Texas, Jones County, Stamford
Swedish native Swante Magnus Swenson and his two sons, Eric Pierson and Swen Albin Swenson, came to Texas in 1882 to establish the SMS ranches. In 1899, Eric P. and Swen A. Swenson donated a large section of land for a townsite on an extension of the Texas Central Railway. Railway president Henry McHarg named the new town Stamford for his hometown in Connecticut. A Cumberland Presbyterian church was organized in members' homes and a post office was established in a railroad boxcar in 1899. The Bank of Stamford opened for business in January 1900 and the first train pulled out of the Stamford depot in February. Businesses, churches and utilities soon were established.
The booming town was incorporated in January 1901 and P.P. Berthelot became the first mayor. Stamford relied primarily on agriculture for its economy. Cotton, Swenson's Herefords and other area livestock brought substantial income. The town also boasted a flour mill, cottonseed oil plant, iron foundry, gins, brick manufacturers and a railroad roundhouse. Both passenger and freight trains brought business to town. Stamford Collegiate Institution (later Stamford College), a Methodist school, opened in 1907. Oil was discovered near Stamford in 1935 and broadened the town's economic base still further. U.S. Army pilots trained at nearby Arledge Field during World War II.
The town of Stamford thrived throughout the 20th century. Though the Burlington Northern Railroad (final proprietor of the railway through Stamford) abandoned the track in the late 1990s, the Swenson Land and Cattle Company remained in operation, and cotton, cattle and wheat continued to be among Stamford's leading industries at the dawn of the 21st century.

Organized on February 22, 1900, soon after the founding of Stamford, this church has been an integral part of the community since that time. Initially meeting in a shed on present Oliver Street and then in a building on the town square, the congregation had this Classical Revival structure built in 1908-09 during the pastorate of the Rev. Frank S. Groner. Outstanding features of the building include pedimented wings at three sides, a central dome, and art glass windows.

Texas, Jones County, Stamford
Businessman Swen (Svante) Magnus Swenson (1816-1896), first Swedish settler in Texas, is closely associated with Sam Houston and his effort to keep Texas in the Union prior to the Civil War. In 1854 Swenson purchased large land tracts here which he greatly expanded by the mid-1880s with school tracts and railroad scrips.
As a result of new state taxes on land Swenson leased his west Texas land to his sons Eric Pierson and Swen Albin in 1882. Eric and Swen formed the Swenson Brothers partnership and by 1885 their ranching operations consisted of 1800 Shorthorn and 180 Indiana pure crossbred Hereford-Shorthorn cows bearing a distinctive reversed (SMS) cattle brand still in use today.
Initially comprised of the Flat Top, Ericksdahl, and Throckmorton Ranches, the Swenson Family holdings were expanded to include the Tongue River Ranch in 1900 and the Spur Ranch in 1906, making it one of the largest ranches in Texas with over 500,000 acres.
Swenson Land & Cattle Co., incorporated in 1926, established its headquarters here in 1927. It is noted for its introduction of an innovative mail-order system for selling cattle, brush management programs, and integrated ranching operations. The ranch was divided into four separate family-owned corporations in 1978. Sesquicentennial of Texas Statehood   1845-1995

Volcanos Fuego and Acatenango

English:
Volcano FuegoThe Volcano Fuego, to the left in the photograph, is part of the Volcanic Chain of Guatemala’s Quaternary Period, which completely traverses the country parallel to the Pacific coast. It is approximately 8500 years old and is catalogued as one of the most active in the world, because it is known this volcano has had at least 60 eruptions in historic times.
The Fuego is located to the south of the Acatenango volcano and is 45 kilometers from Guatemala City, as the crow flies. Its geographical position is given by the coordinates: Lat. 14°28.9’N; long. 90°52.9’W and it has an altitude of 3,763 meters over sea level.
Because of its shape and structure, it is classified as a stratovolcano or compound cone. That is, formed of alternate layers of scoria and lava. Only one crater is known, located at the top. It has a conical shape with very steep slopes that descend evenly towards the base, with the exception of the northern side, where it is cut by an old structure commonly known as “La Meseta”.
It constitutes the most recent eruptive center of a volcanic complex that has a north-south orientation and began forming 84,000 to 43,000 years ago. It is covered by thick vegetation on all its sides, up to about 3,000 meters. Above that, vegetation has been removed by erosion or volcanic activity.
Before 1932, the top had the shape of a peak but, during that year’s eruption, the top collapsed, decreasing almost 80 meters in height and forming a wide crater with a dented and pointed crest on the northeastern side, where a breccia was formed allowing lava from later eruptions to flow.
On different occasions the crater has been periodically filled and emptied, as lava is produced. The most recent filling of the crater happened between January and March of 2002, coinciding with an increase in activity. As of February 2002, the lava began to overflow towards the eastern side of the crater and in August of that year it started to overflow towards the southeastern side.

