Thomas Lincoln Farm

Indiana, Spencer County, Lincoln City
When Thomas Lincoln moved his family to Indiana in December 1816, this area was an unbroken wilderness. The forest was dense with massive trees and inhabited by wolves, bears, and panthers. The arrival of the Lincolns and other pioneers transformed the wilderness into a settled community. Land was cleared, cabins were built, and crops were planted.

Indiana, Spencer County, Lincoln City
In 1933 the Lincoln cabin site was excavated. Workmen uncovered the remains of sill logs and hearth stones and built the stone wall. Later, the bronze fireplace and sill log casting were placed on the site to outline where the cabin stood. Some of the original hearthstones are now on display in the Memorial Visitor Center.

By the 20th century, the original Lincoln log cabin (similar to the one pictured below) no longer existed and the Lincoln farm had become part of Lincoln City, a bustling railroad town.

On May 26, 1874 John Wesley Hardin came to Comanche for a second short visit with his parents preacher James Gipson Hardin and Mary Elizabeth Dixson Hardin to celebrate his 21st birthday and to race Rondo a horse he had purchased in Comanche in January. At the races held 1-1/2 miles NE of Comanche Rondo won first, brother Jo G Hardin's horse won second and cousin Bud Dixson's horse was third. Hardin claimed winnings of $3000 in cash, 50 head of cattle, 15 horses and a wagon. Brown County Deputy Sheriff Charles Webb was reported to have been at the races but he made no effort to detain Hardin. Hardin and his cousins gathered at Jack Wright's Saloon on the NE corner of the Square to celebrate. Aware of the posted reward because of his 40 murders, Hardin was always alert and moved quickly. For reasons unknown, Webb came to Comanche that afternoon following the races. Hardin was told that Webb had come to kill him and capture his friend Jim Taylor. The encounter between Hardin and Webb was brief - a few words between the two men, an exchange of bullets, then Webb fell dead near the door of the Jack Wright Saloon. Hardin was wounded but escaped.

Texas, Erath County, Dublin

Sam Houston Prim (1863-1946) arrived in Dublin in 1891 with $680 worth of bottling equipment, purchasing property at the southeast corner of Patrick and Elm Streets to house his bottling works. Prim bottled Dr Pepper, along with other products, under an informal agreement until 1925, when he formally chose as a Dr Pepper distribution territory a 44-mile radius centered on Dublin -- an area that remains as the company's territory today. At the time of Prim's death, Dr Pepper executives noted that he had bottled the soft drink longer than any other individual. The company has remained in operation since that time, making it the oldest Dr Pepper bottler in the world.

In 1893, John G. Harris, a former railroad president, joined with three other businessmen to establish Dublin National Bank. The bank opened on the heels of the incorporation of the town of Dublin in 1889. Dublin experienced considerable growth in the late 19th century due to the cotton industry and the arrival of the railroad. Dublin National Bank acquired assets of the only remaining local bank in 1933. It continues to operate at its original location and has experienced several building expansions. For more than 100 years, the bank has played a vital role in the development of the Dublin area. It is the oldest continuously operating bank in Erath County.

The community of Morgan Mill, named for early settler George Bryan Morgan, traces its history to the mid-19th century. A post office was established in 1877. Several community church congregations shared a brush arbor in the summers for revivals and other meetings. In 1910 the brush arbor was replaced with this permanent structure, named the Morgan Mill Tabernacle. In addition to serving the churches, the tabernacle also was used by the local school and other community organizations. It remains in use as a community gathering place.

Froman’s Road and Station

First improved road south of Towne branch of Salt. New fort sped settlement of central Nelson County.

McGee’s Stone Castle

Paul Froman’s in-laws, Thomas, John, and Patrick McGee, jointly acquired the 1000-acre Froman claim. Patrick McGee, mason, hunter, land-locator, salt-maker, ferry and tavern operator, built Stone Castle beside Froman’s Station before 1790. One of first stone houses built after settlement of central Kentucky.

The Bardstown Louisville Turnpike Company, chartered by the Kentucky Legislature in 1831, was capitalized at $130,000, increased to $200,000. Shares owned half by individuals, half by state. Turnpike completed July 1, 1838, at cost of $203,598. Length of road 29 miles, width 60 feet cleared with 40 graded. Tolls collected during the year ended Oct. 1841 $9,755. See Over.

Mile Stones, ca. 1835

Along the early turnpikes the law required mile posts. Some were cut from stone and some cast in iron. They showed the distance to each end of the turnpike. Typical of the stone markers are 14 along the east side of the present highway, at their approximate initial locations beside the old Bardstown Louisville Turnpike. See Over.

On October 4, 1862, Terry’s Texas Rangers, CSA, under the command of Col. John Wharton, were posted north of Bardstown at Fairgrounds crossroads on the Louisville Pike, to intercept units of Buell’s Union Army of the Ohio, moving south. Bragg’s CSA Army of Mississippi was withdrawing from Bardstown, moving east toward Harrodsburg.

(reverse)
The Ranger’s rear-guard action found itself confronted with far superior numbers. Wharton ordered the Rangers into columns and gave the bugle command to charge. The bold action broke the Union lines, scattering the cavalry troopers and infantry into disarray. This was a victory for the Texas Rangers who fought next at Battle of Perryville.
