The Roosevelt Campobello International Park is a unique example of international cooperation - jointly administered, staffed, and funded by the peoples of Canada and the United States. Established by international treaty in 1964, the 1,134-hectare (2800-acre) park remains a symbol of the close relationship between our two countries. When she declared the Park Visitor Center open in 1967, the Queen Mother Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth expressed the sentiments of both countries with these words: It is most fitting that the memory of so gallant and illustrious an American should be honored on the Canadian Island which he loved.
In June 1933, after completing his history-making first "Hundred Days" in office, FDR and three of his sons sailed from Marion, Massachusetts to Campobello aboard the 13.7-metre (45-foot) schooner Amberjack II (photo 1). They were met for a picnic on the shore (photo 2) by Eleanor Roosevelt and various dignitaries including the officers of the USS Indianapolis, anchored in Canadian waters off Welshpool. The visit lasted three days and two nights. During his visit, FDR made the following remarks:
I was thinking also, as I came through the Narrows and saw the line of fishing boats and the people on the wharfts, both here at Welch Pool [sic.] and also in Eastport, that this reception here is probably the finest example of friendship between nations - permanent friendship between nations - that we can possibly have.

Son personnel, sa façon d'opérer et sa gestion conjointe témoignent des liens étroits qui unissent les peuples du Canada et des États-Unis. Le Parc, d'une superficie de 1,134 hectares (2800 acres) fut établi en vertu d'une entente internationale signée en 1964 qui témoigne des relations étroites entre nos duex pays. Lors de l'inauguration de parc en 1967, sa Majesté la Reine Mère Elizabeth exprima les sentiments existant entre les deux pays comme suit: "Il est approprié d'y honorer la mémoire d'un personnage américain aussi courageux et aussi célèbre que FDR sue cette île canadienne qu'il adorait tant."
Au mois de juin 1933, une fois qu'il eut complété les 100 jours traditionnels comme chef du gouvernement américain, FDR et ses trois fils appareillèrent à bord d'un voilier de 13.7 mètres (45 pi.), le Amerjack II (photo 1) de Marion, Massachusetts, vers l'ile de Campobello. À leur arrivée, ils furent accueillis par Eleanor Roosevelt, ainsi qu'une foule de dignitaires comprenant les officiers du USS Indianapolis ancré dans les eaux canadiennes à proximité de Welshpool. Tous se sont rassemblés pour un pique-nique sur le rivage. Leur visite dura trois jours et deux nuits. Durant sa visite, FDR fit la remarque suivante:
"Comme nous traversions le passage du "Narrows", nous apercevions les bateaux de pêche et les habitants sur les quais ici à Welsh Pool (sic.) et également à Eastport. Je me disais que la réception des habitants est sûrement le plus bel exemple de l'amitié qui existe entre nos deux nations, une amitié de longue date!"
