In 1867, Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe and her husband Calvin bought thirty acres of the Fairbanks Grant in Mandarin which served as their winter home until the winter of 1883-1884. The move to Florida was due to plans for philanthropy among the Negroes and a desire to benefit her son's health. While in Florida, Mrs. Stowe, author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin", wrote sketches called "Palmetto Leaves". The Stowes were active in local charitable and religious activities.

The Ocean Shore Railway was Incorporated in May of 1905 to build a “road" along the coast from San Francisco to Santa Cruz via Half Moon Bay under the leadership of A.D. Bowen, J.D. Harvey, J.A. Folger, P.D. Martin, and others.
A 26 mile section between Tunitas and Scott Creek was never completed and passengers made the connection on Jim Gray’s Auto Stage Line in Stanley Steamers.
Ending here at the Laurel Grove Inn, the Swanton Spur, financed by the San Vicinte Lumber Company to transport logs to their mill in Santa Cruz, also carried the loggers to Davenport’s Landing seeking entertainment and libations following payday.
Bankruptcy was declared in 1909 as a result of the 1906 earthquake and its financial aftershocks. The railroad was reorganized in 1911 as the Ocean Shore Railroad Company
The dream of a railroad between San Francisco and Santa Cruz was never fulfilled. The last train ran on August 16, 1920.

American Victory

Maryland, Kent County, Chestertown
Kent County braced for the return of the British in August 1814. Enemy raiders has destroyed nearby Georgetown the previous year while terrorizing Maryland's Eastern Shore. Now they were back in an attempt to divert attention from their main operation against Baltimore. They landed on August 30, and marched inland to encounter the American militia at the Isaac Caulk farm.

The Americans stood their ground during the night attack. Heavy British casualties included a popular young officer, Captain Sir Peter Parker. The victory in the Battle of Caulk's field boosted American Morale following the enemy's invasion of Washington, D. C.

"I feel justified in the assertion, that the gallantry of the officers and men on this occasion could not be excelled by any troops." -- American Lieutenant Colonel Philip Reed, commander of the militia at Caulk's Field, to Brigadier General Benjamin Chambers, August 1814

68th Indiana - Capt. Edmund Finn.
101st Indiana - Maj. George W. Steele.

These two regiments were detached from their Brigade by order of Gen. Brannan at the Snodgrass house to cover the withdrawal of his portion of the line. Gen. Brannan reported them about 7 o'clock to the Commanding Officer of the 35th Ohio, then holding the right of VanDerveer's Brigade, and they were posted upon this line to the right of the 35th and its supporting line the 9th Indiana. New Jersey, Bergen County, Fair Lawn
Reflecting the need for additional river crossings as the area grew in the late 19th century, the contract for the original bridge was awarded in July 1890 to Riverside Bridge and Iron Works of Paterson, N.J. for $8,895. This original bridge was washed away on October 10 during the disastrous Passaic river flood of 1903. The flood destroyed practically all the bridges over the Passaic River in Bergen, Passaic, and Essex counties. In 1904, a contract for the second bridge was awarded to Cyclopean Iron Works of Jersey City, N.J. for $27,890. The second bridge, which remained in use from 1904 to 2008, was a through grider [sic] bridge with three 82' spans supported on stone abutments and concrete piers. In 2008, construction began on the third bridge which was placed in service February 2009.

[Front]
Dallas County, organized 1841, was first called Niangua for the river flowing within its borders, but the name proved difficult and it was changed to Dallas in 1844 for U.S. Vice Pres. George M. Dallas. Settled in the early 1830's by pioneers from Tenn., Ind., and Ohio, the county lies in territory ceded by the Osage Indians in 1808.

Buffalo, the county seat, laid out 1841, is on an extensive plain named Buffalo Head Prairie for a buffalo skull landmark erected by first settler Mark Reynolds, 1833. In Oct., 1863, Gen. Joseph O. Shelby's Confederates burned the courthouse and raiders burned the Methodist Church in July, 1864, then used as a courthouse. A pro-Union county, Dallas suffered numerous guerrilla raids.

In a futile effort to get a railroad, the county issued $235,000 in bonds in 1869-71, and contracted with the Laclede and Fort Scott R.R. Co., for roadbed and bridges. The contract was fulfilled, but the railroad was rerouted to miss the county and it then refused to pay. The debt plus interest rose into millions before it was compromised at $300,000 and finally paid off in 1940.

(Continued from other side)
Dallas County, with timbered Ozark hills on the east and rolling prairies on the west, is a livestock, dairy, and grain farming area. From the late 1860's to the 1890's, lead and zinc were mined. In 1882 a vein of fuller's earth, one of first discovered in U.S., was found near Buffalo and worked briefly.

