Glauke Fountain

$

Greece, Peloponnese Region, Corinthia Regional Unit, Archea Korinthos (Old Corinth)
The fountain of Glauke, a large cubic mass of limestone, was formed when the surrounding bedrock was quarried away. Originally, the fountain was contained within a long limestone ridge running west from Temple Hill. Pausanias, who described his visit to Corinth ca. A.D. 150, reports that the fountain received its name from Glauke, daughter of Creon the King of Corinth and the second wife of the hero Jason. Medea, Jason's first wife, in a fit of jealousy presented Glauke with a cloak infused with poison. After putting on the cloak, Glauke threw herself into the fountain in an unsuccessful attempt to stop the poison from burning her.

Similar to the Fountain of Peirene, Glauke consists of four large reservoirs fronted by three draw basins and an architectural facade. Although this facade is now largely gone, still visible are the cuttings into which was inserted the parapet which formed the front of the draw basins. The deep cut through the center of the steps provided a means of removing the stone from digging the reservoirs and would have been filled in when the fountain became operational. Directly to the north of Glauke at the foot of the steps was a small courtyard paved with tiles in the Roman period.

Unlike all other fountains in Corinth, Glauke does not exploit a natural spring but instead is fed by water piped in from a source somewhere to the south. This fact, along with several other considerations, suggests that the fountain may not date to the Archaic period as was originally thought but perhaps belongs to the Hellenistic period.

Temple of Apollo

Greece, Peloponnese Region, Corinthia Regional Unit, Archea Korinthos (Old Corinth)
English Text:

The seven standing columns of the Archaic temple are one of the most prominent landmarks of Corinth. Contrary to one's first impression, however, the view from this point is back of the building. The dedication of the temple to Apollo is deduced from Pausanias' description of Corinth combined with a small plaque which was dedicated to Apollo and fount in the area. Built in the middle of the 6th century B.C. to replace a destroyed 7th century predecessor, the temple is in Doric order and originally had six columns at each end and fifteen along each side. Notable characteristics of its archaic date include the great length of the temple relative to its width, the large monolithic columns, and the squat, widely flaring capitals.

Although most of this mid-6th century B.C. building has been destroyed, the bedrock preserves cuttings made to receive the foundation blocks and thus allows a reconstruction of the temple's plan. The interior of the temple consists of a porch at either end and a long central part (the cella) divided into two rooms by a cross wall. The traditional reconstruction of the plan makes this cross wall a solid wall and provides access to the western room of the cella through the western door. Alternatively, the cross wall may have been pierced by a doorway, in which case the western room could have served as an inner shrine (an adyton). In any case, two rows of columns ran the length of the building within the interior.

From the Archaic period, access to the hilltop was up a monumental staircase at the southeast corner of the hill. The Roman period, however, introduced many changes to the area. Access to the temple was now from the west. This change resulted from building activity on the other three sides of the hill which blocked off the earlier staircase and quarried into the sides of the hill. The Romans also carried out a radical renovation of the temple itself. The interior columns were removed and some of them were set up in a row near the west end of the South Stoa where they are still standing.

English:
This building that was one of the great and gorgeous buildings of Ottoman bathhouses in Istanbul, was constructed by Hurrem Sultan in 1556-57. The architect of the building, that was called "Hagias Sophia Bathouse", was Architect Sinan.

The building that lost its genuine use in the beginning of Republican era was used as gas tank of the municipality, and was warehouse of State Printing Office for a while. It was ruined due to negligence; also a door was opened in-between temperature parts of women and men.

In the bathhouse that was firstly restored in I957-1958, several international contemporary arts exhibitions were performed at the end of l980s.

The building that was designed as double-bathouse lies in north-south direction. On the walls of the building, rubble stone-fence on which hackings were used in patches, but at the entrance facade (northern) of men's part that was decorated by a portico, sequential wall by two lines of brick and a line of face limestone were preferred. The elegant portico on the northern facade of men's par that was rarely seen in other bathhouses and giving mosque view has five units. The unit in the middle with square plan has pendentive dome, other units with rectangular plan are covered by cavetto vaults. The lancet arches with sequential walls of the portico are settled on columns decorated by checkered headings. Above the entrance with drop arch, under a basmala, a tablet with the date of 1556-57 that was written by a poet with a nickname of "Hudai" is available. Dressing rooms with square plan, that were made dominant over the outer facade of the building by holding it higher than the other parts of the bathhouse were crowned by domes embedded on the squinches. In the addorsed heating parts of men and women, it could be seen that traditional scheme of Turkish bathhouse architecture with a central sofa and four iwans and star with eight-strand that was characteristic for Roman architecture were applied in a synthesis.

The route of the ancient traveler Pausanias through the Corinthian Forum at the 2nd century A.D., together with the results of the excavations conducted on the site by the American Archaeological School of Athens, give the modern visitor an idea about the main roadways of the ancient city from the classical to the roman period. At the same time, the modern visitor has the opportunity to see the remains of two main roads of the Roman city, the Lechaion and the Kenchraie road.

The characteristic of the roman urban planning are the large roads (avenues). They cross the city, intersect in its center and end in the gates: the so called "cardo", from north to south and the "decumanus", from east to west. At the intersection of the main roads was situated the Agora, "forum", i.e. the main social and religious center, an open space, bordered by colonnades and monumental buildings.

The Grand Canal

New York, Erie County, Buffalo

Skeptics dubbed the project "Clinton's Folly" and "Clinton's Ditch" when construction of the Erie Canal began near Rome on July 4, 1817, deriding both the project and its principal promoter. Things were very different by October 24, 1825 when Governor DeWitt Clinton declared the Erie Canal complete and began a grand waterborne procession from Buffalo to New York City.

The Erie Canal prompted settlement, commercial agriculture, and manufacturing across upstate New Yok and also opened vast areas in the middle of the American continent to similar developments. As the principal channel for the products of New York and Midwestern farms, forests, and mines, the canal confirmed New York City's place as America's foremost seaport and commercial center and made New York the Empire State.

The Erie Canal provided the first all-water link between Atlantic Seaboard and the upper Great Lakes - 363 miles long. It climbed 570 feet between the tidal Hudson River at Albany on its way to Lake Erie in Buffalo. It passed through a series of 83 locks as shown on this 1825 map.

The Erie and connecting canals were so successful that they were enlarged to accommodtae bigger boats in ever increasing numbers. The New York State Barge Canal system, constructed between 1905 and 1918, represents the last major enlargement and remains in service today.
