Site of Original Boysen Dam

Wyoming, Fremont County, Shoshoni

Mule teams hauled the materials for the original Boysen Dam, built here in the early 1900s by Asmus Boysen to provide power for his gold and copper mining interests in this area. A few years later when the Burlington Railroad built through the Wind River Canyon, rising water behind the dam was declared to be a menace to the operation of the railroad. The railroad sued Boysen, who argued unsuccessfully that the tracks could be raised. He lost the suit and was ordered to remove the superstructure of the dam. Another dam farther upstream replaced the original Boysen Dam, the last of which was torn down in 1948, although the abutments of the old dam may still be seen here. Asmus Boysen was a Danish immigrant who had risen to a position of wealth and political prominence in Iowa. He lost his fortune in this venture. He died in 1938.

DeKalb County

Missouri, DeKalb County, Maysville

[Side A]
DeKalb County, 270,720 acres of rolling prairie land, is one of 19 Missouri counties organized in February, 1845. The name is for German-born Johann Kalb, member of the French army and general in the American Revolution, known as Baron de Kalb. In May, 1845, near the center of the almost square county, Maysville was laid out as the county seat and named for either the month of May or Maysville, Kentucky.

The DeKalb County Courthouse, built in 1939, is the county's fourth. To the west of the courthouse is Maysville's oldest house, built of brick by Dr. John Black in 1854. In one of the few Civil War incidents in the county, Union troops vandalized the house as Black was a Confederate sympathizer.

Missouri's first permanent Chautauqua was founded in Maysville in 1896 by Thomas J. Williamson. Opening lecture was "Last Days of the Confederacy" by Gen. J. B. Gordon.

James T. Blair, Jr., inaugurated Governor of Missouri, 1957, formerly Lt. Gov., 1949-57, was born in Maysville. His father was a Mo. Supreme Court judge, 1915-24.

[Side B]
(Continued from other side)
First white settler in DeKalb County was a Canadian Frenchman, Samuel Vesser, who made a temporary home near Stewartsville in 1824, the year Iowa, Sac, and Fox tribes ceded their claims to the area. Permanent settlers, largely from Ky. and Tenn., came in the late 1820's. Lying in northwest Missouri's Glacial Plains Region, DeKalb is a livestock and grain farming county.

Maysville, the seat of justice, was the only town in the county until Stewartsville was laid out to the south in 1858 on the route chosen by the Hannibal and St. Joseph (now C. B. & Q.). There was Stewartsville Academy, later a college, 1860-85. Osborn was laid out on the same route, 1854, and north on the C. B. & Q., Union Star was founded in 1879. The Chicago, Rock Island, & Pacific reached Maysville, 1886, and on this route Weatherby, Amity, and Clarksdale were founded, 1885.

The old Council Bluffs Trace, a post road opened by the U.S. Army, 1823, from Liberty, Mo., to Fort Atkinson, Nebr., ran through the county. Lost Creek near Maysville got its name when several soldiers, lost in the snow, were rescued near this stream.

Originally located 3 blocks south of here, this monument was moved to this location in 1952. In an effort to rectify inaccurate information presented on the monument, the following corrections are provided.
Oregon TrailThe 1849 date presented on the Oregon Trail portion of the monument seems to imply that date as the beginning of western migration on the Trail. It is now generally accepted that use of the Oregon Trail by organized trains of pioneers heading west began in 1841 and continued until completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869.
Fort CasparIn 1859/60 Louis Guinard built a trading post and toll bridge across the North Platte River at the site known as the upper crossing, later to be called Platte Bridge Station. In addition to Guinard’s trading post and blacksmith shop, the Pony Express and Pacific Telegraph Company used the bridge to cross the river. In 1862 troops of volunteer cavalry from Ohio established a military presence at the site. Renamed Fort Caspar in 1865 (note correct spelling) in honor of Lt. Caspar Collins, the original post and reconstructed fort is actually located 3 miles west of this location.1991

Winter Range on the National Elk Refuge

0

Wyoming, Teton County, Jackson Hole

The Jackson Hole elk herd, numbering about 11,000 animals, is one of the outstanding natural resources of this country. Approximately 7,500 of the elk winter on the 24,300-acre National Elk Refuge, which is administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and is one of over 400 National Wildlife Refuges across the United States.

