Bandy Cottage Alumni House

Georgia, Stephens County, Toccoa

In the early 1920's, Jack Mathes moved to Toccoa Falls and accepted the position as business manager of the institution. He met and married Susie Ralls, one of the young women who lived with the Forrests. In 1924, Susie and Jack built a home on the old Hancock Inn site. College officials believe this home is one of the original Sears and Roebuck catalog homes. When the Matheses moved to Florida in 1932 to assist Bill Watson at Trinity Bible Institute, their home was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. William Martin and became known as the Martin house.

In the early 1940's, fire threatened to destroy this structure but quick thinking by Kelly Barnes, who organized and supervised a "bucket brigade" from nearby Toccoa Creek, extinguished the flames saving the structure. When Kelly Barnes saw one of the institute's boys standing by watching the fire, he yelled for the lad to get a bucket and help. When the boy replied he did not have a bucket, Kelly uttered the memorable words, "Well, make a bucket." The Mathes house later became the residence of the second college president, Dr. Julius Brandy and his wife Eunice, who taught music at the college. By the mid 1990's this building was converted into offices for Alumni Relations and Advancement.

This historical marker is placed in honor of the Centennial Celebration, 1907-2007. Donated by the former presidents of the Toccoa Falls Alumni Association.

South Carolina, Barnwell County, Barnwell

This high bluff was called
Red Hill in the colonial
era. It overlooks Turkey
Creek, which flows into the
Great Salkehatchie River.
The Charleston-to-Augusta
road, along an old Indian
trail, crossed the creek
nearby. The waters of
Turkey Creek and White Oak
Springs, just north of this
site, were incentives for
the early settlement and
development of what would
later become Barnwell.

McHeath's Tavern, the first
business in what became
Barnwell, was built nearby
before the Revolution. The
town, a county seat since
1785 when Winton District
(later Barnwell District,
and then Barnwell County)
was created, was long
called Barnwell Court
House. Two cemeteries a
short distance east, both
established about 1800,
include the graves of some
of Barnwell's earliest
families.

Lansky Brothers

Tennessee, Shelby County, Memphis
Lansky Brothers was founded in 1946 by Bernard and Guy Lansky with a $125 investment from their father, S. L. Lansky. The store began at 126 Beale Street as an army surplus store, but gradually changed to accommodate customers interested in a one-of-a-kind look. At the time, Beale Street was the center of the African-American social and music scene in Memphis. Bernard traveled the country looking for unique product. Sometimes outrageous, always years ahead of anything else in town, many of the items were made of bright, vivid colors and silky fabrics. Lansky Brothers quickly became the fashion headquarters to musicians and the clothes savvy, including B.B. King, Isaac Hayes, David Porter, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Rufus Thomas. (Continued on other side)

(Continued from other side)
It was Elvis Presley who helped establish Bernard Lansky’s “Clothier to the King” title and allowed for global recognition. Bernard recalls looking up one day and seeing a young man looking at his windows. He walked up to greet him and told him, “Come on in and let me show you around.” The young man said “I don’t have any money, Mr. Lansky, but when I get rich, I’m going to buy you out.” Bernard told him “Don’t buy me out. Just buy from me!” Lansky outfitted Elvis for his performances on the Ed Sullivan Show, Dorsey Brothers Show and the Louisiana Hayride. Bernard dressed Elvis in the Pink/Black combination, which defined the cool colors of the '50s era. The Lansky family has cultivated a legacy that is three generations now, and is still operating clothing stores in the lobby of the historic Peabody Hotel.

The Old Whaling Station

$

California, Monterey County, Monterey
This old adobe was originally built in 1847 by David Wight as a home for his family. The floor plan is reported to be based on Wight’s ancestral home in Scotland. The Wights lived in the house only a short time before leaving for the gold fields in 1850.

Portuguese whalers, working for the Old Monterey Whaling Company, began shore whaling operations here in 1855. The building served as company headquarters and employee residence. Whales were spotted from the second floor windows, and the hunt began. The whale blubber was rendered on the beach in huge iron pots like the one you can see in the back garden.

In 1864 the Monterey Gazette reported that pieces of whalebones, which were “plentiful on the beach,” were cut and trimmed as paving blocks for “neat and pretty sidewalks” in front of Monterey stores.

The Old Whaling Station has one of the nation’s last remaining whalebone sidewalks.

Today the Junior League of Monterey leases this historic site from California State Parks. The adobe and its gardens are used for weddings and other special events.