Volcano AcatenangoThe Volcano Acatenango, to the right in the photograph, at present is active, even though its last eruption was in 1972. In 1981 the geologists climbed all the way to the top and reported a strong sulfuric smell, but without visible fumaroles.
Because of the type of its eruptions, the Acatenango Volcano is classified as a stratovolcano, with an elevation of 3,976 meters over sea level.
There is a legend telling that people who lived in the Acatenango village saw a spirit walking near the volcano. One day a group of persons teased the spirit and they were never seen again; a few days later, the volcano erupted.

Veterans Wall of Honor

Founder’s Statement
All Who Serve Sacrifice
Some Who Serve Sacrifice All

Welcome to the Veterans Wall of Honor, honoring all veterans of our Armed Forces who have served in peace and war since the Revolutionary War. In the spring of 2001 Leonard Eisert, one of the founding Directors, presented the idea for a monument to a group of six (6) interested veterans. Out of that meeting was formed the Veterans Council. The Veterans Council of Northwest Arkansas was incorporated in the State of Arkansas in 2001 and is a tax exempt 501(c)3 organization. The Council broke ground on October 1, 2003 and dedicated this impressive structure on November 6, 2004 before a huge crowd headed by the late Lt. Governor Winthrop Rockefeller.

A visitor, after passing under the massive arch, will note the 36-foot time line, displaying major military events from 1776 to 2006. On the walls to the right and left rear, one finds 63 bronze historical plaques summarizing events displayed on the time line. The monument is circled by 18 historical flags. As the visitor proceeds inside, he sees the beautiful fountain and is amazed by the 4,167 incised veterans’ tablets mounted on the 24 walls. One of the major objectives of the Veterans Council is to inform school groups and the general public of the contributions made by our veterans to secure our nation’s freedoms. The Council is also a partner in the Veteran’s History Project sponsored by the Folklife Center in the Library of Congress.

Architect’s Statement
The architectural process enables man’s primal need to create forms that outlive us. Forms that reflect and honor the human purpose and celebrate the constant renewal of our existence.

This monument employs the circular enclosure as the form that historically has offered safe keeping for those contained within and currently for those honored here.

The introduction to this monument is through an entrance arch where the visitor is directed toward three concentric circular walls. Walls disposed to reveal in sequence: a time line of military events from the country’s inception to the present, a graphic elaboration of those events, and a graphic review of military symbols and inceptive statements.

Granite tablets containing engraved names and service reference of these veterans are mounted on the inner face of all circular walls. Focus of the tableau is directed to the central gathering area where visitors can reflect on the service and sacrifices made throughout our military history. The visitor-observer then becomes the observed by that focus, becomes one with those honored and accepts their dedication as his own.

A bubbling fountain at the center of the gathering area suggests a constant vigil preserving and protecting the process and spirit of our free society…

Founded in 1928, the Abilene Woman's Club had several club homes before hiring noted architect David S. Castle to design a clubhouse at this site, then on the edge of town. Contractor Oscar Rose completed the structure in 1955, and the building's construction and subsequent use influenced further development of south Abilene. With numerous meeting spaces and a great hall, the clubhouse serves many cultural and civic organizations and programs. The building's architecture is an example of post-World War II Colonial Revival design.
