Site of Simoneau’s Restaurant

California, Monterey County, Monterey
This plaza was once occupied by the restaurant of Jules Simoneau. In late 1879 young Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, the almost unknown, ate his meals hear nearly every day. He was staying in a small room at the nearby rooming house known as the French Hotel. Stevenson and Simoneau spent much time together, playing chess and talking philosophically “upon all things divine and human.”

Although Stevenson left Monterey after four months, never to return, he and Simoneau remained friends throughout Stevenson’s years of fame as the author of many literary classics, including Treasure Island, A Child’s Garden of Verses and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. While in Monterey, Stevenson wrote Pavilion on the Links, the greater part of The Amateur Immigrant and several other works. After leaving Monterey, Stevenson wrote The Old Pacific Capital, an essay about Monterey and vicinity. The rooming house where Stevenson stayed is now known as the Stevenson House and is open to the public.

“In my little restaurant at Monterey, we have sat down to table, day after day, a Frenchman, two Portuguese, an Italian, a Mexican, and a Scotsman: we had for common visitor’s an American from Illinois, a nearly pure-blood Indian woman, and a naturalised Chinese; and from time to time a Switzer and a German came down from country ranches for the night.”
From The Old Pacific Capital, 1880

“Out of all my private recollections of remembered inns and restaurants... one particular house of entertainment stands forth alone... Simoneau’s at Monterey.”
from Simoneau’s at Monterey, 1880.

“I am very sure... I shall never find another landlord like my papa Simoneau. I was the spoiled child of the house; when my appetite failed, he broke his heart to find me dainties; if there was anything delicate in Monterey, papa Simoneau was sure to have some of it laid by for his favorite boarder. And then the talks that we had... the studies that we made in chess... the long pleasant evenings by the stove!”
from Simoneau’s at Monterey, 1880

“I shall never forget the good times we had together, the many long talks, the games of chess, the flute on occasion and the excellent food.”
from Stevenson letter to Simoneau, late 1883.

Installed in the year 2000, in Commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of Robert Louis Stevenson’s birth. Through the courtesy of the Robert Louis Stevenson Club of Monterey and the City of Monterey.

Roosevelt Campobello International Park

New Brunswick, Charlotte County, near Welshpool

The Roosevelt Campobello International Park is a unique example of international cooperation - jointly administered, staffed, and funded by the peoples of Canada and the United States. Established by international treaty in 1964, the 1,134-hectare (2800-acre) park remains a symbol of the close relationship between our two countries. When she declared the Park Visitor Center open in 1967, the Queen Mother Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth expressed the sentiments of both countries with these words: It is most fitting that the memory of so gallant and illustrious an American should be honored on the Canadian Island which he loved.

In June 1933, after completing his history-making first "Hundred Days" in office, FDR and three of his sons sailed from Marion, Massachusetts to Campobello aboard the 13.7-metre (45-foot) schooner Amberjack II (photo 1). They were met for a picnic on the shore (photo 2) by Eleanor Roosevelt and various dignitaries including the officers of the USS Indianapolis, anchored in Canadian waters off Welshpool. The visit lasted three days and two nights. During his visit, FDR made the following remarks:

I was thinking also, as I came through the Narrows and saw the line of fishing boats and the people on the wharfts, both here at Welch Pool [sic.] and also in Eastport, that this reception here is probably the finest example of friendship between nations - permanent friendship between nations - that we can possibly have.

Bandy Music Hall

Music has always been an important part of the ministry of Toccoa Falls College. However, in 1958, this fact was in jeopardy as the school was faced with the possibility of losing its music department. Fire destroyed Ring Music Hall, and school administrators rushed to find ways to keep the program going. Dr. and Mrs. Forrest were adamant: somehow the music department would remain and continue to grow. Music was a daily part of their lives and they keenly understood the importance of praise and worship. Therefore, faculty and staff were relentless in prayer asking God the music facility.

