New York, Montgomery County, Fort Hunter

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site was established in 1966 to honor the great contributions of the Erie Canal to the growth of both New York State and the entire nation. Schoharie Crossing is dedicated to protecting the many remaining structures that represent the Erie Canal's three major eras of operation.

The original Erie Canal. completed in 1825, was 363 miles long. It had 83 locks, with a boat channel 40 feet wide by 4 feet deep. Lock 20 and the East Guard Lock date from the canal's first stage. Beginning in 1835, the erie Canal was widened to 70 feet and deepened to 7 feet, and 72 improved locks were constructed. The Schoharie Aqueduct, Empire lock, and Yankee Hill Lock were part of the second phase of the Erie Canal.

The third major phase of the Erie is the Barge Canal, still operating today. As a section of that canal, the Mohawk River is used to create a boat channel 200 feet wide by 14 feet deep. The "Erie Division" of the Barge Canal, which opened in the early years of the 20th century, is comprised of 35 locks, including Tribes Hill Lock 12.

Wyoming, Park County, Yellowstone National Park

Daisy Geyser is part of an interconnected group of geysers and hot springs. Underground cracks and fissures allow water and heat to circulate between the various features in this group. When the activity of one feature affects the behavior of another, it is called an exchange of function. Daisy Geyser is usually quite predictable, but when nearby Bonita Pool overflows excessively or when Splendid Geyser erupts, Daisy Geyser can become irregular.

Fast Facts:
• Daisy Geyser erupts to heights of 75 feet or more.
• On average, the duration of Daisy Geyser’s eruptions are 3 to 5 minutes.

Grotto is perhaps the most unusual of Yellowstone’s geysers. Geologists believe that hundreds (or thousands) of years ago, Grotto Geyser emerged in a stand of dead or dying trees and, through time, deposited layer upon layer of siliceous sinter (silica) over the stumps and branches.

Fast Facts:
• Grotto’s initial eruption can reach heights of more than 40 feet, but then generally subsides to about 15 feet.
• The duration of Grotto’s eruption can vary from about 50 minutes to more than 24 hours.

The “stones of the little cups” monoliths are part of our ancestral culture. They were found near here in what was the southern edge of the ancient crater lake in 1971. According to archaeologist Tomas Fideas Jimenez, in the Pipil religious tradition, these monoliths represented the myth of the tears that Quetzalcoat shed when he was thrown out by the Aztecs. Similar stones were reported in 1957 in San Diego La Libertad, El Salvador, Guatemala and Chile.

Riverside Geyser

Wyoming, Park County, Yellowstone National Park

Across the Firehole River is Riverside Geyser, one of the most predictable and consistent geysers in Yellowstone. Beginning an hour or two before an eruption, water pours over the cone’s edge, and splashing and bubbling become more visible. Then, water and steam arch over the river to heights of 75 feet. The eruption will last about 22 minutes. As the water diminishes during the eruption, steam continues to billow out, and, when the light is right, rainbows often form in the misty air.

Fast Facts:
• Riverside Geyser is a cone-type geyser.
• Eruptions are very predictable, taking place every 5.5 to 7.5 hours.

Why is Riverside Geyser so Predictable
Unlike many other geysers and hot springs in the Upper Geyser Basin, Riverside may not be connected to nearby features, thus, has a relatively constant source of heat and water. It is uniquely unaffected by other forces such as earthquakes that can shake up underground plumbing systems by closing old vents and creating new ones, and changing previous patterns of water circulation.

This building was the home of the Citizens State Bank from 1893-1943. The assets were purchased and incorporated into the Pleasant Hill Bank. From 1943-58 it was a shoe and dress shop. In 1958 it became a liquor store for several years. Later it was a small convenience store, then an antique shop. The dates on the building 1884-1913 are believed to be the dates of the founding of the bank (which had relocated here.) and the remodeling in 1913.

A Mohawk House Unearthed

New York, Montgomery County, Fort Hunter

Historical documents identify this general area as the location of the Lower Mohawk Castle throughout the 1700s. In 1712 the missionary at Fort hunter described this Mohawk village: "Their chief town or castle as it is called, stands by the fort, consisting of 40 or 50 wigwams or houses, palisaded round."

