Pittsylvania

Virginia, Prince William County, near Manassas
The foundation stones in front of you are all that remain of a once grand estate known as Pittsylvania. Landon Carter, Jr., grandson of Robert “King” Carter, built Pittsylvania around 1765. The Georgian-style frame house stood on a prominent knoll, surrounded by gardens, outbuildings, and slave quarters. It enjoyed a commanding view of the entire countryside.

By the outbreak of the Civil War, however, Pittsylvania was in serious decline. Financial troubles and division of the estate had reduced the plantation to 283 acres. Many of its structures stood in ruin. The main house, like many neighboring buildings, served as a field hospital after the battles of Manassas.

One eyewitness recalled: “A large part of the old mansion had been unoccupied for some years and was out of repair. There in huge old rooms with that English wall paper hanging in strips and fallen plaster swept into corners, the wounded were lying – some in great carven four-poster beds, some on pallets and on the floor…” One of Carter’s seven children, daughter Judith, was killed on Henry Hill as a bedridden widow during the First Battle of Manassas. Although Pittsylvania survived both battles, the house burned in the autumn of 1862.

Port Washington Civil War Draft Riot

Wisconsin, Ozaukee County, Port Washington
(Side One):
During the Civil War, Wisconsin Governor Edward Salomon postponed the draft several times but finally gave authorization for several counties to hold lotteries. In Ozaukee County, Draft Commissioner William A. Pors set Monday, November 10, 1862, for the draft lottery. As he approached the courthouse in Port Washington, formerly located on this site, he was greeted by hundreds of angry onlookers chanting, "No draft! No draft!" The unruly crowd included many immigrants who opposed the war, the draft, and compulsory military service. As he attempted to begin, some of the protesters rushed forward, and a full-blown riot was underway - the first major draft disturbance of the Civil War. Pors was pushed down the courthouse stairs, pummeled, kicked, pelted with rocks, and chased. He fled for his life to Milwaukee, where he telegraphed the governor for assistance.

(Side Two):
The mob destroyed draft materials, paraded in the streets under a "No Draft" banner, and vandalized the homes of Pors and several other prominent citizens. The protest ended two days later when companies of the 28th Wisconsin arrived from Milwaukee to restore the peace. The soldiers arrested more than 130 people, who were first held at Camp Washburn in Milwaukee and then moved to Camp Randall in Madison. No charges were filed, and all were released over the next few months. The Ozaukee County draft resumed on November 14 under the watchful eyes of soldiers. It was completed without incident. Despite the draft riot, Ozaukee County had an outstanding Civil War record.

Old Runnymede

Kansas, Harper County, near Harper

Two miles northeast of here, in 1890, stood a typical English village. Curving driveways led to English-style houses set among rows of clipped hedges. Nearby were polo grounds, a steeplechase course, a race track, tennis courts, and a football field. Red-coated hunters rode to hounds across the buffalo grass prairie. Farms and orchards were modeled after English estates and on the townsite a three-story hotel and other businesses were established. The promoter of all this British activity was an Irishman who persuaded wealthy families to send sons to the colony to learn American farming methods. In practice, Runnymede strongly resembled a modern dude ranch. Although at one time, a hundred young Englishmen lived in the settlement, a number of whom owned estates, it was a failure as a colony. When hard times came old Runnymede collapsed and most of its remittance men returned to England. Today wheat fields cover the townsite.

Trinity Church

New Jersey, Middlesex County, Woodbridge

Not long after Woodbridge Township was founded in 1669, the Independent Meeting House was built nearby for nondenominational services. Records show that Anglican services were first held there in 1698. In 1710, it was announced that the Independent Meeting House would become a Presbyterian Church. Those who wished to maintain the Anglican form of worship left in protest, and decided to erect their own building at the present location of Trinity Church. Until it was completed in 1713, the home of Benjamin Dunham was used for Anglican services. At about the same time, Trinity Churchyard was first used as a burial place for the parish.

In 1756, a second building was constructed on the site, replacing the 1713 structure. One hundred and two years later, in 1858, a defective woodstove set fire to the wooden clapboard church and it burned to the ground. It was replaced by a more spacious brick building, and in 1861, the present church structure was consecrated. In 1872, the former home of Benjamin Dunham was purchased to serve as the Trinity Rectory (constructed in 1670 by Jonathan Dunham, who owned the first grist mill in New Jersey, located near to this site). Enlarged and modernized in 1872, the historic fabric of the Dunham house exterior remains.

This Historic Marker is a gift to the people of Woodbridge from the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, 2009.

Old Runnymede Church

Kansas, Harper County, Harper

This is the church that once stood in Runnymede, an English village, nine and one half miles northeast of Harper. The church was first dedicated as St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in 1889, but was rededicated in 1893, when the Episcopalians of Harper purchased the frame building and moved it to its present location at llth and Pine Streets.

Runnymede was established by an Irish promoter who persuaded wealthy English and Irish families to send their sons to America to study farming. During a period of five years, this community flourished, then withered and died from the lack of a railroad, leaving us with a solitary grave in a lonely field and to the people of Harper, this church.

The fountain was originally located on this site and presented to the City of Harper in the year 1909 by the Study and Social Club, under the direction of club president Mary Coulson and club founder and teacher, Josephine Weatherly, at a cost of $375.00.

Accepted on behalf of the city by then Mayor M. S. Shephard, the fountain replaced the town water pump and served as a watering station for man and animal for a period of 60 years before being replaced by a more modern structure in 1969.

In 1983, the fountain was restored and replaced on this original site through the direction of Brian Ede and combined efforts of the Harper Chamber of Commerce, Inc. with monetary contributions by many former and present area citizens, and is hereby dedicated with respect to the Citizens of Harper past, present, and future.

This fountain was accepted on behalf of the city by Mayor Hubert Johnson.

Grace Episcopal Church Building

California, Santa Cruz County, Boulder Creek
The building stands in the original town of Lorenzo, laid out by sawmill owner Joseph Peery, who included a “no whiskey” clause in each lot’s deed. In 1885 Boulder Creek was chosen for the terminus of the railroad from Felton, and after a fire devastated Lorenzo in 1897. Boulder Creek prevailed. During aggressive clashes over restricting liquor, gambling and prostitution, Peery’s mill was torched, as were the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches, hence this building is the oldest surviving building in Boulder Creek. Grace Mission was established in May 1905 and this land was purchased. Arthur Darwall, who conducted services, and his son, are credited with the building construction. Opening services, November 1906, were held by Archdeacon Emery of Grace Cathedral, San Francisco. When congregation numbers dwindled, Boulder Creek and Ben Lomond parishes were consolidated and Grace Episcopal closed. The building lay unused for several years until purchased in 1923 by the Christian Science Society. Isaiah Hartman loaned over half of the $1000 required. In 1955 the Society attained church status and the name was officially changed to First Church of Christ Scientist, Boulder Creek and in 1978, the Church was officially dedicated. In 1995, the property was sold to the Boulder Creek Historical Society to house the San Lorenzo Valley Museum’s collections. It opened to the community in 1999. Erected August 20, 2011 (6016 A.S.)
