Lieutenant Ricketts of Baltimore County was killed in action during World War II, aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Yorktown (CV 5), in the battle of the Coral Sea on May 8, 1942. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for service above and beyond the call of duty. A destroyer-escort vessel, the USS Ricketts (DE 254), was commissioned in his honor on October 5, 1943.
