France, Champagne-Ardenne, Marne, Reims

On the day after their coronation, the kings of France, who were the "armed hand of the Church," went from the cathedral to Saint-Remi in a lavish military procession on rue Saint-Denis and rue Neuve (today rues Chanzy and Gambetta) called the "cavalcade of Saint-Remi".

English translation:
The day after their coronation the kings of France, "the armed branch of the Church," traditionally, rode in a brilliant military procession from the Cathedral Saint-Remi via the Rue Saint Denis and the Rue Neuve (now Chanzy and Gambett streets); this parade was called "cavalcade of Saint-Remi." The sovereign was surrounded by his Guards in full uniform and delegations from numerous cavalry and infantry regiments, marched between two lines of troops placed throughout the route. On arrival, the King prayed before the tomb of Saint Remi and was then received at the abbey. The last of these rides was for the coronation of Charles X, on 31 May 1825.

Louisiana, Saint Martin Parish, Breaux Bridge
Scholastique Picou Breaux founded our wonderful city when she was just 33 years old. A determined Acadian woman, she drew up Plan de la Ville du Pont Breaux, the plan for the Village of Breaux Bridge. Her plan included land for a school, a church, a diagram of streets, and a detailed map of the area that included her late husband's bridge. She then proceeded to sell lots and established Breaux Bridge's founding date of August 5, 1829.

Scholastique was born Scholastique Melanie Picou on July 25, 1796. She married young, had five children and was widowed at the age of 32. Her financial troubles motivated her to begin developing a plan for the Village of Breaux Bridge. Later she remarried and bore two more children.

The story of Scholastique Breaux speaks of the unflagging determination and indomitable courage of the Acadian women. She symbolizes the Acadians of Louisiana.

Breaux du Monde

In August 1999 a reunion of over 500 Breaux descendents was held in Breaux Bridge in conjunction with Congres Mondial. Breaux du Monde made a significant contribution to the statue erected to Scholastique Picou Breaux.

On the morning of May 28th, 1918, the 28th Infantry Regiment, U.S. First Division, American Expeditionary Force, commanded by Colonel Hanson E. Ely, conducted the first major American offensive of World War I here at Cantigny. The rest of the First Division, French aircraft, artillery, tanks and flamethrowers, supported the attack. The seizure and defense of Cantigny against determined German opposition proved the worth of the American soldier and bolstered Allied morale at a critical time. Almost 900 members of the regiment were killed or wounded during the four-day battle. The regiment earned the French Croix de Guerre with palm and designation of "The Lions of Cantigny." The regiment's crest bears a lion derived from the coat of arms of Picardy.

In the early dawn of Tuesday 28 May 1918, French and American artillery began to shell German positions north of Cantigny in preparation for an attack on the village by the U.S. First Division. The 1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment, commanded by Major Robert R. McCormick, concentrated the fire of its eight 155-mm Schneider howitzers from positions in the west near Rocquencourt in support of the successful attack. In 1937, McCormick, then publisher of the Chicago Tribune newspaper, participated in the dedication of the Federal Monument nearby.

Fort Wool

Virginia, Norfolk
In the summer of 1834, having supervised Fort Monroe's completion, engineer Robert E. Lee took up residence in Fort Calhoun's officer's quarters. Three years earlier, ominous fissures had materialized in the citadel's stone piers and arches. Unexpectedly, the weight added by the fort's walls was causing a renewed settling of the Rip Raps, and all construction was halted until the settling subsided. Lee was assigned responsibility for the placement of load stone and sand on the fort's exterior and interior to hasten the island's settling process. Lee began to sense that to finish the fort might be "too great a labor even for a Hercules."

President Andrew Jackson contemplated fundamental changes to the bastion and apparently ordered alterations in its design. A frustrated Lee complained that "the President has played the devil with the plan for Fort Calhoun."

Lee's other duties were light and routine. He dealt with captains of vessels carrying stone to the island, which required examining the material for quality, size, and weight, followed by the filing of repetitious reports. He was also subjected to a bevy of bothersome inspections. During sweltering July temperatures, the Inspector General of the Army, Col. John E. Wool, arrived for yet another visit. Nettled by this redundancy, Lee hoped that Wool would enjoy his "dose of heated granite."

After two months at Fort Calhoun, and because of his good work, Lee was reassigned to Washington, where he was promoted to be assistant to the U.S. Army's Chief of Engineers.

♦ Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes, containing 128 trillion galons of water, and measuring 241 miles long and 57 miles wide.
♦ Eighty percent of Lake Erie's water flows in via the Detroit River, carrying water from Lakes Superior, Huron, and Michigan.
♦ The lake provides drinking water for approximately 11 million people.
♦ The lake's microclimates and formerly more extensive lakebed create a favorable environment for agriculture. The north shore is one of the richest areas of Canada's fruit and vegetable production. The southeastern shore is an important grape growing region, and apple orchards are abundant along the lake from Ohio to New York.
