Front Text:
The following notice appeared in the Marysville Tribune newspaper, February 5, 1873: To Arms! To Arms! The Monument Association of Union Township propose holding a Fair and Festival in Milford Centre on Feb 20 and 21...the proceeds to be applied to the fund already raised to erect a Monument in memory of the fallen heroes of Union Tp. Said Monument to be unveiled on the 30th of May, 1873. It is desired that every citizen have an opportunity to contribute something in aid of such a worthy object. It is therefore hoped that every person, male and female, will send in their donations of such articles as they may have to lay upon the alter of our departed Heroes. Bring Wheat, Corn, fancy work, mitts, Hoods, articles for children, anything, to the value of a horse.... “ On May 30, 2003—130 years later—the Monument Association of Union Township rededicated the refurbished monument.

Back text:
According to the June 4, 1873 edition of the Marysville Tribune, 179 men from Union Township enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. The township also provided 38 "Hundred Days Men." Their enlistments were 100 days in duration and they were recruited for what was thought would be the last big push in the summer of 1864 that would topple the Confederacy and end the war. Eleven men from Union Township were "squirrel hunters," members of a statewide civilian militia who rushed to Cincinnati to defend it from threatened invasion by Confederate General Henry Heth in September 1862. A total of 37 men from Union Township gave their lives for their country during the Civil War. Seventeen men died in combat, 5 men died from their wounds, and 15 died of disease. The granite tablets that flank the monument list the names of Civil War veterans buried in Union Township.

Poplar Tunes

Calling itself "Memphis' Original Record Shop," Poplar Tunes lived up to its billing. Founders Joe Coughi and John Novarese opened the store in 1946, selling records for the retail, wholesale and jukebox trade. Demo records lined the shelves with turntables at the end of each row, allowing customers to hear records before deciding to buy. A young Elvis Presley, who lived nearby, bought his first record here. As his career began to take off, Elvis frequented the shop, hiding in a corner to hear how customers were reacting to his latest release. Another drop-in was Sam Phillips of Sun Records, often introducing Coughi to new talent, such as Jerry Lee Lewis. The store's success led to the founding of Hi Records, headquartered next door. Hi's most famous artists were the Bill Black Combo, Willie Mitchell and Al Green.

One-Stop Shop
Before the days of "Top 40" charts, Poplar Tunes, circulating its own chart, became a barometer and major influence of popular music tastes. Boosting the store's reputation was disc jockey Dewey Phillips. With his free-wheeling, rapid-fire banter, "Daddy-O-Dewey" urged his listeners to: " Get yourself a load of goober dust, take it to Joe Guoghi at Poplar Tunes and tell him Phillips sent you." During off hours Phillips and local artists would visit the shop, spin new releases and rate them. He compared his picks and exchanged industry gossip with Cuoghi, who was regarded as the city's foremost music insider and often a make-or-break critic of new releases. Young artists felt they had arrived if Cuoghi invited them to hold autograph signings at Poplar Tunes. Phillips died at age 46 in 1968. Cuoghi died two years later, at age 48, leaving Novarese to run the shop. It closed in 2009.

August Erath, born in Morat, Switzerland, in 1843 came to Louisiana in 1866 married Catherine Becht, and moved to New Iberia in 1876. Erath was a brewer by trade and practiced his art here for a few years. In 1884, he commissioned the construction of this building as a residence and place of business. The Architecture is unusual in that the several gables were designed to mask six chimneys. As the building neared completion, Mr. Erath had his initials cast in iron and affixed to the west wall. He was a civic leader and served as Mayor from 1887 to 1889. August Erath died in 1900.

About 6:00 PM, October 10, 1899, fire started in a warehouse just east of here. Within minutes, the surrounding buildings were ablaze. The entire square, from Julia to Iberia Streets and from Main to St. Peter Streets burned before midnight. Only the heroic efforts of the fire companies of New Iberia, Jeanerette and St. Martinville saved the remainder of the business district. Nevertheless, over fifty percent of New Iberia's enterprises were destroyed by the fire. Most of the buildings now standing on this block arose from the ashes of that disaster.

