Colonel John Goffe

New Hampshire, Hillsborough County, Bedford

This is considered to be the site of Colonel John Goffe's log dwelling. In 1744 Goffe build a gristmill on Bowman's Brook, later run by his son, Major John Goffe (1727–1813), and his grandson, Theodore Atkinson Goffe (1769–1860). The stream eventually powered several other mills. In 1939, Dr. George Woodbury (1902–1973), a Goffe descendant, built a mill that is now part of the hotel complex across the road, as told in his book, "John Goffe's Mill." Prominent in local history, Colonel Goffe lent his name to neighboring Goffstown and Goffe's Falls. Four generations of Goffes lie nearby in Bedford's Old Burying Ground.

Dance Pavilion

Arizona, Maricopa County, Gilbert
For many years this site was a vacant lot. In the late 1930s Mr. Templeton converted the lot into a dance pavilion. He constructed a wood floor, added lights and surrounded it with a fence. Couples who came to dance on Saturday nights paid ten cents each. Originally, music was provided by local volunteers. Later, town merchants hired musical groups to perform, and dancing was free.

The pavilion, which operated until the early 1940s, also hosted boxing matches on week nights.

This building was constructed in 1958. It was used for many businesses until 1998 when it was purchased by Mary Ellen Fresquez. It was first opened as Ink It! and was the home of Gallery 225.

Arizona, Maricopa County, Gilbert
The Gilbert town hall was built in 1938 to serve the area's 1400 residents. This building consisted of a fire station with a jail behind it. The courthouse and council chambers were also in the building. On January 2, 1938, Congress approved the funds to construct the city hall-fire station for the sum of $12,546. On December 30,1938, a dedication celebration took place at 7:30 p.m. and was attended by a large crowd including Governor R.C. Stanford.

Gilbert's new town hall was constructed of adobe in a Spanish design with concrete floors. The building was 72 feet by 41 feet in size. The central section of the building was used as an assembly hall and for the Justice of the Peace's courtroom. The town clerk's office was located in the right wing of the building. Beneath the main building was a large basement that housed modern heating and air-cooling equipment. The basement also served as Gilbert's first public library which opened on October 3, 1950. The first meeting of the town council in the new facilities took place on May 9, 1939.

The actual cost of the 14-room adobe and stucco structure was $18,000.

Wyoming, Teton County, Jenny Lake

Jenny Lake was the first area developed for recreation in this national park. Enjoy the same splendid scenery and outdoor activities here that first drew visitors to this rugged landscape in the early 20th-century. Since the early 1900s, Jenny Lake has been a popular place for hiking, boating, swimming and photography.

Why Jenny?
1872 Hayden Expedition explorers named this lake to honor their guide Richard “Beaver Dick” Leigh’s wife, a Shoshone Indian named Jenny.

Many of these historic buildings date back to the 1920s and 1930s. Notice how these rustic log structures harmonize with the landscape. In 1990, the National Register of Historic Places designated this area an historic district.

J. Pierce Cunningham settled here in Jackson Hole in the 1880s despite the hardships of winter. He initially opposed the expansion of Grand Teton National Park but later became an advocate. He teamed up with neighbor Josiah “Si” Ferrin to write a petition signed by 97 valley ranchers who agreed to sell their land to form a “national recreation area.” John D. Rockefeller, Jr.’s Snake River Land Company bought Cunningham’s land and other ranches. Rockefeller later donated over 33,000 acres to expand the national park.

The destiny of Jackson’s Hole is as a playground, typical of the West, for the education and enjoyment of the Nation, as a whole.”       J. Pierce Cunningham

Shrinking Teton Glaciers

Wyoming, Teton County, Moose

In the past 40 years the Teton, Teepee, and Middle Teton glaciers on the peaks in front of you have lost 25 percent of their total surface area. Glaciers show us that our climate changes. They serve as icy reservoirs, accumulating snow and ice during the wet, cool years when people need less water and releasing more water into rivers in warm, dry years. Water runoff from the Teton Range provides wildlife habitat, recreational opportunities, and even irrigation for thirsty crops along the Snake River in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

Cattle King of Wyoming

Wyoming, Teton County, Moran

Ranchers cultivated the fields surrounding you for cattle and horse grazing. The Elk Ranch, once located here, was the largest cattle ranch in Jackson Hole.

In 1914 cattle rancher Josiah Davis Ferrin, nicknamed “Uncle Si,” secured a lucrative contract to supply beef to Reclamation Service crews building the Jackson Lake Dam. By 1920, Ferrin had up to 2,000 cattle – an empire earning him the nickname “Cattle King of Wyoming.”

After struggling during an agricultural depression in the 1920s, Ferrin sold his ranch to John D. Rockefeller, Jr.’s Snake River Land Company. The Land Company later donated 35,000 acres of land to expand Grand Teton National Park in 1949.
