End of An Era

New York, Nassau County, Oyster Bay

The Hamlet changed drastically and quickly in the early 20th century, but things began to slow after Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency came to an end in 1909. His impact, however, would continue to shape Oyster Bay for years to come, even after his passing.

The period following Theodore Roosevelt’s death in 1919 was marked by a wave of improvements throughout the Hamlet, some with the intention to memorialize him, others with the desire to improve the quality or character of the downtown, and in many cases both. There were building improvements throughout the downtown, the renovation of Christ Church in 1925, and the dedication of Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in 1928, to name a few.--------------------------------Oyster Bay was also chosen as the seat of government for all of the Town of Oyster Bay, spanning from the north shore to the south and encompassing 36 villages and hamlets, in 1930. The Town Clerk’s office, built in 1902, was greatly expanded on, adding a second story and a mirrored wing to the north. Town Hall has since expanded with the acquisition of the old Lyric Theater in 1973, which was renovated to serve as additional governmental offices.--------------------------------Other cosmetic changes came through the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression. A new U.S. Post Office was constructed in 1936. The structure was designed to look like the newly expanded Town Hall on the opposite side of the public park. The post office was decorated with four sculptures by the Italian-born sculptor Leo Lentelli, and features six murals depicting Oyster Bay history from 1653 to 1936.

Oscalui was succeeded by Newtychanning consisting of twenty eight log houses burned by General Sullivan August 9th 1779, in his campaign against the Iroquois. Here was the last Indian attempt at occupation along the Susquehanna in Bradford County. Oscalui was visited by Conrad Weiser as early as 1725.

The second Bradford County Courthouse, located directly behind the present Courthouse, was constructed in 1847 and occupied in 1850. It was not long before the growing business of the county caused the Courthouse to become overcrowded. An annex was erected in 1857 housing offices of the prothonotary and register and recorder. From 1903 to 1974 the annex served the Bradford County Historical Society as its headquarters. The brick “fireproof annex” has a hipped roof design; stone lintels and sills; decorative brick work; center parahet; and a cut stone foundation.

In 1834 the congregation built their first church on the north side of Pine Street but it was not until 1835 that the church was declared The First Presbyterian Church of Towanda. Construction was started in 1853, on this site, donated by Edward Overton, a key figure in the commercial growth of Towanda. The building was first occupied in 1855. The gothic revival style Presbyterian Church was a dentilated brick tower with flat roof and castellated buttress; lancet windows; and elaborate brick corbelling.

This handsome building was built in 1896 using stone from the same quarry as the Courthouse, Old Jail and Christ Episcopal Church. The building is Italianate style with a hipped roof and pressed metal cornice with paired brackets and dentils. The projecting oriel windows feature a swag detail between the floors. It was once called the “Ontario Block” because a men’s club of that name was located on the second floor. On the first floor were four stores. Today the building is the publishing center for The Daily and Sunday Review newspaper, whose first president was D. M. Turner. The Turner family was principal stockholder of the Towanda Printing Co. until summer 1977.

Ground was broken in April 1896 and the cornerstone was laid with appropriate ceremonies Sept. 7 the same year. The contractor was Thomas Bradley of Corning, NY. The pedimented street façade has massive pilasters above a rusticated base, and an anthemion surrounded by olive branches proclaims “justice, law, mercy” in the pediment. A tall octagonal dome rises 70 feet above first floor level and is roofed with brown-green glazed terra-cotta tiles. The sandstone was quarried from Barclay Mountain and the beautiful interior woodwork is all highly finished white oak native to Bradford County.

Pennsylvania, Bradford County, Towanda
The old jail is located in the center of Towanda’s Historic District. Avery Frank, architect and contractor from Montrose, designed and built the jail. His plan included a stone dwelling for the sheriff and his family. A three-story cell block and a prison yard enclosed by a 20-foot stone wall, all built with locally quarried stone. The jail was occupied in 1873 and was praised for its modern design. By 1913 it was considered seriously outdated. A complete modernization took place in 1949-50, which included removal of the ventilation tower. The jail closed in 1991. County commissioners transferred the property to Bradford County Historical Society in 1998. Renovation activity began in 1999 to convert the jail into a museum, research library and early records archive.