Plans were drawn up and included a larger facility that would be used for the recently approved B.S. major in sacred music. Before his death in 1958, Dr. Forrest walked over the proposed site for the new music building and dedicated it to God. He believed the lord would supply the money needed for reconstruction. The estimated cost of the new music building was fifty thousand dollars. When thirty thousand was raised construction began. By the time the building was completed in 1960, Dr. and Mrs. Forrest had died, but the sound of worship and praise on the campus of Toccoa Falls continued.

The new administration, led by Dr. Julian Bandy, had the privilege of dedicating a new debt-free facility. Later, the music building was named in honor of Mrs. Eunice (Bascom) Bandy. She was a part-time music teacher and the beloved wife of Dr. Bandy, the second president of Toccoa Falls Institute.

This historical marker is placed in honor of the Centennial Celebration 1907-2007. Donated by alumni from classes 1936-1976.

Mulholland Point / La Pointe Mulholland

New Brunswick, Charlotte County, near Welshpool

Built in 1885, the Mulholland Point Lighthouse (photo 1) served as a guide for the many small coasters and freighters taking the shorter and more foul weather-protected route through the Lubec Narrows. Steamships, such as the Penobscot (photo 2), sailing between Boston, Portland, and Eastport in the 1890s could only travel through the Narrows when the tide was high. Otherwise, they had to steam around the eastern side of Campobello.

The first automobiles brought to the island during Campobello's Summer Colony era often came across from Eastport on the old inter-island steam ferry. As automobile traffic became more popular, various attempts were made to establish a more formal vehicle ferry crossing (photo 3) at the Narrows between Lubec and Campobello. Ferries carrying up to six automobiles operated at various times, but travel often depended upon the tides and fog.

While Governor of New York and later as President, FDR had often shown an interest in bridges, especially bridges between the United States and Canada. Construction of the "Roosevelt Memorial Bridge" began in January of 1960. Costs were shared equally by Canada and the United States. Formal opening of the bridge took place on August 13, 1962.

Navigation lights on the bridge rendered the Mulholland Point Lighthouse obsolete and the Canadian Coast Guard decommissioned the light in 1963. It was sold to a local resident who later sold it to the Look family of Washington County, Maine. In 1984, the Look brothers donated the Mulholland Point Lighthouse to the Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission.

Visitors to the Mulholland Point picnic area (photo 4) enjoy views of the FDR Memorial Bridge, Lubec, Maine, the Channel Lighthouse, and the islands and waters of Johnson's Bay. Visitors often see harbor seals there, too.

The lighthouse is not open to the public. Other lighthouses in the area include East Quoddy Light on the northern end of Campobello, the Channel Light, south of the international bridge, and West Quoddy Head Light in South Lubec, Maine.
————————

California, City and County of San Francisco, San Francisco
Huntington Park On this site in 1872, General David D. Colton, a railroad attorney, built one of the most elaborate residences ever seen in San Francisco. The classic white wooden mansion featured an entry flight of marble steps leading to a portico of Corinthian columns. General Colton, his wife, and his two daughters entertained in the mansion with style and splendor. General Colton died in 1878 and shortly thereafter his widow, Ellen, closed the mansion and moved to Washington, D.C.

In 1892, railroad baron Collis P. Huntington purchased the house where he lived with his wife, Arabella, until the time of his death in 1900. Mrs. Huntington occupied the grand mansion until its destruction in the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906. In 1915, Mrs. Huntington donated the land to the City of San Francisco to remain as a park in perpetuity for all the people of the city to enjoy.

Beginning in the late 1970s, the park became a continuing restoration and preservation project of the Nob Hill Association, San Francisco’s oldest neighborhood organization, in cooperation with the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department.

"Fountain of the Tortoises" The magnificent Roman "Fountain of the Tortoises" is the centerpiece of Huntington Park.

