Black and Gray Squirrels

District of Columbia, Washington

"We ask every American to lend a hand to save Silver-Tail" -- William Temple Hornaday (1913)

When the gray squirrel nearly disappeared
The gray squirrel once was considered such a pest that bounties were put on it. In 1749, Pennsylvania paid three pence for each dead squirrel. In Ohio, tax payers could use carcasses to pay part of their taxes. By 1890, the gray squirrel had nearly been exterminated.

National Zoo helps save gray squirrel!
Scientists, including William Temple Hornaday of the Smithsonian Institution, believed the gray squirrel was in danger of extinction. The National Zoo stepped in to help save the species. According to 1906 Zoo records, we bought 16 gray squirrels for $1 each.

Black Squirrels come to Washington
In 1906 we also received 10 black squirrels from the Department of Crown Lands, Ontario. Between 1902 and 1906, 18 black and 66 gray squirrels were released around the Zoo.The black squirrels you see throughout Washington today are descendents of these animals.

Buenger Store

This three-story building is a fine example of Queen Anne commercial architecture. The original southern section was erected in 1892 for the Buenger Furniture Store, while the corner building was constructed in 1902.

Louis Buenger Sr. was born in Hanover, Germany, and settled in New Ulm in 1863. He opened his first furniture shop on the corner of Minnesota and 3rd North in 1876. The business proved so successful that he erected a brick building at 225 North Minnesota Street. Ten years later, his son, Louis Buenger Jr., expanded the business, moving the Schalk store, a survivor of the Dakota Conflict, from the corner lot. That building still stands, although greatly altered, at 822 North State Street.

The corner building was designed by local architect Herman Amme. The New Ulm News reported, "The design shows a very handsome front, with a round corner where the entrance will be.... On the corners as supports to the upper stories there will be heavy columns of polished granite, something that has not heretofore been used in a building in New Ulm."

In 1912, Louis Buenger Jr. left the business and moved to Minneapolis. At that time, Emil F. Buenger, a brother, took charge of the business, later joined by another brother, Otto J. Buenger. In 1920, they moved to a new building at 203 North Minnesota.

German-English translation:

Hölbinghaus

This 15th Century gothic mansion was acquired in 1725 by Johann Fischer, the Treasurer of the mint in Hall. It was probably at the that time that the stucco artist, Anton Gigl, who had moved to Innsbruck from Wessobrun in 1723, gave the structure its lush baroque stucco. From 1800 to 1827 the house was owned by Sebastian Hölbling, and it has borne his name since then.

[Front]
Early border town, prominent trading and outfitting center, and one of the farthest northwest of U. S. towns to be based on southern culture and economy. Settled about 1820, mainly by southern pioneers, the town became the seat of justice for Clay County, 1822.

Many settlers of northwest Missouri and the far West outfitted here, as did caravans during the '49 Gold Rush. Liberty Landing, 4 miles south, was an important Missouri River port. Nearby is Liberty Bridge.

The Mexican War, 1846-1848, with promise of southwest territory and trade, was popular in Missouri and the State raised 1358 troops. Alexander W. Doniphan of Liberty led the First Regiment of Missouri Volunteers on a brilliant expedition covering 3,600 land and 2,000 water miles in 12 months, highlighted with victory at Battle of Sacramento, 1847. Doniphan's grave is in Fairview Cemetery.

William Jewell College was chartered, 1849, under Baptist sponsorship. On the school's "Campus of Achievement" is Jewell Hall, a fine example of Classic - Revival architecture. The College maintains a museum.

The site of the U. S. Arsenal at Liberty Landing, raided in 1855 by pro-slavery men, recalls the Kansas-Missouri border disputes over the extension of slavery. The arsenal was raided again, April 1861, constituting the first civilian Civil War hostility against the Federal government in the State. During and after the War, the area suffered greatly from guerrilla and outlaw depredations.

Jesse James (1847-1882), America's most fabulous outlaw, was born near Kearney, 10 miles northeast. Jesse and his brother Frank were members of Quantrill's Confederate guerrilla band.

Excelsior Springs, founded in 1880, famous spa of the Midwest, with its unusual Hall of Waters, is 15 miles northeast. North Kansas City, an industrial expansion, founded, 1912, by a development company, is 12 miles southwest. Near Excelsior Springs is the pre-Civil War Watkins Woolen Mill, and near Liberty is "Multnomah" home of Indian agent Major John Dougherty (1791-1860).

In Liberty is the site of the jail where Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith was held, 1838.

United States Life Saving Service

Michigan, Berrien County, St. Joseph

The waters off St. Joseph and Benton Harbor have long served as an active and frequently dangerous avenue of maritime trade. High winds and hazardous waves made shipwrecks a common occurrence.

To assist mariners, a U.S. Life Saving Service Station was established at St. Joseph in 1877—one of the first on the Great Lakes. The government commissioned buildings, boats, rescue equipment, and a lifesaving crew. The Station's skilled "surfmen" performed many daring rescues.

In 1915, the U.S. Coast Guard assumed the duties of the Life Saving Service. St. Joseph's Coast Guard Station works to secure the safety of maritime activity for a nearly 900-square-mile district along the lakeshore.
