California, Humboldt County, Ferndale
Also known as the Roberts Hotel, Ferndale Hotel, and the Italian-Swiss Hotel, it was the first and is the last of the original hostelries in Ferndale. Originally built in 1870, burnt to the ground and rebuilt in 1875, then remodeled in the late 1890’s, the Hotel Ivanhoe is also the oldest building in the historic district of Ferndale. After a second fire in 1943, the upstairs’ hotel ceased operations. Major renovations started in 1997 and the upstairs’ hotel reopened in 2001. “The Ivanhoe”, as it is affectionately known by the community is the oldest, most westerly hotel in the continental United States.

California, Humboldt County, Ferndale
Erected in the early 1870s, this magnificent structure was a drug store. In 1877 it became known as the Alford Drug Store until 1886. In 1879, Wells Fargo and Co. established an express station in the Alford Drug Store and maintained it through 1884. From 1886 until 1897 it was the Ferndale Lodge #220 IOOF, Michel’s Drug Store and the Bonetti Jewelry Store.

It became a saloon in 1897 through 1919 when it changed to a billiard and pool parlor due to prohibition. In 1925 it became known as Becker’s Billiard Parlor until it was purchased by the present day owner in 2000. The name was changed to “Poppa Joe’s”, named after one of its founders, Joe Alexandre, a local dairyman.

“Poppa Joe’s” has, for over 100 years, been a place, and still is, where old time camaraderie still flourishes.

Jerome's Famous Sliding Jail

Arizona, Yavapai County, Jerome
Back in 1905, the town jail was in the basement of what was then the Tony Kauzlarich House below the Dicus and Wagner Garage. Louis St. James was the magistrate and conservator of the peace.

What is believed to be Jerome's 3rd jail was located in the town yard between Main Street and Hull Ave. It pulled apart from the wood structure to which it was attached, and in the mid 30's during the slides, it slowly crept 225 feet from its original location to settle in the middle of Hull Avenue. The road was altered to go around it.

Legend has it that the jail continued to move to its final resting place here. However, in reality, it was eventually pushed from Hull Avenue to its present location where you see it today.

California, Humboldt County, Eureka
Richard Sweasey originally financed the construction of this theater which displays his name. Mr. Sweasey was a businessman in the early days of Eureka. Sweasey served as a member of the California State Legislature and several terms as a Humboldt County Supervisor. He is best known for developing the Eureka water system.

This was one of the most spectacular theaters of its time using some of the finest artisans and materials available. The theater was designed in a “Moorish Revival” style by San Francisco architects, James and Merrit Reid. The Architects also designed the Cliff House and the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco.

The theater first opened December 16, 1920 as The State Theater and continued to operate until 1971. From 1995 the building remained empty and deteriorating until Cherie and Rob Arkley purchased the property in May 2003.

Cherie and Rob Arkley revitalized this historic landmark beyond anyone’s expectation. All remaining original features were restored and the facility was thoroughly updated to accommodate modern requirements. All renovations were artfully done by Kramer Construction. The center reopened February 2, 2007 with a performance by Kenny Rogers.

California, Humboldt County, Eureka
The six Victorian era houses “905-935” Third Steet were developed by Samuel McFarland from 1884 to 1904. Mr. McFarland came to Humboldt County from New Brunswick, Canada in 1866 at the invitation of his brother-in-law, William Carson

Mr. McFarland was an independent logging contractor and real estate developer. From 1869 to 1897, he was the foreman for the Dolbeer and Carson lumber mills. The first house located at 905 Third Street was completed January 27, 1885 and was immediately occupied by Dr. W.H. Wallase (a physician surgeon) to be available for any mishaps at the mill.
911, 917 and 931 Third Street were all built in the summer of 1895.

Architecturally, this is one of the most significant streetscapes in Eureka. Queen Anne Style is represented by multiple gables, pattern shingles, lathe-turned columns, Eastlake colored glass and tall narrow windows.

Five of these Victorians have been restored and maintained by Carter Properties, as well as other historic buildings in this neighborhood.

Rockingham Meeting House

Vermont, Windham County, Rockingham

The Rockingham Meeting House is one of the finest remaining examples of New England Colonial architecture. It is the oldest intact public building in Vermont. Built between 1787 and 1801, it served Rockingham as a house of religious worship and town meetings for nearly a century. The arrival of industrialization shifted settlement to the nearby villages of Bellows Falls and Saxtons River. The Congregational church survived here until 1839 and annual Town Meetings continued here until 1869.

A sensitive restoration in 1907 was one fo the earliest historic preservation projects in Vermont. In 2000, the Meeting House was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. The Meeting House now hosts community events and is open seasonally.