A prominent Canadian politician, Morris was born in Paisley, Scotland. His family immigrated to Canada in 1801 and later settled in Elizabethtown (Brockville). He joined his brothers, Alexander and William, in business there about 1820 and by 1836 had gained prominence in commercial and banking circles. Morris represented Leeds in the provincial legislature from 1837 until his appointment to the Legislative Council in 1844. Named first Canadian postmaster-general in 1851, when responsibility for that service passed from the British government, he introduced Canada's first stamps, and significantly standardized and reduced rates. Morris subsequently served as speaker of the Legislative Council (1853–54, 1858) and concluded his public career as receiver-general (1862–63) in the Reform ministry of J.S. Macdonald and L.-V. Sicotte.

Former Brockville Post Office

Completed in 1886 this structure was designed under the direction of Thomas Fuller, Chief Architect of the Department of Public Works from 1881 to 1896. The Brockville Post Office shows the sensitivity often displayed by Fuller and his staff. The basic design with the double entrance and steep roof was adapted to many small post offices across Canada, but varied here by the presence of superb stonework and a central pedimented gable with flanking gables. Each post office was unique but collectively they shared a resemblance that came to symbolize the federal presence throughout Canada.

On this island, formerly known as Hospital Island, stood the sheds erected to house emigrants who were victims of cholera in the great epidemic of 1832. Many persons died here, including Doctor Robert Gilmour, a native of Scotland and president of the first Board of Health in Upper Canada, who was stricken while attending the sick. During the Rebellion of 1837–38, a Blockhouse was erected here for the defense of Brockville. It was destroyed by fire in 1860.

Montsec American Monument

(Main Panel:)
This Monument has been erected by the United States of America to commemorate the capture of the St. Mihiel Salient by the troops of her First Army and to record the services of the American Expeditionary Forces on the battle front in this region and elsewhere in Lorraine and in Alsace. It stands as a lasting symbol of the friendship and cooperation between the French and American Armies

(Side Panel #1:)
This is one of eleven monuments erected in Europe by the United States of America to commemorate the services of the American armed forces in World War I. It recalls the achievements of of the more than 550,000 American troops whe were involved in the Saint Mihiel offensive from September 12-16, 1918. The Saint Mihiel offensive was the first operation in World War I carried out by a complete American Army under the independent control of the American Commander-in-Chief.

This hill of Montsec dominates the surrounding territory, which was known during the war as the Saint Mihiel salient. Occupied by the Germans for over four years, the salient was heavily defended, provided excellent observation behind Allied lines, and was strategically crucial to the entire area. The French had made a number of unsuccessful attacks against this veritable fortress in the preceding years.

The successful attack on this site was carried out by over 550,000 American and 110,000 French soldiers. The air force concentrated for the battle, 1,481 airplanes, was the largest ever brought together at that time and consisted mainly of British and French planes. The Army had about 400 French tanks (144 were manned by Americans), 3,000 pieces of artillery, and over 3,300,000 rounds of ammunition. The opposing force was composed of eight divisions and two brigades in line and five divisions in reserve.

The overpowering bombardment of hostile positions began at 1 a.m. on September 12. At 5 a.m., the main Infantry attack jumped off in front of here, hidden by a smoke screen placed around this hill. The bombardment on the west face of the salient continued until 8 a.m., when the Infantry attack there commenced. Just after 2 a.m. on September 13, patrols from the two axis of advance met just northeast of Vigneulles. More than 15,000 prisoners and 450 cannons were captured as the salient was finally closed.

The site is maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission, an agency of the United States Government. Further information may be obtaned from the superintendent of the Saint Mihiel American Cemetery, locaed near Thiaucourt, where more than 4,000 American World War I dead are buried; including many who perished in this battle.