Urbana, to the northwest, dates from the mid-1860's. Other communities developing after the Civil War are Charity, Celt, Plad, Redtop, Tunas, Louisburg, Windyville, Long Lane. In 1870's, near Buffalo, was Friendship, a communal colony founded by Alexander Longley, the mutualistic Home Employment Co-op Co., at Long Lane, was founded, 1901.

Bennett Springs State Park in Dallas and Laclede counties, dates from 1924. James A. Brice in 1837 was the first settler at the spring which wells up an avg. 71 million gals. daily in a gravelly basin. The area is described in "The Calling of Dan Matthews," by Harold Bell Wright. In Dallas County were born Philip A. Bennett, Lt. Gov. of Mo., 1925-29, Congressman, 1941-42; and Marion T. Bennett, Congressman, 1943-49. Near Buffalo is site of noted pioneer Reynolds Nursery.

The Walled City of Charles Town

$

South Carolina, Charleston County, Charleston
In 1670 English men and women established the Carolina settlement at Albemarle Point on the Ashley River, the present-day site of Charles Towne Landing State Park. Ten years later, the settlers moved their town to its location here on the peninsula. By the 1690s there was a formal plan to enclose 62 acres of the settlement within a brick and earthen fortification to protect its residence from French, Spanish, and hostile Indians.
Charles Town's fortifications were completed by 1711. Bastions or small forts were named for Lord Proprietors Granville, Craven Colleton, and Carteret were constructed at each corner of the walled city. Three triangular redans were constructed in the wall along the Cooper River. A drawbridge guarded the land entrance at Meeting and Broad streets. The Half Moon Battery stood at the foot of Broad Street to provide a formal entrance to the town from the water. Charles Town was the only British walled city built in North America.

Anatomy of the Walled City
The engineering plans for the walls likely were based on European design principals for the fortifications. The seawall or curtain wall that fronted the Cooper River, as well as the bastions, redans and the Half Moon Battery, were built of hand-made bricks to protect the town against a sea assault. The seawall was six feet wide at the base and extended some 15 feet above the low tide line.
Historians and archaeologists have found a few records that describe how the landward walls were constructed. They believe these fortifications were made by digging a ditch to create a moat and piling up the excavated earth to form walls that were strengthened with wood. They think these walls were eight to 10 feet high.

The Elusive City Wall
(Advertised sale inset) By the 1730s most of the earthen walls were demolished to accommodate the growing town. The harbor-side fortifications remain intact through the American Revolution. In 1784 the City advertised the bastions and redans for sale at public auction. The new owners demolished the aboveground portions of the fortifications and paved over them to make way for the expanding commercial waterfront. Gradually, knowledge about the location and design of the wall faded from community memory.

(Map included)
This 1711 map by Edward Crisp shows walled Charles Town. The large wharves and flotilla of merchant ships speak to the town's booming economy. The names of later streets are labeled red.

Spring Hill, Tennessee ~ November 29, 1864

Tennessee, Maury County, Spring Hill
In 1864, Spring Hill was a small, prosperous farming community. Although the town had been occupied by both Confederate and Federal forces at various times, it had not been seriously impacted by the war. All that changed as Hood's and Schofield's armies clashed south of town. Hundreds of wagons and artillery pieces passed through the town, earthworks were erected around the town by Union defenders, and both armies marched past on their way to Franklin. During the evening of November 29, Schofield made the McKissack House his field headquarters.

The next day, hundreds of southern and northern wounded were left behind by the armies to be cared for by the community. On the night of December 17, 1864, Hood's Army was again camped overnight south of Spring Hill, following their retreat from the Battle of Nashville. A brief cavalry skirmish would be fought north of town, and then the Union army would pass through in pursuit. For the rest of the war, Federal units would garrison the town.

Tennessee, Maury County, Spring Hill
The area on which most of the town of Spring Hill is located was originally part of land grants to three Revolutionary War veterans, George Doherty, John Hardin and Ezekiel Polk. Albert Russel of Virginia, another Revolutionary War veteran, constructed the first home on the site in 1808-1809. James Peters built a church here in 1819, and the site became a popular religious revival location in the first half of the nineteenth century. General Richard Ewell bought the first Jersey cows here in 1867, and he is also credited with contributing to the birth of harness racing. Branham and Hughes Military Academy was established in 1897 in the community, and educated thousands of young men before its closing in 1932.

In 1935 the Tennessee Children's Home opened in Spring Hill. In 1938 a disastrous fire destroyed the entire business district on the eastern side of town, and another conflagration in 1940 damaged much of the western business district. A tornado in January 1963 also devastated the community. The town's population had remained steady at approximately 1,200 between 1900 and 1989. The opening of the Saturn Automobile Company in 1989 has resulted in great growth in Spring Hill, which is expected to continue into the 21st century.