During the 1991 restoration of the early 1800s house, now called the Enders house, archaeologists expected to find only fragmentary evidence of the earlier Mohawk village. Surprisingly, their excavations revealed that the foundations of an earlier Mohawk house were used and expanded upon in the construction of the 1800s residence.

Through careful excavations and analysis archaeologists determined that the earlier structure measured approximately 16 by 18 feet and was built in the 1760s by the Mohawks. The associated artifacts suggest that while the Mohawks were living in small European-style houses and had incorporated many European objects and customs into their daily lives, they were also actively maintaining their Mohawk culture and identity.

From Longhouse to Cabin:
Traditionally, the Mohawks lived in long bark-covered structures that were shared by numerous families. The arrival of Europeans, their trade goods, and new diseases changed many aspects of Iroquois culture. Throughout the 1700s, European-style, single-family cabins were replacing shared longhouses. The archaeological evidence at the Lower Mohawk Castle indicates that these cabins were wood-framed buildings that had stone foundations, plastered walls, tiled floors, brick chimneys, glass windows, and iron-hinged doors or shutters.

Changing Mohawk Material Culture:
Objects recovered from the Mohawk house site demonstrate that the Mohawks were wealthy enough to purchase modern European and Chinese ceramics and may have also been practicing European customs such as social tea drinking. The Mohawks used European kettles and ceramics for food preparation and consumption, but the animal bones recovered indicate that they consumed more wild game than their European neighbors. Only one triangular arrowhead was recovered, and the 9 gunflints and 18 pieces of lead shot are evidence that firearms were replacing the bow and arrow.

Maintaining Mohawk Identity:
While many aspects of Mohawk culture had changed with the European colonial wars, evidence found in excavations around the house revealed that the Mohawks maintained their own distinct identity, which they communicated to the outside world through their ornamentation. This evidence included 12 catlinite and red slate ornaments, 4 tinkler cones, 2 hawk bells, over 138 glass beads, and 16 shell wampum beads.

On the River

Michigan, Wayne County, Dearborn
Where you are standing now was once an open channel to the Rouge River. The Fords would pilot their boat, the Callie B, out of the boathouse to the river. The Ford grandchildren would harbor small boats here, as well. Conveniently, Mrs. Ford's brother lived just one mile upstream.

In the early 1950's, the channel was filled in because of water pollution from combined storm and sanitary sewers associated with the postwar housing boom upstream. The channel was loaded with slag from the Rouge Steel plant downstream.

Regional and local efforts to clean up the Rouge River are well underway. In the future, visitors to the estate may once again enjoy boat trips along the Rouge River just as the Fords did many years ago.

The design of the boathouse by landscape designer Jens Jensen was intended to appear like a cave opening in the hillside. The adjoining garden at one time had stone walls that paralleled the stone of the boathouse, visually extending the strong horizontal lines of the designed landscape.

Fumaroles

Wyoming, Park County, Yellowstone National Park

The hottest of Yellowstone’s geothermal features are fumaroles (steam vents). Fumaroles in Norris Geyser Basin have measured up to 280°F (138°C). A plentiful water supply would help cool these features; however, steam vents are usually found on hillsides or higher ground, above the basin’s water supply. They rapidly boil away what little water they contain; releasing steam and other gases forcefully from underground.

They counted life a light thing to lay down in the faith they bore. They were terrible in battle. They were generous in victory. East Guard Lock

New York, Montgomery County, Fort Hunter
In front of you are the stone remains of the East Guard Lock, which date to the original Erie Canal. A key element to the canal's operation was controlling the amount of water entering the system. Too much water was more dangerous than too little.

The East Guard Lock was constructed to control flood waters flowing into the canal from the Schoharie Creek. During periods of flooding, two sets of doors in the East Guard Lock could be closed to prevent the swirling waters of the Schoharie from washing away the canal banks. Under normal conditions, the doors would be kept open, leaving a clear channel between the Erie Canal and the creek.

Most of the structures on the original canal were removed when the Erie Canal was enlarged. The East Guard Lock, however, was used throughout the 19th century as part of a feeder canal that channeled water into the Enlarge Erie. The lock was used for flood control into the 20th century. This photograph dates from the "feeder" era. Courtesy of the First Hunter Canal Society.
