Erected by the Samuel Ward Society, Children of the American Revolution of Westerly, Rhode Island, to mark the site of the birthplace of Lieutenant-Colonel Samuel Ward, born in Westerly, November 17, 1756, died in New York City, August 16, 1832. He engaged in active service in the War of the American Revolution, was commissioned Captain, May 8, 1775, Major, January 5, 1778, Lieutenant-Colonel, April 12, 1779.
