Odessa

Texas, Ector County, Odessa
After the Texas and Pacific Railway extended its line to the South Plains of Texas in 1881, the Odessa Land and Townsite Company of Zanesville, Ohio, began promotional efforts to attract settlers to its property along the rail line. Regular excursion trains brought many settlers to the area, including Charles and Lucy White, who came with their family from Indiana and helped transform this area from prairie to city. Their 1887 home serves as a museum today, a reminder of Odessa's early development.

Odessa's first post office opened in 1885. The town was platted the following year and became county seat when Ector County was formally organized in 1891. The first elected county commissioners were M.G. Buchanan, J.W. Driven, James Bolton and J.L. Gray.

Located in the Permian Basin, in the midst of great oil and natural gas reserves, Odessa was a small farming and ranching town until oil was discovered on the W.E. Connell Ranch (16 mi. SW) in 1926. Growth was rapid, and the city was incorporated the following year, with S.R. McKinney as first mayor. By 1930, Odessa was an established oil center and after World War II, it became a major distribution and processing point in the petrochemical industry.

The city of Odessa serves as a vital trading center for this part of Texas and boasts civic, cultural and educational opportunities for citizens and visitors alike. With its roots in cattle and oil, the community is an important reflection of Texas history and heritage.

Chevet de la Cathédral Notre-Dame

France, Champagne-Ardenne, Marne, Reims

Built at the beginning of the 13th century, the chevet of the cathedral is a testimony of the builder's artistic and scientific skills.

English translation of first paragraph:
Postwar urban planning preserved the cathedral, the archbishop's palace (1690) and the Gothic palace chapel, the prelate oratory and his curia. Built in the first third of the thirteenth century, demonstrates how the masterly crafted chevet, with its double flights of flying buttresses, balances with the choir, vaulted to 38 meters and pierced with high windows. The statues of angels abound and spread their wings to the top of the bell tower (82.5 meters); reflecting the builders image of the heavenly city. The building is an illustration of the gate of heaven, with ascending lines to draw your attention upwards.

Zion Church

Michigan, Macomb County, Mount Clemens
Side 1
Organized on July 3, 1854, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church was the first German Protestant congregation in Mount Clemens. Its founding trustees were John Rossow and Abraham Devantier from Prussia, John William Miller and Carsten Roecker from Hanover, and John Charles Reimold and John George Murthum from Wuerttemberg. Zion Church operated as a free congregation, welcoming all Christians. It served primarily German-speaking Catholic and Protestant immigrants, including Lutherans, Calvinists and Huguenots. Worshipping at first in the Macomb County Courthouse, the congregation purchased this site, the former Methodist Academy, in 1862. The nave of the present brick sanctuary was built by Minard Barr in 1880. The tower and transepts were added in 1895.

Side 2
The itinerant ministers who served Zion Church in its formative years were Methodist, Lutheran and Evangelical. The first resident pastor was the Reverend William Kies (1862-1864). He was followed by the Reverend Hermann Gundert (1864-1903), who contributed $4,000 of his own money to help fund the tower and transepts of the present church building. It was not until the 1920s, during the pastorate of the Reverend F.A. Roese (1903-26), that English became the language of the worship service and of church records. In the early twentieth century, the congregation turned to humanitarian work. Lead by the Reverend Jacob Wulfmann (1927-49), the congregation helped support the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital and the Evangelical Home for Children and Aged in Detroit. In 1961 the church received its present name, Zion United Church of Christ.

The St. Joseph Cemetery Calvary-Grotto Shrine

Louisiana, Lafourche Parish, Thibodaux
Dating back to 1883, the Calvary-Grotto Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes is one of the Historic Places in Thibodaux that remain in constant use to this day.

In 1865, with the Grotto in mind, Rev. Charles Menard, Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, planted two rows of Oak Trees behind the old church to form an alley to where the grotto was to be built. Early records show that 2,400 cart-loads of dirt were required to form a hillock seventeen feet high. The grotto was built of bricks. On December 16, 1883, a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes was placed in the grotto.

The addition of the Calvary group of cast iron statues purchased from the House of Verrbout in Paris, France. In his description of the statues Rev. Menard stated "The Execution of the anatomy of the Christ is remarkable. The Blessed Virgin is striking in her expression of extreme sorrow...filled with superhuman resignation...St. John is full of faith and love, and St. Mary Magdalene is remarkable in her attitude of meditation and repentence...This group is a real masterpiece."

On October 8, 1884, Archbishop Francis Leray of New Orleans Blessed the statues and gave the Pontifical blessing to the crowd of about 2000 persons in attendance at the solemn and impressive ceremony. "Everyone returned home with the piety which the ceremony inspired", recorded Rev. Menard.

In later years, the statues of St. Joseph, St. Anne, St. Jude and St. Theresa of the child Jesus were added in niches of the grotto.

The Shrine-Grotto continues to be a place of meditation and prayer, as no doubt, the Rev. Menard anticipated over a century ago.

Larose, located at the crossroads of Bayou Lafourche and the Intercoastal Canal, called Canal Harang until the first Post Office was opened around 1890. Was named for Joseph Felicien Larose, a pharmacist who acted as an unofficial Postmaster. A canal dug to give access to New Orleans markets for local settlers who produced oranges, rice and potatoes, gave the area the incentive to grow. In 1943 the present Intercoastal Canal was constructed, but instead of farm produce plying the waterway, today it is mostly oil, sulphur, shells and equipment which are frequently carried on the waterway.
