John Craig, born in County Antrim, Ireland, ad educated in Edinburgh, Scotland, immigrated to America in 1734. Ordained pastor in 1740 of the two churches known as Augusta Stone and Tinkling Sprint, Craig was Virginia's first settled Presbyterian minister west of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He led the construction of Augusta Stone Church and its defensive reinforcement. Craig, an Old Side minister who resisted the Great Awakening, traveled the backcountry to preach, baptize settlers, and organize congregations. In 1962 architecture student Bill Truex experienced the transformation of Stroget, Copenhagen's main shopping area from traffic-snarled nightmare to successful pedestrian mall. Seven years later, while on the Burlington Planning Commission, Truex enlisted support from Pat Robins of the Street Commission and together they promoted turning Church Street into a pedestrian district. U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy and his chief of staff, Paul Bruhn, secured a federal grant and Burlington voters, with support from Mayor Gordon Paquette, passed a bond for the city's share of construction costs. The Church Street Marketplace, which opened on September 15, 1981, has been described as the gem in the crown of the Queen City of Burlington.

This, the oldest Presbyterian house of worship in Virginia, is an eloquent memorial to the liberty-loving, god-fearing Scotch-Irish folk who first settled this part of the valley.

Through their arduous labors the building was completed in 1747 and dedicated in 1749 under its first pastor, Dr. John Craig, a native of Northern Ireland. It served also as a fort during the Indian raids which followed Braddock's defeat.

The original walls extend from this spot to the wings in the rear, which were added in 1922.

Fire Observation Stations: / Fire Tower is Reborn

New York, Cattaraugus County, Salamanca

[left panel] In the early 20th century, approximately one million acres in the Adirondack and Catskill Forest Preserves were destroyed by fire. In response, New York State passed legislation that created a forest patrol service and funded the construction and staffing of fire observation stations. The first observation station, or fire tower, built in 1909, was made from crude logs and planks. By 1917, steel towers had replaced wooden ones.

Over the next 50 years, fire observers and rangers faithfully scanned the forests for signs of smoke. In the 1970s, many fire towers were decommissioned when the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation began using aerial surveillance flights for fire detection. By 1990, the fire tower era had ended. Within the last few years, citizen awareness in lumbering and farming pracitices, cell phones, global positioning (satellite and radio) technology, together with well-trained and well-equiped volunteer fire companies, have made airplanes unnecessary in forest fire detection.

Fire Towers
The original galvanized steel towers for fire protection purposes - made in various styles to meet every requirement....This picture of an 80-foot tower shows the most popular type. It has regular stairs with frequent landings. Hand rails and guards make these towers safe to climb.

[right panel] In the fall of 1926, the 60-foot Summit Fire Tower on South Mountain was constructed. The following spring, the Summit Fire Tower was first manned. Allegany State Park maintained the strusture until the fall of 1970 when aerial surveillance flights began to replace fire towers fpr fire detection. The tower was abandoned until 1999, when a group of concerned citizens recognized the value of this forgotten resource.
These concerned citizens established the Allegany State Park Fire Tower Restoration Committee to:
★ Restore the Fire Tower to its original, safe, and useful condition.
★ Provide resources to maintain the fire tower and surrounding area.
★ Develop and staff an educational program to explore the history of the fire tower and the surrounding forest.
★ Encourage public support for the Summit Fire Tower.
★ Provide hikers and tourists with dramatic views of the surrounding parkland.

The Henkel house is another historic home. The brick part was built by Dr. Solomon Henkel, physician and druggist, in 1802. The wooden front part and two rooms upstairs were added by his son, Dr. Solon P.C. Henkel in 1855. A metal plate nailed on the right beside the latch covers the holes broken into the panels by the rifle butts and bayonets of irate Yankee soldiers who had been doused with hot water thrown from the upstairs window.

This miner's cabin is one of the oldest buildings left standing in the Kawuneeche Valley. In 1902, Joseph Fleshuts homesteaded 160 acres here with the intent to live on the land for at least five years. Life must have been hard. In 1911 he abruptly he abandoned his cabin—and was not heard from again.

Homesteaders, miners, and trappers were not the first people to inhabit this valley. Ute Indians have hunted game and gathered plants here for more than 6,000 years. The Arapaho came later in the early 1800s. Members of both tribes still return to a place that once was home.

To drive along Old Fall River Road is to travel back in time. The slower pace of driving on a winding dirt road recalls a time when traveling in a national park was both challenging and enchanting.

From 1920 to 1932, Fall River Road was the only motor route across Rocky Mountain National Park. Today, this road is open to uphill traffic only. Steep grades, narrow lanes, and hairpin curves still challenge motorists as they ascend more than 3,000 feet to Fall River Pass (11,796'). The more modern Trail Ridge Road replaced Fall River Road as the main route between Estes Park and Grand Lake in 1932.

The Warner House

New York, Orange County, Constitution Island

Constitution Island was purchased by Henry Whiting Warner, an attorney from New York City, who became interested in the island while visiting his brother, Thomas, who served as the Chaplain at West Point from 1823 until 1838.

A thick stone wall was all that remained of a Revolutionary War-era barracks building that was built in 1775, and Henry built an eight room home using this as a foundation. After his wife’s death in 1829, Warner, his sister Frances, and his daughters Anna and Susan moved from New York City to their new home in 1836. The house is still furnished with original family possessions, such as the Warner sisters cradle and their Henry’s wedding china. Henry Warner died in 1875.

Susan and Anna Warner were both religious writers. Susan Warner began a Bible class for the cadets in 1875, every Sunday afternoon in the Cadet Chapel. The Cadets considered trips to Constitution Island a privilege; they called themselves “Miss Warner’s Boys”. She had workers bring over as many cadets as possible, usually by filing a small sailboat to its carrying capacity. They were known for providing the cadets with a meal during their visits, because the cadets were not otherwise allowed to leave West Point.

Susan Warner wrote one of the most circulated novels of the era, The Wide, Wide World, written in 1850, claimed to be one of the first American bestsellers. Anna Warner wrote well known children’s Christian song, like “Jesus Bids Us Shine” and the famous “Jesus Loves Me, This I Know”.

Susan Warner died in 1885. Anna Warner turned over the property to West Point in 1908, as a gift of faith. She turned down offers that were even higher than the property was worth, just to see that her land would become a part of the West Point Reservation.

My dear Miss Warner:

I have written to Mrs. Sage thanking her, and I write to thank you for the Singular generosity which has prompted you and her to make this gift to the Nation. You have rendered a real and patriotic service, and on behalf of all our people I desire to express our obligation and our appreciation.

With regard, believe me,
Yours sincerely,
Theodore Roosevelt

Anna Warner died in 1915. Susan and Anna Warner are the only two civilians buried in the military cemetery at West Point.

The Constitution Island Association is working hard to maintain the house and gardens so that they remain similar in appearance and description to Anna Warner’s “Gardening by Myself”, another one of her bestsellers.

Snow-Movers

For months on end their food is buried. Herbivores – plant-eaters – face the same relentless winter fate: adapt or starve.

To reach sedges and dry grass, bison swing their huge heads back and forth, clearing away the drifts. Fields become pocked with bowl-shaped “feeding craters.”

Since bison often stand motionless for hours, conserving strength, their foraging techniques are not always evident. Look for the white mask of survival – snow still clinging to a shaggy face.

The Bison’s Hump
Life in deep snow has selectively shaped bison anatomy. Above neck and shoulders, large muscles attached to bony spinal projections give the dark heads tremendous excavating power.
