Founding and History of the Temple of the Holy Cross

English translation:
At this historic site, called Cerro de Sangremal (Hill of Bad Blood), occurred the conquest by the Spanish against the native people, probably on June 25, 1531. The next day the first Mass was celebrated here. At the same time a stone cross was carved, which today is still worshiped in this church. It was placed in a chapel made of reeds covered with a wood-shingled roof, the first in Querétaro. Next to it was a house for the Franciscans and a hospital for Indians.
In 1548 the church changed its location and building was begun on what is now called the Great Convent of St. Francis, while the Stone Cross was placed as a shrine on the road to Mexico City. By 1640 the convent and the present church had been constructed. On August 15, 1683 Friar Antonio Linaz established here a school for missionaries, the first of its kind in the Americas. For two centuries illustrious missionaries, explorers and civilizing peacekeepers left from here for the vast regions between Texas, Arizona and Central America.

Irondequoit and its Waterfront

New York, Monroe County, Rochester
Although most of the commercial activity took place on the west bank, Irondequoit rivaled Charlotte as a summer resort. At the north end of Irondequoit Bay was Sea Breeze with its docks, hotels and amusement park. Also on the bay were the Newport House and Glen Haven.
In 1872, Joseph Tone laid out 40 ft. x 100 ft. lots on railroad land that was rented out to summer guests. These visitors started erecting seasonal tents that later became permanent homes in the area we still call "Whie City." By 1884, people traveled to the shore via the Windsor Beach Railroad or electric trolley.
Directly across from this overlook was a paint factory. The "Roundhouse," also known as the "Summerville Garden Pavilion", was built in 1893 near the east bank ferry landing.
Located at the corner of Rock Beach Road and Washington Avenue was the Claverhouse. Its Post Office served Summerville and White City from 1895 to 1934.
Marine activities and boats have always been a part of Irondequoit's history, from its shipyards to its marinas.
Irondequoit is home to annual regattas and races hosted by the historic Genesee and Rochester Yacht Clubs.
The Rochester Yacht Club was incorporated in April of 1887. Shown above is one of their previous clubhouses. Today's building dates from 1922. The RYC celebrated its 125th birthday in 2002.
Yearly training exercises were held at the Naval Militia building that was torn down in the 1970's.
In October of 1876, Charlotte's Life-Saving Station opened on the west bank and later relocated to Summerville. In 1903, Captain George Gray and his crew received gold medals for their heroic rescue of the crew of the JOHN R. NOYES. The Life-Saving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service merged to form the Coast Guard on January 28, 1915. The Lighthouse Service was absorbed into the Coast Guard on July 1, 1939, weeks after the June 6th opening of today's "Station Rochester" building.

The Road to Zion

Nebraska, Douglas County, Florence
From the late 1840s through the 1860s, an exodus of more than 70,000 Mormons passed by here on their way to their "New Zion" in Utah. Starting from Nauvoo, Illinois in February 1846, the first group of at least 13,000 Mormons crossed into Iowa to escape religious persecution, then spent the next winter in the area of present-day Council Bluffs, Iowa and Omaha, Nebraska.

In 1847, Brigham Young led an advance party of 143 men, 2 women, and 3 children along the Platte River. At Fort Bridger, Wyoming they departed from the Oregon Trail to head southwest to the Great Salt Lake. Thousands of other Mormons soon followed. Today, a marked 1,624-mile auto tour route closely parallels their historic trek.

From 1856-60, many European converts walked more than 1,200 miles to Salt Lake City pushing and pulling handcarts (right) loaded with 500 pounds of supplies After 1860, the Mormon church sponsored oxen-drawn wagons to bring emigrants to the "New Zion".

The Bank of Florence

Nebraska, Douglas County, Florence
The Bank of Florence was chartered by the Nebraska Territorial legislature on January 18, 1856. It was located in this substantial building, constructed during the same year. Sheet steel one quarter inch thick, shipped by river steamboat from Pennsylvania steel mills, was used in conjunction with three foot thick masonry to build the vault.

The bank was owned and operate by the respected Iowa financial firm of Cook and Sargent. it played an important role in the aspiration of the town Florence to become the leading transportation and financial center of Nebraska. Frontier banking practices were lax and along with other banks in Nebraska Territory the Bank of Florence issued quantities of unsecured "wild cat" currency and financed speculation in land. Weakened by the financial panic of 1857 the Bank failed in 1859. Only one bank in Nebraska survived the Panic.