Managing the Elk
Elk winter at the refuge for about 6 months each year, from November to May. They paw through the snow to feed on natural grasses and standing forage. Supplemental feeding is necessary however, when natural forage is scarce, depleted, or covered by crusted snow and ice. Alfalfa hay pellets are fed each morning during the crucial winter months by refuge employees using special tractors and trailers. The feed maintains the large herd through the worst winter weather. The National Elk Refuge is responsible for feeding the elk and furnishing the equipment. The refuge shares equally in the cost of feed with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.

During the fall, elk are hunted on Federal forest lands as well as on certain areas of the National Elk Refuge and Grand Teton National Park. Hunting is used as a management tool to reduce elk numbers and control herd segments so that the overall population of elk is compatible with limited winter range in the Jackson Valley.

Ned's Point Light

0
0
Massachusetts, Plymouth County, Mattapoisett

1835
Congressman John Quincy Adams, representing the Plymouth County District, recommended to the government that a lighthouse be built in Mattapoisett.

1837
Barnabus Hiller sold four acres at Ned's point to the government for $240, and the United States Lighthouse Service authorized the building of a thirty-five foot tower with a bird-cage shaped lantern. The 32 cantilevered hand-hewn steps were made of granite quarried in Mattapoisett. A keeper's house, barn and oil house were also constructed.

1838
In March, eleven two-tiered lamps, using whale oil, were lit for the first time. The lamps produced a white light.

1857
A Firth Order Fresnel lens, imported from France, was installed in the lantern.

1888
The keeper's dilapidated stone house was replaced with a wood-frame house.

1896
A new octagonal lantern and deck were installed.

1923
The light was automated. With a sextant, mariners can use the altitude of the optic to determine their distance from land.

1952
The town of Mattapoisett obtained title to Ned's Point Lighthouse Reservation for $3,000 and renamed it Veterans of Mattapoisett Memorial Park. The U.S. Coast Guard retains the tower and .17 of an acre as well as a right of way,

1961
The automated light was converted to a 6 second isophase, flashing 3 seconds on and 3 seconds off. The light is visible for 12 nautical miles.

1988
Formal approval was received to list Ned's Point Lighthouse in the National Register of Historic Places.

1993
U.S. Coast Guard Flotilla 67, First District Northern Region, adopted Ned's Point Light, the first flotilla in the country to do so. The Coast Guard's Aids to Navigation Team at Woods Hole is the primary service unit.

Shaping a Canyon

0
0
Wyoming, Big Horn County, Shell

2.5 billion years of geologic history lie exposed in the canyon walls of Shell Creek. Gradual cutting action by Shell Creek eventually exposed the basement granite layer that lies above the earth’s molten core.

However, Shell Canyon itself formed during the past million years and is but a babe by geologic standards. Younger canyons are known by their V-shaped profile and narrow canyon walls.

The canyon first began when a fault split the granite bedrock. Water, following the path of least resistance, created a continuous downward cutting action exposing many distinct rock layers. Hike the trail for a close-up view of Madison Limestone and Bighorn Dolomite. Both formed under warm, shallow seas and are characterized by shell fossils.

Sidebar : >
“Hot in the Basement”

Shell Creek has gradually cut through the mountain to expose the basement granite layer. “Basement” rock, also called bedrock, is a term used to describe the oldest layer lying closest to earth’s molten core.

Forming Waterfalls

0
0
Wyoming, Big Horn County, Shell

If you are a seeker of waterfalls . . .
. . . . mark Shell Falls as unique in terms of waterfall origin. Waterfalls form in three basic ways:

1. Where Hard Meets Soft
Falls commonly form where a hard, resistant streambed meets a softer one. Water erodes soft layers faster, resulting in an abrupt, nearly vertical drop. Victoria and Niagra Falls are famous examples.

2. Hanging Valleys
When a river cuts the main channel at a faster rate than smaller side channels, a ledge forms where they come together. Multnomah Falls in Oregon and Yosemite Falls in California represent “hanging valley” waterfalls.

3. The Earth Moves
Shifts or faults in the earth’s crust can cause steep ledges that form falls when rivers flow over them. Shell Falls is a prime example.

They left their home of the summer’s ease
Beneath the lowland sheltering trees,
To seek by means unknown to all
The promise of the waterfall
