The Skewarkee Meeting House was formed in 1789 and assumed a 'mantel of authority' for smaller congregations between the Roanoke and Tar Rivers as well as the Kehukee Association. In 1839, on land donated by Brother Joseph D. Biggs, the present church was built. Cushing Biggs Hassell served as pastor for the 82 members. His son, Sylvester, succeeded him. Together they compiled “A History of the Church of God” in 1885, frequently cited work on Primitive Baptist history and doctrine.