The building housed a variety of subsequent business operations including a second Bank of Florence which was chartered in 1904. It is now restored as it appeared in territorial times.

Mormon Pioneer Memorial Bridge

Nebraska, Douglas County, Florence
This Bridge is on the Mormon Pioneer Trail from Nauvoo, Illinois, to the Rocky Mountains. Driven from their homes by mobs, many of the dispossessed Mormon people crossed the Mississippi River on the ice in February, 1846. From these refugees five hundred volunteers for the Mexican War left here on the longest infantry march in recorded history.

Winter Quarters was established on the west bank of the Missouri River, and a ferry was operated at this site. Six hundred of these people - Nebraska's first white settlers - died here that winter.

April 5, 1847, Brigham Young and one hundred forty-seven others resumed the journey to select the trail and locate the place where the Mormon people could worship God in accordance with their religious belief. They reached the valley of the Great Salt Lake July 24 and founded Salt Lake City "in the top of the mountains." Thousands followed. They instituted modern irrigation and built and empire in the West.

To Honor the Memory of George A, (Jay) Chadwick Jr.

Maryland, Montgomery County, Boyds
In 1946 Mr. George A. (Jay) Chadwick, Jr. bought the Gold Mine Farm which now makes up a large part of Black Hill Regional Park. He cleared the property of brush and Fieldstone for a dairy farm which was operated for many years. This beautiful stone was saved and use to build the house that now serves as the Park Office. His early interest in land conservation and preservation led to the construction of ponds on the farm and placement of rocks in ditches to stop erosion. His generosity made it possible for The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission to purchase the land for construction and recreation.

Mr. Chadwick's untiring involvement in the Boyds community included serving as President of the Parent Teachers Association of Taylor Elementary School during the early years of integration. During his tenure as President , he saw the creation of a clothing bank at the school, whereby clothing was donated and given to needy children and a nutritious breakfast was served before classes each morning. His concern for the underprivileged families in the community led to the establishment of the Boyds Federal Credit Union, when he went door-to-door urging residents to join. The credit union became very successful, enabling citizens to obtain loans. He assisted in establishing Boyds Inc, (a daycare at Boyds Presbyterian Church), an organization for youth development for underprivileged children. He actively supported the Boyds Civic Association by donating numerous hours of legal expertise for many battles to preserve the Boyds environment and community. When Boyds needed a larger post office in 1974, he constructed one on his property on Barnesville Road that is still serving Boyds. He was an outstanding and dedicated member of the Boyds community.

Born in the Old Town section of Alexandria , Virginia on November 20, 1911, Mr. Chadwick showed his early zest for life by graduating from Gaithersburg High School at age 14 and The St. Albans School at age 16. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Princeton University and an LLB from Georgetown University. He was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar in 1936 and the Maryland Bar in 1944. He enlisted and served in the US army from 1943 to 1946, earning the rank of Captain. For most of his career in the practice of law, he was affiliated with the Washington DC firm of Frost and Towers.

Stutson Street Bridge

$

New York, Monroe County, Rochester
Twin brothers James and Joseph Stutson came to Rochester in 1822 and operated hotels in downtown Rochesterville and at Hanford Landing. In 1850, they bought the Commercial Hotel in Charlotte and renamed it "Stutson House." It was located at the northwest corner of River and Stutson Streets. Although the hotel burned down in 1895, the street and the new bridge across the Genesee would bear the Stutson name.
Plans to erect a bridge began in 1897, but the argument was over WHERE it should be built. City residents wanted to locate it where the Memorial Bridge now stands, while the Town of Greece wanted it built at Charlotte. Although a bill was introduced in 1899, the fight lasted until 1914, when Frank Dobson of Greece and Louis Dubelbeiss of Irondequoit ended the debate.
The double-leaf bascule bridge was started in the spring of 1915. The contract was awarded to the Penn Bridge Company. An accident delayed construction for a year when the east coffer dam was crushed. The bridge was completed in Decemeber of 1917 and cost about $300,000.
Although the bridge took two years to complete, it took just two months to demolish. The Colonel Patrick O'Rorke Memorial Bridge opened for traffic on Friday, October 1, 2004 and was dedicated the next day.
Demolition of the Stutson Street Bridge commenced the following Monday and was completed by the end of November 2004.
As you stand on this overlook, you are on the part of Stutson Street that was the western approach road that led onto the Stutson Street Bridge.
The control tower has been located on both the Irondequoit and Charlotte sides of the Bridge.