The original Fontana della Tartarughe is still functioning in Piazza Mattei, Rome, Italy. In the early 1900s , a company in Rome offered exact replicas of the original fountain, and William H. and Ethel Crocker purchased one of the reproductions and had it installed at their estate in Hillsborough, California. The four Crocker Children donated the fountain to the City of San Francisco in 1954. It was placed in Huntington Park across the street from the site of the original Crocker Mansion, now occupied by Grace Cathedral.

Before the Collapse

Oregon, Klamath County, Crater Lake
When Mt. Mazama collapsed about 6,800 years ago, it left behind evidences of its former self. Like X-ray photos the steep caldera walls reveal the interior of Mt. Mazama before its fall. From this point several pre-collapse volcanic features can be identified.

The massive gray monolith on the rim ahead is Llao Rock. It formed when a large outpouring of lava filled an explosion crater on the north slope of Mt. Mazama. When Mt. Mazama collapsed, part of the hardened lava flow broke off and fell into the caldera, leaving the downslope portion perched on the rim.

The jagged, colorful spires of Hillman Peak in the foreground are the remains of a secondary volcano which erupted on the side of Mt. Mazama. This satellite cone attained a height of 1,000 feet (300m). Erosion here has exposed a maze of clogged and solidified lava conduits that fed the Hillman volcano.

After the Collapse

Oregon, Klamath County, Crater Lake
About 6,800 years ago, at the climax of a series of dramatic eruptions, the top of Mt. Mazama collapsed. Left behind was the huge crater, or caldera, you see today. But before the caldera filled with water, there were more eruptions.

The most striking evidence of post collapse volcanic activity is Wizard Island, the small volcano in front of you. Its symmetrical cone was formed by a fountain of cinders which erupted from the caldera floor. On the left side of the caldera, a similar cone appeared, but today it lies hidden 496 feet (151 m) below the lake surface.

Geologists believe that lava flows which erupted after the collapse helped to seal the fractured caldera floor, allowing melting snow and rain to accumulate.

The Applegate Trail

Oregon, Josephine County, near Wolf Creek
In 1846, Jesse Applegate and fourteen others from near Dallas, Oregon, established a trail south from the Williamette Valley and east to Fort Hall. This route offered emigrants an alternative to the perilous “last leg” of the Oregon Trail down the treacherous Columbia River.

The first emigrants to trek the new “Southern Road” left with the trailblazers from Fort Hall in early August 1846. With Levi Scott acting as a guide, while Jesse Applegate traveled ahead to mark the route, the hardy emigrants blazed a wagon trail through nearly 500 miles of wilderness arriving in the upper Williamette Valley in November. Emigrant travel continued along the Applegate Trail in later years and contributed greatly to the settlement of southern Oregon and the Williamette Valley.
No Time to Mourn Hardship was common fare for the Applegate Trail emigrants — privation, illness and death were constant companions. Travelers eager to reach the settlements before winter had little time to mourn - funerals were short with graves often shallow and unmarked. Martha Leland Crowley’s grave near the north bank of this creek is no exception.

There were 15 in the family I was with — The Crowleys. Eight of them died before reaching Oregon… The last of the family to die on the trip was Martha Leland Crowley, who died near what used to be called Grave Creek… I was a carpenter and made coffins for the members of our party who died. We had no boards left when Martha died, but I knocked some boxes to pieces and made her a coffin. We buried her by the stream and then corralled the cattle over the grave as the Indians would not find her body and dig it up.

“Peaceable if you can, forcibly if you must,” ordered Indian Agent T. B. Odeneal. The U.S. Army garrison’s task was to bring the Modocs and their leader, Captain Jack, back to the reservation. His refusal started the Modoc War in the fall of 1872.

In early December about 60 Modoc warriors retreated with their families to the lava formations just south of here. The jagged landscape formed a natural fortress where the Modocs withstood two major army assaults. But after the army severed their access to water at Tule Lake, the Modocs were forced from their position in April 1873. The area has since been called Captain Jacks Stronghold.
