Bigelow House

[photo] Bigelow House on its original site.

The saltbox style of the Bigelow House originated in New England and was not commonly found in this area. Originally located near New and Smith Roads in East Amherst, this house was built by Henry Bigelow, one of Amherst's more prosperous early residents, who was originally from Vermont.

It is likely that the left side of the house was built in the 1840s, while the right side dates to the 1850s. The two parts are clearly visible when viewing the front of the house. There are interior details that also indicate construction from two time periods.

By the 1860s, Biglow's Ransom Creek farm and this house had been inherited by a son, Harry Foster Bigelow, a noted horticulturalist who lived in Williamsville. We do not believe that anyone from the Bigelow family ever lived in this house. Most likely, it was occupied by the farm manager or tenants.

The interior has been furnished to reflect the possible occupation of the house by Harry Bigelow's farm manager and his family during the 1860s. The house and furnishings reflect the changes in technology and availability of goods that a middle-class rural family would have had at that time.

Although we do not know how all the rooms in this house were originally utilized, the arrangement chosen by the Museum is based on research and common mid-19th-century floor plans. The room on the left depicts a bedroom used by the parents, possibly shared with an infant or very young child. The parlor would have served as the gathering place or the family during evenings when chores were done. In the rear of the house is the kitchen, a sub-kitchen or workroom, and a storage area. Two stairways lead to separate second floor areas. It is probable that the older children slept in the portion that is over the parlor, while the section over the kitchen may have housed farm laborers or been used for storage.

This house was moved to the Amherst Museum in 1975 when the original site was acquired for the Ransom Oaks development.

The Iola State Bank building was very modern for its time. In the "Depression" of the 1930s the Iola State Bank had a buzzer system connected to Stanley Toland's law office located in the upstairs of the adjoining building to the south. Mr. Toland, who grew up on a farm, was handy with a rifle, and if the buzzer rang, he was to lean out of his office window and shoot any fleeing robbers! Fortunately, he never had to.

This gated cemetery, where generations of Ridgleys are buried, is still in use by the family. Feel free to enter and walk among the tombstones and monuments, but show proper respect. Notice the family vault at center, the names and inscriptions on the graves, and the various sculptures that mark them. One grave has a little stone lamb, the resting place of a young son of Charles Ridgely , fourth master of Hampton. Large families and limited medical knowledge meant early death was a sad aspect of everyday life, one the Ridgelys shared with their slaves and servants. To your left, in the oval stand of trees, is the pet cemetery, where several of the Ridgelys' treasured Chesapeake Bay retrievers and other animals rest. A slave cemetery is believed to have been in the general area, location uncertain.

A vulnerable point on the vital line of supply from Lower Canada in the War of 1812-14. Raided on the 21st September, 1812, when the bridge was broken up. Fortified by the Leeds Militia and garrisoned in turn by the 104th, 41st, 89th, Canadian Voltigeurs, Royal Newfoundland, 57th and 70th Regiments, with Royal Artillery, it became the base for a division of gunboats cruising among the Thousand Islands for the protection of transport.

Gen. Sir Isaac Brock. K.C.B.

Ontario, Leeds and Grenville Counties, Brockville
Brockville was named after the Provisional Civi Administrator of Upper Canada and the Commanding Officier of the British forces in Upper Canada during the War of 1812-1814.

The government of Upper Canada first named this community “Elizabethtown” after moving the site of district administration here in 1809. The building of the first Court House and Gaol in the village was completed in 1810. The surrounding township was also named Elizbethtown, so the local citizens were searching for a different and generally acceptable name to apply to their new hamlet.

Following a period when major landowners and citizens failed to agree on a suitable local name, the name “Brockville” was suggested in 1812.

Major-General Isaac Brock had perviously led his troops and succeeded in winning the Battle of Detroit on August 16, 1812 by forcing the surrender of U.S. General, William Hull, and his garrison there. As a result of this action, General Brock was at the height of his popularity. The used of his name would, therefore, have been considered quite a coup for this young and growing village.

It was a terrible tragedy later when General Brock was shot and killed while leading a charge up the heights, west of the village of Queenston, Upper Canada, on October 13, 1812. He had been targeted by an American sharpshooter waiting amongst the enemy force holding the top of the hill.

The “Saviour of Canada” was cut down defending the Niagara area from American invaders and his loss was a terrible shock to his troops and to most Canadians. A week later, official notice arrived by post that Isaac Brock had been selected to receive a knighthood from the King. After Brock’s death, the King conferred on him the title, Knight Commander of the Bath.

The name Brockville began to be used immediately, gaining the support of local political figures such as Charles Jones, William Buell, and other citizens. The name was approved by the Crown on June 3, 1813.

The bronze bust and stone monument nearby was proposed by te members of the General Brock Chapter of the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.). After eight years effort, the IODE, raised the funds for its creation and erection. The bust of General Sir Isaac Brock was created by Hamilton McCarthy of Ottawa, on of the leading sculptors of his day.

The monument to General Brock was unveiled during a ceremony here on August 19, 1912 in the centenary year of his death.

Ontario, Leeds and Grenville Counties, Gananoque
Built about 1831-32, and designed in the late phase of the Neo-Classic style, this structure is among the best of its type remaining in Ontario. Constructed as a dwelling for John McDonald, a local landowner, merchant, postmaster and later a member of the Legislative Council of Canada, it remained in the family until 1911. The earliest settlement at the site of Gananoque took place in the late 1790's, and the first major survey of a village site was carried out in 1842. First incorporated in 1862, Gananoque became a town on January 1, 1890. The town hall was deeded to the corporation by the McDonald heirs in October, 1911, and accepted in December of that year.

Raid on Gananoque

Ontario, Leeds and Grenville Counties, Gananoque
On September 21, 1812, a United States force of some 200 regulars and militia under Capt. Benjamin Forsyth attacked Gananoque. The village was an important forwarding point for supplies moving up the St. Lawrence from Montreal to Kingston and was garrisoned by a detachment of the 2nd Leeds Militia under Col. Joel Stone. After a spirited resistance, Stone withdrew his force comprising two subalterns and about forty soldiers, and the Americans seized the stores and burned the government depot. As a result of this raid, a blockhouse was begun in Gananoque the following month and completed in 1813.
