Ohio, Tuscarawas County, Zoar
Side A
Construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal, beginning in Cleveland and running south to Portsmouth, began in 1825. As a means to pay for debts on the community's 5,500 acres of Tuscarawas County land, members of the Society of Separatists of Zoar contracted to construct this portion of the canal. They received $21,000 for this work, which was completed in 1827. Surplus goods were transported on Society owned and operated canal boats to outside markets via the Ohio and Erie Canal, which also brought manufactured items into Zoar.
(continued on other side)

Side B
(continued from other side)
Canal use declined steadily after the 1850s when railroads became the most efficient mode of transportation. Despite attempts to keep the canal economically viable, a widespread flood in 1913 spelled disaster for the Ohio and Erie Canal as a transportation system. A fish hatchery, created by sectioning off portions of the canal after the flood, was maintained until the construction of the Zoar Levee in 1935. The canal's towpath is currently being used as a recreational trail and within a few hundred yards of this park lie the preserved Canal Inn, Lock 10, and other feeder locks and millraces.

The discipline which makes the soldiers of a free country reliable in battle is not to be gained by harsh or tyrannical treatment-on the contrary-such treatment is far more likely to destroy than to make an army. It is possible to impart instruction and give commands in such manner and in such tone of voice as to inspire in the soldier no feeling but an intense desire to obey. While the opposite manner and tone of voice cannot fail to excite strong resentment and a desire to disobey. The one mode or the other of dealing with subordinates springs from a corresponding spirit in the breast of the commander. He who feels the respect which is due to others cannot fail to inspire in them regard for himself. While he who feels and hence manifests disrespect toward others especially his inferiors, cannot fail to inspire hatred against himself.

Zoar Town Hall
The Society of Separatists of Zoar built the Zoar Town Hall in 1887 when the village was formally incorporated. Established in 1817 by German religious dissidents, Zoar became one of the most successful experiments in communal living during the 19th century. Early hardships encouraged the Zoarites, in 1819, to establish a communal system to ensure economic and social security. The Society disbanded in 1898. The Zoar Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.

Side B
Zoar and The Ohio & Erie Canal
In 1825, the Society of Separatists of Zoar contracted to build seven miles of the Ohio and Erie Canal, including four locks, just southwest of the village. Payment for the work, completed in 1828, allowed the society to settle its land debt. The canal made a significant economic contribution to the village, bringing packet boat passengers to the Zoar Hotel and providing new outlets for goods produced by the Society. Today the canal is part of the Ohio & Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor.

Side A
The Zoar Garden was the Separatist's most public manifestation of their faith, its religious symbolism masked by its lush beauty. It provided both residents and visitors with a place to relax and reflect. This "lustgarden," or pleasure garden and the accompanying greenhouse were mentioned by travelers as early as 1829. Although some vegetables and fruits were grown here, the garden was filled mainly with flowers. [continued on other side]

Side B
[continued from other side] The Zoar Garden represented the New Jerusalem as described in Revelation 21. The center tree is Christ, or the Tree of Life, surrounded by a hedge representing Heaven. The surrounding twelve trees represent the apostles. The radiating paths are the paths people walk in life, and the path around the Garden perimeter is the World. To get to Heaven, believers had to look toward Christ.

This high-performance, submarine-launched weapon is considered to be the first successful torpedo developed for use against other submarines. The Mark 37 was designed to swim out of a 21-inch torpedo tube, to which it remained attached by a length of wire. The wire allowed the torpedo to be "steered" to the target from inside the submarine. The Mark 37 was also equipped with a sophisticated homing system which utilized both active and passive sonar. Several versions of this torpedo saw service in the U.S. Navy from the late 1950's through the early 1980s before being replaced by the more advanced Mark 28.

Weight-1,700 lbs.; Length-13.5 feet; Diameter-19 inches.

Zoar was founded in 1817 by a group of immigrants from Wurttemburg, Germany, who sought religious freedom. The mandatory military service in Germany prompted many pacifist groups, like the Zoarites, to immigrate to the United States. The separatist group chartered the "Twelve Principles of Separatism," a document that guided the community and laid out the framework for how they would live within the community. According to the "Twelve Principles of Separatism," the Zoarites assert "We cannot serve the state as bodily soldiers, since as a Christian cannot murder his enemy, much less his friend."

Here, in what has been described as "God's Acre," is the final resting place of members of the Society of Separatists of Zoar (1817-1898) as well as today's descendants and residents. The early Zoarites' simple religion forbade headstones, believing all were equal in death. These early burials, including fifty who perished in an 1834 cholera epidemic, are to your left. The headstone of Zoar leader Joseph Bimeler was erected later. (continued on other side)

Side B
(continued from other side) In the 1860s, the Separatists began using wooden markers, now deteriorated, and eventually limestone and marble memorials. The early graves were laid in chronological order, not in family plots. Three additions in 1900, 1925, and 1996 have enlarged the cemetery. The road, which formerly followed the shore of nearby Zoar Lake, was changed to its present location in 1925.
