Vermont, Caledonia County, Wheelock

When Eleazer Wheelock founded Dartmouth in 1769, he sought land grants to support the new college. In 1785 the Vermont legislature chartered and named a town of 23,000 acres for Wheelock. In the early 1800's substantial support for financially impoverished Dartmouth came from this one grant, a gift of Vermont.

You wouldn't know it from the surface. But this shallow bay (only three to four feet in mose areas) brims with life. What lies beneath? Plankton, algae, grasses, worms, shrimp and minnows, clams and crabs, flounders and eels, stingrays and skates... Few other marine environments nurture so much life.

What's it worth?
This is a place where fresh and salt water mix creating conditions which support a great diversity of plants and animals. A plush carpet of underwater grasses provides vital food, habitat, and refuge for aquatic life.

Most life in the sea depends upon these productive coastal bays and other estuaries like it. In this complex web of connections, there is something for everyone.

Caring for the Bay

Maryland, Worcester County, near Berlin
The marshes in the distance, the waters before you, and the land beneath and behind you form an interwoven whole. What affects one part affects all.

How we use and care for the land impacts it's water quality. The water that drains from the land into this bay affects what lives and grows here. The bay and it's marshes serve as a nursery and nutrient source for the ocean. The health of the ocean is closely linked to the health of these sheltered waters.

(Captions)
Some 175 square miles of land drains into the bays bordering Assateague Island. You drove through this watershed to get here. Along the way, you may have noticed farms, golf courses, homes, and housing developments. All affect bay water quality.

Assateague island is officially protected, but most of the waters around it and the watershed bordering it are not. Stewardship of the land is a shared responsibility. It's up to all of us, wherever we live.

Park staff actively monitor the bay's water quality.

Nebraska Statehood Memorial

Nebraska, Lancaster County, Lincoln
From 1854 to 1867 the seat of territorial and state government was in Omaha. In 1867 the State Legislature appointed a Capital Commission to select a location for the new state capital. Commission members Governor David Butler, Auditor John Gillespie and Secretary of State Thomas P. Kennard on July 29, 1867 selected the present site.

In 1869 John K. Winchell of Chicago designed masonry homes in Lincoln for each of the Commissioners. These showplaces did much to instill confidence in Lincoln's future. Of these three structures, only the Kennard House stands today. It is apparently the oldest house within the original plat of Lincoln and is one of the finest remaining Nebraska examples of Italianate domestic architecture, the leading American style from about 1855 - 1875, Nebraska's pioneer period.

In 1965 the State Legislature designated the structure the "Nebraska Statehood Memorial" and assigned responsibility for the memorial to the Nebraska State Historical Society. Thus the house stands today, a symbol of the confidence early Nebraskans had in their state.

Richmond

California, Lassen County, near Susanville
Due to "Gold Fever" and named for Richmond, Virginia by Orlando Streshly in 1859, the town of Richmond grew rapidly until 1861 - becoming the most important and populous settlement in the county "... overshadowing Susanville." Sporting hotels, a tavern and bowling alley, black smith and wagon shops, a large warehouse and the local masonic lodge, the town celebrated with dances whenever possible. Schools were built, goods and services sold, many "dwelling houses" constructed, and one hotel was "the largest structure in the Honey Lake Valley" as the town thrived. In 1861 the mines gave out. By 1862 commerce ceased, the miners left and Richmond died. All that remain are the remnants of a school and water works. Now Emerson Lake Golf Course stands where "Richmond rose like a rocket and fell like a stick."
