Winds blowing across the usually dry, sandy riverbed of Rio Salado formed dunes along this part of the Rio Grande Valley. The Rio Grande, just southwest here, follows a massive geological trench shaped millions of years ago when huge blocks of land sank as the earth in central New Mexico slowly began pulling apart. The resulting Rio Grande Rift uplifted Los Piños Mountains to the east. Northwest are the Sierra Ladrones. Rocks on their 9,000–foot crests are similar to those buried four miles beneath these dunes.

Dinosaur Alley

Maryland, Prince George's County, Laurel
Dinosaurs lived during most of the Mesozoic Era (235 to 65 million years ago), on every continent on Earth. In Maryland, each of three Mesozoic time periods in which dinosaurs live is represented in its geology -- Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. Therefore, it is not surprising that Maryland has produced more dinosaur bones than almost any other state east of the Mississippi River.

Dinosaur Alley

Maryland's "Dinosaur Trail" occupies the geologic region that runs parallel to the Route 1 corridor between Washington and Baltimore. The rock layers in this area are about 100 million years old and fall in the Early Cretaceous Period (144 to 65 million years ago). They contain one of the largest concentrations of dinosaur fossils on the East Coast. Thousands of fossils have been found in the gray and red clays near Laurel, Maryland.

Many different dinosaur fossils have been found in a section of the Dinosaur Trail called "Dinosaur Alley," including predators resembling Acroncanthosaurus, small Deinonychus-like meat eaters, the armored dinosaurs, Princonodon, duck bill-like Tentontosaur, and the Maryland State dinosaur, Astrondon johnstoni, a sauropod.

One hundred million years ago, this area was a broad, flat delta with slow, curving rivers. Remains of dinosaurs, plants and other animals were washed by floodwaters into oxbow lakes that formed at sharp bends in the rivers. There, the remains became trapped, were covered with sediment, and slowly fossilized. The Fossils here in the "Muirkirk Deposit" area are from these ancient oxbow lakes.

Heine Weber Smokehouse

Pennsylvania, Lancaster County, Willow Street
This smokehouse was removed from the site of the "Heine" Weber homestead in the historic Weaverland Valley. The house and barn on the Weber homestead were built in the early 1760s, and this building appears to be of the same period.

The roof was removed, the stone walls were dismantled, and the materials were moved to this site in the summer of 1980. It was reconstructed of the same stones in the same size and design as the original structure, and the roof was again replaced.

The bakeoven immediately south of the smokehouse was also constructed of materials taken from the Weber homestead. The stones, timbers, and tile roof were taken from the "Heine" Weber House. These structures have been preserved here as a memorial to the Weber/Weaver families, whose ancestor Johann Anton Weber settled here in the Pequea Valley in 1711 and whose sons - Henry, Jacob, and George - moved to what is now known as the Weaverland Valley.

Blacksmith Shop

This building exemplifies the blacksmith shops that existed in all early communities. These shops were always an important part of local agricultural and community development. This shop is built in the exact dimensions of what is known as the Cooper's Blacksmith shop in the Groffdale Valley. While that building is no longer being used as a blacksmith shop, it remains in the community and is the oldest known blacksmith shop building (deeded in 1785) in the Groffdale and Weaverland Valleys.

The stones, timbers, and rafters used in this structure were preserved from the "Heine" Weber Barn, which was built in the Weaverland Community before the Revolutionary War.

Millstones

Pennsylvania, Lancaster County, Willow Street
These millstones stand in silent testimony to the importance of milling in Lancaster County. The first mill was built only a few years after the Mennonites arrived in 1710. Vital to agriculture, the mills increased in number to over 200 by 1839. Most were gristmills, where grain was processed; yet there were also mills where hemp was crushed for rope or tannic acid was obtained from bark. Stones were used to grind cocoa for chocolate, pigments for paint, and apples for cider.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, mills were central to the life of Lancaster County; towns grew frequently from these gathering places. Today few of these mills are still in operation, and even fewer continue to use millstones.

Early milling techniques, using millstones like these, can be seen at Millbridge Village, located on the Pequea Creek, the mill at the Village was begun in 1738 by John Herr, a grandson of Hans Herr.
