from Sierra Valley as early as 1852. Many of these pack trains used 50 to 75 animals. By the end of the decade, beef, butter, barley, oats, hogs and poultry products were being packed to west side.

In 1870, the Yuba Gap wagon road was opened. The first wagon over the summit belonged to Joseph Miller and carried butter and eggs. Originally a toll road, a horse and ride paid $1.50, cattle .50 each, sheep and hogs .25 each.

This high Sierra country was a perfect location for sheep herding. The Basque people from the Pyrennes Mountain of Spain used this area for herding flocks of sheep.
