Recreational Boating

Whether paddling a canoe, riding a riverboat, or sailing a yacht, pleasure boating has always been a favorite St. Joseph activity. Recreational boating has remained popular due to well-stocked fishing grounds and accessible private and city marinas. Harbor dredging and the safety provided by the Coast Guard further benefit boaters.

Canoeists and kayakers, motor boaters and sailors continue to enjoy the river and lake. The St. Joseph River Yacht Club, founded in 1913, hosts social and competitive sailing events. Youth sailing programs help carry on local recreational boating traditions.

Schooners rigged for sailing and steam-driven freighters were once common sights at St. Joseph and Benton Harbor. Fruit, lumber, and manufactured goods made up much of the port's early trade. By the 1870s, vessels were regularly carrying thousands of summer "day trippers" from Chicago. These visitors came to enjoy the community's beaches, orchards, and amusement parks, giving rise to a thriving tourist industry.

In the early 20th century, goods increasingly moved by rail and truck, and tourists traveled more by automobile. Still, the harbor's terminals and strategic location remain for bulk freighters carrying cargo in local, regional, and even international trade.

U.S. Lighthouse Supply Depot

Michigan, Berrien County, St. Joseph

A U.S. lighthouse supply depot was built at St. Joseph in 1893. For a quarter century, this depot equipped all of Lake Michigan's lights with materials ranging from lenses to lamp oil. Operations of the St. Joseph Depot were transferred to Milwaukee in 1917. In later years, the site housed branches of the military.

Following this service, the site operated as a restaurant in the 1990s. Two buildings, the lens repair shop and workers barracks, were torn down. A main storage structure and an officers' residence remain. In 2003, the St. Joseph River Yacht Club acquired the site. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it survives as one of only two historic Lighthouse Depots in Michigan.

Commercial Fishing

Michigan, Berrien County, St. Joseph

Commercial fishing was one of St. Joseph's earliest maritime trades. Native Americans and the settlers who followed found the river and lake full of trout, whitefish, sturgeon, and perch. By the 1900s, family-run fisheries became major contributors to the local economy.

In 1960, twenty-six local fish tugs were hauling in over 10,000 pounds of fish daily. Just 10 years later, the combined challenges of predatory sea lampreys, depleted fish populations, and increasing government regulations left only three tugs fishing from St. Joseph.

Reduced profits and Michigan's promotion of sport fishing contributed to commercial fishing's further decline. By 1971, this once-vital maritime industry had ceased at St. Joseph.

St. Joseph River Swing Bridge

Michigan, Berrien County, St. Joseph

St. Joseph's swing bridge allows passage for both maritime and railroad commerce. An alternative to a drawbridge, the swing bridge pivots open for vessels to pass and closes for trains to cross. St. Joseph's swing bridge is typically left open until a train approaches.

Three swing bridges have crossed the St. Joseph River at this location. The first swing bridge opened in 1870 when the Chicago & Michigan Lake Shore Railroad expanded. The second bridge was built by the Chicago & West Michigan Railroad in 1887. The Pere Marquette Railroad commissioned the present bridge, which was completed in 1904. The bridge is owned and maintained by CSX (Chessie and Seaboard Expanded) Transportation.

Due to its well-balanced construction, the 231-foot, 300-ton bridge can be turned with a single 10-horsepower electric motor. It takes approximately 42 seconds to open.

In 1879 the Southern Pacific Mail and Stage Line Company built a one-room adobe station and mesquite corral. It was a horse changing and water stop on the route from the railroad station at Picacho for passengers going to Florence and beyond. In 1913, rancher Juan Verdugo recorded it as a homestead; in 1917 he added a room and raised the roof. About the same time a ranch school was built to the north. In 1920, the property returned to the State. Later, area ranchers leased the land, using the building as bunkhouses and storage until the late 1980's.

Forster Building

Minnesota, Brown County, New Ulm

Frederick Forster came to the United States in 1850 and taught school in New York. He moved to New Ulm in 1858, where he continued teaching, becoming the city's postmaster in 1861.

In 1860, Forster purchased this lot and the following year, with his partner, Friedrich Gommel, a Cincinnati potter, opened New Ulm's first pottery, selling "all sorts of fine and ordinary dishes."

During the Dakota Conflict, this building, located just outside the barricades, became an important defense outpost. On August 23, 1862, Henry Swift, a future Governor of Minnesota, and about twenty men were assigned to defend this structure. Charles Flandrau wrote, "A number of our men took possession of the brick Post Office . . . and loopholed it in all stories and through the roof, thus protecting quite a range of the rear of the town." After the Dakota withdrew, the town was evacuated. Upon his return, Forster wrote that he "found all the buildings that hadn't been burned had all been broken into, with chests and crates opened and their contents stolen." The pottery closed shortly after the Civil War. Gommel served several terms as New Ulm's constable while Forster returned to his work as postmaster and teacher.

It remained a private home until 1925 when A. J. Stoltenberg bought the property to expand his Broadway Tire Company. This is one of few buildings in the city dating from the time of the Dakota Conflict.

Commander of federal forces during the Mexican Revolution, Victoriano Huerta (b. 1854) became President of Mexico in 1913, after the arrest and before the assassination of Francisco Madero. Huerta resigned a year later and went into exile. In 1915, U.S. agents arrested him in Newman, New Mexico, where he was meeting fellow revolutionary Pascual Orozco. For violating U.S. neutrality laws, Huerta was taken to Fort Bliss and confined. Huerta’s health deteriorated before he could stand trial, and authorities released him to his El Paso home on West Yandell Street. In January 1916, Huerta died and was buried in Concordia Cemetery before being reinterred in Evergreen Cemetery. He is the only former foreign president buried in El Paso.
