A4D-2 (A-4B) Skyhawk

Massachusetts, Norfolk County, South Weymouth
On June 12, 1952, the U.S. Navy contracted with Douglas Aircraft Company to build one prototype XA4D-1 Skyhawk attack aircraft. Before delivery of the A4D to fleet units, an improved version, the A4D-2 was ordered into production. This Skyhawk (Bureau Number 142940) was flown from Naval Air Station South Weymouth by Marine and Navy Reserve Attack squadrons through much of the 1960’s. It was one of 542 of the “B” version (designations were changed in the 1960’s) to roll off the assembly line starting in 1956. A total of 2,960 of the many versions of the A4 were built.

This Skyhawk was accepted into service Nov. 25, 1958 and assigned to Marine Attack Squadron VMA 311, in El Toro, CA. Fleet Refurbishment, Quonset Point RI received the aircraft July 18, 1965, overhauled it, then assigned it to NAS South Weymouth Sept. 24, 1965 where it was based until Feb. 1, 1971. It was stricken from Navy inventory on April 30, 1971 and then assigned to the Naval Air Technical Training Center. In 1981, Captain Ray Demming (a former Reserve squadron Commanding Officer) arranged for the assignment and transport of 1429240 to NAS SoWey for use as a display aircraft. In August 1997 it took its place here in the Shea Field Memorial Grove.

The A4D-2 (A-4B) Skyhawk airframe is 38’ long with a wing span of only 27.5’, which obviated the need for the heavy and expensive wing fold system normally found in carrier based aircraft. Though empty weight was only 9,146 lbs.. its maximum takeoff weight was 22,500 lbs. Powered by a Wright J65 turbojet engine, its maximum level speed was 660 mph.

Pilots called the Skyhawk: Heinemann’s (the designer) Hot Rod”, “Scooter” and ”The Tinkertoy”. It enjoyed the longest production run of any tactical aircraft in the history of aviation, about 25 years! First flown in 1954, it was finally retired from U.S. Navy active service in 2003. Although early versions were designed to deliver carrier based nuclear weapons, the Skyhawk ultimately found primary use in close air support, interdiction and training, and is still in use in some foreign countries. Its contribution during the conflict in South Asia is well documented. Top Gun instructors flying later versions could beat any aircraft flown against them. The Blue Angels flew the Skyhawk for twelve years.

History of NAS South Weymouth

$
0
0
Massachusetts, Norfolk County, South Weymouth
Naval Air Station South Weymouth was a U.S. Navy installation from 1942 to 1997. It was established as a blimp base during the Second World War. Later, during the post-war era, NAS South Weymouth hosted a changing variety of regular Navy, Navy Reserve and Marine Corps Reserve units.

Originally, NAS South Weymouth had two enormous blimp hangers, one steel-framed and the other almost entirely made of wool. These hangers were among the largest structures in the world at that time.

On June 30th, 1949 NAS South Weymouth was closed and re-designated an auxiliary landing facility. The wooden blimp hanger was torn down and three paved runways were built between 1951 and 1953 so the base could take over the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve operations from nearby NAS Squantum, located in Quincy. NAS South Weymouth was reopened as part of the Naval Air Reserve Training Command on December 4th, 1953. All the Navy and Marine Corps reserve units that had been based at NAS Squantum were transferred to NAS South Weymouth. On October 14th, 1954 the name “Shea Field” was transferred from former NAS Squantum to the airfield at NAS South Weymouth to perpetuate the memory of Navy Commander John J. Shea, a local naval officer who was killed in action when the aircraft carrier USS Wasp was sunk off the Solomon Islands by a Japanese submarine on September 15th, 1942. NAS “SOWEY” was primarily a reserve training base after it was reopened, from December 1953 through September 1997. The Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC) of 1993 directed NAS South Weymouth to be closed. The airfield was closed on September 30th, 1996. The Base itself was vacated by the Navy on September 30th, 1997.

Designed as a "model home," this Queen Anne-style house was built for Irving Park land developer Charles N. Loucks. It is a fine example of "pattern book architecture,", building designs sold through the mail--a popular method used to keep pace with housing demands in the rapidly-growing railroad suburbs of the time. The house is noteworthy for its colored beveled-glass windows, verandah with beaded spindle-work, applied metal ornament and its distinctive turret.

An eagle flies and a solemn flag waves
Look up to the sky and not down to our graves.
Remember what has been done and everything given
In everything you do and the life you are livin'.
I served my country on bended knee.
Wyandotte don't cry for me.

I gave my life of my free choice
To stand for those who had no voice.
I stood by my brothers hand in hand
To bring justice to a foreign land.
Willingly traveled over land and sea.
Michigan don't cry for me.

I am an American soldier, a Vietnam Vet.
I gave my life for all, so you may owe no debt.
I died for the home of the brave and the land of the free
America don't cry for me.

Hubbard House

Minnesota, Blue Earth County, Mankato
Rensselaer Dean Hubbard, successful entrepreneur and civic leader, built his house on Broad Street in three stages: in 1871, 1888 and 1905. During the late 19th century, many of Mankato’s captains of industry and commerce established their residences along Third Street (renamed Broad Street). This neighborhood became known as the “Silk Stocking District.” Hubbard’s home was constructed in the French second empire style featuring a mansard roof, brick and wood construction, and a cut stone basement. It contained several modern conveniences of the time – telephone, indoor plumbing and electricity.

In 1879, Hubbard established the Hubbard Milling Company, the largest flourmill in southern Minnesota. He died on a Chicago business trip in 1905.

The Hubbard family continued to live in the home until their daughter, Mary Esther, sold it to the Blue Earth County Historical Society in 1938. The City of Mankato assumed the deed under an agreement to maintain it as a historic house museum. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The Wright Cycle Shop is considered the "birthplace of aviation." this is the original building where the Wright Flyer was made.

Besides their bicycle business, Wilbur and Orville Wright did much of the hands-on work on their airplane here.

The Wright brothers earned a steady income from building, selling and repairing bicycles at this Dayton, Ohio shop. They used much of that money to pay for their aviation experiments. Their experience building bicycles helped them unlock the mysteries of how airplanes fly.

Built about 1875 in Dayton, Ohio.

Wisconsin, Columbia County, Cambria
On this site in 1844, John Langdon & his four sons erected a sawmill, a dam & gristmill. Other early settlers by the names of McConochie, Dodge, Torbert, & Williams joined in construction. The original place name of Langdon's Mill, later became Florence, Belleville and finally Cambria.

The name Cambria is derived from the Welsh word Cymrie (meaning Wales) in honor of early settlement of the area by Welsh immigrants. The first group of Welsh people to come to this area left Liverpool, England on July 17, 1845. They were Robert Closs, David R. Jones, John R. Rowlands, Evan Edwards, Jabes Lloyd, E.B. Williams & John Edwards.

Cambria was the "Center" of the Welsh settlers in Columbia, Dodge & Green Lake Counties. The communities of Blaen-y-cae, Lake Emily, Proscairon, Rockhill, Portage Prairie & Welsh Prairie were established around Cambria.
