Point Pinos Lighthouse Oil House

$

California, Monterey County, Pacific Grove
“The Oil House” ***************************** The structure you see before you is a fuel storage house commonly referred to as an ‘oil house’. This oil house was constructed in 1899.

In the 1880’s, before the conversion to electricity in 1919, the lighthouse signal lanterns were lighted by burning very volatile fuels such as kerosene. The high volatility caused several accidents and eventually forced the Lighthouse Board to build fuel storage houses away from the lighthouses and the keeper’s living quarters. (Note the heavy iron door that was additional protection in the event of an explosion)

Our Point Pinos oil house is now being utilized as a workshop by the lighthouse restoration team.

The anchor on display here is from the coastal steamer Gipsy sunk off what is now known as Cannery Row on September 27, 1905. At night a substitute Captain mistook a red construction warning lantern at the foot of Hoffman Ave. in New Monterey for the lantern at the end of the steamer wharf in Monterey harbor. The Gipsy ran aground.

This is a burial complex from the Second Temple period. The facade of the cave features the relief of a gable resembling the roof facade of a sacred building. The decorative style is drawn from Hellenistic art, which influenced Jewish burial architecture at the end of the Second Temple period. The complex contains a number of burial niches; the identity of those interred here is not known. The cave's name comes from the identification of this part of the Kidron Valley as the biblical Valley of Jehoshaphat.

The first national strike began July 16, 1877, with Baltimore and Ohio Railroad workers in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and Baltimore Maryland. It spread across the nation halting rail traffic and closing factories in reaction to widespread worker discontent over wage cuts and conditions during a national depression. Broken by Federal troops in early August, the strike energized the labor movement and was precursor to labor unrest in the 1880s and 1890s.

On to Yorktown

Maryland, Baltimore
Our nation never had more at risk than it did in September 1781. The American Revolutionary War—the War for independence—had raged for nearly six years. More than 4,000 American and French troops, allied in their fight against the British, had marched from New York and inundated Baltimore for four days before advancing toward Yorktown, Virginia. At that time, Baltimore was a city of less than 10,000 residents. One regiment, the Soissonnais of French forces, was encamped at this site. Across the harbor to the east, the Royal Deux-Points, a German regiment under France, camped along Harford Run (Central Avenue) in Jonestown. Others were situated along the Jones Falls, or what is not North Charles Street. The French Cavalry, artillery, and baggage train camped just to the north of Market, now Baltimore Street between Paca and Howard Streets. A brigade of American troops rested at Fells Point. Three Baltimore Town landmarks, St Paul’s Church (top), Fite’s Tavern (upper left) and the City Courthouse (upper right) are also featured in this scene. Two days after hearing how a French naval fleet overcame the British at the Battle off the Capes in Virginia, the allied forces departed from Baltimore on September 15.

The defeat of British forces at the Battle of Yorktown in October was pivotal. On October 19, 1781, British commander Lord Charles Cornwallis surrendered his army to General George Washington. Within two years, the Treaty of Paris ended the War. America had emerged with its independence.

Mortar holes and rock paintings mark this as one time Indian habitation. Gold and silver prospectors found the spring flowing as late as the 1920s. One of them, Gus Lederer, gave up roving and became known as "Mayor of Corn Springs." He lived in a cabin, grew vegetables, left the area clear of litter and assisted travelers.

Absalom's Tomb

Israel, Jerusalem District, Jerusalem
This splendid burial monument dates to the end of the Second temple period. The lower part of the monument is hewn and the upper part is constructed. The name derives from the biblical verse that tells of Absalom's construction of a monument for himself during his lifetime, which he called Absalom's Monument. However, there is no connection between the Bible story and the structure you see here, which was built 1,000 years later. The style in which it was hewn combines varied architectural traditions typical of Jewish art at the end of the Second Temple period. The interior of the monument is hallow; it contains a staircase and a burial niche.
